- 4. The article of claim 1 wherein the organic polymer comprises polyester and the cured, heat resistant polymer comprises silicone rubber.
- 5. The article of claim 1 wherein the fabric is selected from the group consisting of knitted fabrics, woven fabrics and nonwoven fabrics, and the composite structure has an open work structure defining at least about 25% void space.
- 6. The article of claim 5 wherein the open structure defines at least about 50% void space.
- 7. The article of claim 6 wherein the open structure defines at least about 75% void space.
- 8. The article of claim 5 wherein the fabric is a knitted fabric.
- 9. The article of claim 1 wherein the thermoplastic organic polymer comprises polyester, the fabric is a knitted fabric, and the heat resistant polymer comprises silicone rubber.
- 10. The article of claim 1 wherein the composite structure defines a substantially flat tray comprising at least one depression defining a compartment operative to retain and form a piece of dough during a dough baking process.
- 11. The article of claim 10 wherein the flat tray is free of deformations other than the depressions.
- 12. The article of claim 10 wherein the flat tray defines a flat perimeter area around the depressions and which comprises adjacent to the perimeter an amount of heat resistant polymer effective to render the article sufficiently self supporting to retain and form the dough during a dough baking process free of any supportive devices extrinsic to the flat tray other than a base surface on which the article is positioned during the dough baking process.
- 13. The article of claim 10 further comprising adjacent to the flat perimeter extruded high flexural modulus polymer film from about 1 to about 10 mils thick to reinforce the flat perimeter area.
- 14. The article of claim 13 wherein the polymer film is selected from the group consisting of polyamide film, polyimide film and polyester film.
- 15. The article of claim 13 wherein the polymer film is about 5 mils thick.
- 16. The article of claim 1 wherein the fabric comprises a nonwoven web.
- 17. The article of claim 1 wherein the composite structure is selected from the group consisting of soap dishes, colanders, splatter shields adapted for use in a microwave oven and filters.
- 18. A process for fermenting and baking dough comprising placing a lump of dough in a depression of the article of claim 10, allowing the dough to ferment, and then heating the fermented dough contained within the article to a temperature effective to bake it.
- 19. A process for making a composite article with a predetermined shape comprising the steps of:
a) providing a flat sheet of a fabric comprising a thermoplastic organic polymer; b) impregnating the fabric with a liquid precursor to a heat resistant polymer; c) inserting the flat sheet into a heated mold to form the sheet into the predetermined shape; d) heat curing the liquid precursor to form cured, heat resistant polymer, thereby fixing the composite article in the predetermined shape; and e) removing the shaped composite article from the mold.
- 20. The process of claim 19 wherein the curing step comprises heating the fabric impregnated with liquid precursor to a curing temperature that is from about 120° C. to about the softening point of the thermoplastic organic polymer.
- 21. The process of claim 19 wherein the curing step comprises heating the fabric impregnated with liquid precursor to a curing temperature that is at or above the softening point of the thermoplastic polymer.
- 22. The process of claim 19 wherein the thermoplastic organic polymer comprises polyester and the liquid precursor comprises curable liquid silicone rubber.
- 23. The process of claim 22 wherein the curing temperature is from about 225° C. to about 235° C.
- 24. The process of claim 19 wherein the composite article has an open work structure defining at least about 25% void space.
- 25. The process of claim 24 further comprising applying additional liquid precursor to selected portions of the sheet and curing the additional liquid precursor to heat resistant polymer to increase the stiffness of the composite article while maintaining at least about 25% void space in the open work structure.
- 26. The process of claim 19 wherein the organic polymer has a softening point of at least about 175° C.
- 27. The process of claim 19 wherein the organic polymer has a softening point of at least about 225° C.
