Claims
- 1. In an inner pipe member for use with an outer pipe member to form a closing and/or regulating apparatus for tapping molten metal from the interior of a metallurgical vessel, said inner pipe member having extending through a wall thereof at least one opening, an outer surface of said inner pipe member having a sealing surface adapted to mate with an inner sealing surface of the outer pipe member to be fitted over said inner pipe member, said inner pipe member adapted to be fixedly mounted with respect to a metallurgical vessel or to be mounted movably relative to the outer pipe member to thereby selectively bring said opening of said inner pipe member relatively into and out of alignment with an opening through the outer pipe member, the improvement comprising:
- said inner pipe member having adjacent an inner end thereof at a position inwardly of said opening therein a gas permeable closure closing the interior of said inner pipe member; and
- said inner pipe member having therethrough at least one gas channel opening into said opening.
- 2. The improvement claimed in claim 1, wherein said at least one gas channel extends through said inner pipe member from said inner end thereof to said opening.
- 3. The improvement claimed in claim 1, wherein said at least one gas channel extends through said inner pipe member from an outer end thereof to said opening.
- 4. In an outer pipe member for use with an inner pipe member to form a closing and/or regulating apparatus for tapping molten metal from the interior of a metallurgical vessel, said outer pipe member having extending through a wall thereof at least one opening, an inner surface of said outer pipe member having a sealing surface adapted to mate with an outer surface of the inner piper member to be fitted within said outer pipe member, said outer pipe member adapted to be fixedly mounted with respect to a metallurgical vessel or to be mounted movably relative to the inner pipe member to thereby bring said opening of said outer pipe member relatively into and out of alignment with an opening through the inner pipe member, the improvement comprising:
- said outer pipe member have an open outer end through which is to extend the inner pipe member;
- said outer pipe member having a closed inner end defining therein a space forming a gas distribution chamber at a location to confront a closed inner end of the inner pipe member; and
- means for introducing gas into said gas distribution chamber such that said gas passes therefrom along said sealing surface into said opening, said gas introducing means comprising means extending through said closed inner end of said outer pipe member from a position to be located in the interior of the metallurgical vessel to said space.
- 5. The improvement claimed in claim 4, wherein said gas introducing means comprises a gas channel extending through said outer pipe member.
- 6. The improvement claimed in claim 4, further comprising at least one gas channel extending through said outer pipe member from said gas distribution chamber to said opening through said outer pipe member.
