Claims
- 1. Method of fabricating a tire comprising the steps of
- (a) laying a uniform layer of any appropriate gum stock over the surface of a half torus mold;
- (b) positioning a rigid tire flange on supports that locate the tire flange on the inner diameter of the half torus mold and on the surface of the first layer of gum stock;
- (c) threading a rubber sheathed steel cable through peripheral apertures in the tire flange and looping both ends over retractable pins located on the outer diameter of the half torus mold and retaining the ends evenly tensioned and spaced apart to a position adjacent to the tire flange to form a radial reinforcement cord mat;
- (d) applying a second uniform layer of appropriate gum stock over the radial reinforcement cord mat;
- (e) placing a cover mold on the assembly and curing to produce a half tire section having a rigid tire flange therein on its inner diameter and a frill of uniformly spaced reinforcement cord loops extending beyond the cured gum stock on its outer diameter.
- 2. A method according to claim 1 and further comprising the steps of:
- (a) joining two cured half tire sections by lacing reinforcement cords through alternate loops of those extending from each half section on their outer diameters thus tying the half sections together mechanically with an appropriate gap between them to permit a subsequent sealing operation.
- 3. A method according to claim 2 further comprising the steps of filling the gap between the half torus sections with gum stock and curing to produce an integral torus.
- 4. A method according to claim 1 or 2 further comprising the steps of:
- (a) positioning a uniform layer of gum stock on a cylindrical drum of appropriate diameter and length;
- (b) positioning a mat of cylindrical steel cables on the first layer of gum stock;
- (c) positioning a second uniform layer of gum stock on the cylindrical drum on top of the first layer and on top of the mat to form a thin flexible woven steel based sleeve;
- (d) winding a continuous rubber sheathed steel cable circumferentially around the sleeve commencing at the outer edge tangent point and extending said winds in uniformly spaced rows across the surface of the sleeve to the tangent point on its other side and anchoring the cable, and adding a further layer of gum stock over said circumferentially wound cable, and curing same;
- (e) folding in the terminal side edges of the sleeve to form the tread belt base and positioning preformed tread bars with said belt base to complete the tread belt, the assembly then being bonded;
- (f) placing the formed torus into central position intermediate the terminal side edges of the belt and bonding said inner torus to said belt and adding a preformed fillet of tough, flexible rubber material in the area between the curvature of the sleeve and the torus and bonding thereto.
- 5. A method according to claim 4 and comprising the additional steps of forming flexible, tubular hoops and bonding said hoops at least to the exposed sidewall of the torus intermediate the tread belt chamber and the base wheel to which the tire is adapted to be attached.
- 6. A method of fabricating a radially reinforced tire half section comprising the steps of:
- (a) laying a uniform layer of any appropriate gum stock over the surface of one section of a half torus mold;
- (b) mounting a rubber sheathed steel cable on the first layer of gum stock in the form of a succession of trasverse loops to form a radial reinforcement cord mat; the loop ends located on the outer diameter projecting out of the half torus mold;
- (c) applying a second layer of appropriate gum stock over the radial reinforcement cord mat;
- (d) placing a cover mold on the assembly and curing such to produce a half tire section having a frill of uniformly spaced reinforcement cable loops extending beyond the outer diameter of the cured half torus.
- 7. A method according to claim 6 and further comprising the steps of:
- (a) joining two cured half torus tire sections by lacing reinforcement cords through the cable loops extending from each half section on their outer diameters, thus mechanically tying the half sections together with a gap between them to permit a subsequent bonding operation.
- 8. A method according to claim 7 further comprising the steps of filling the gap between the half torus sections with gum stock and curing same to produce an integral torus.
- 9. A method according to claim 8 further comprising the steps of:
- (a) forming a second torus of substantially greater diameter than that of the interconnected half torus sections, said second torus including rubber layers reinforced by an integrally incorporated mater of reinforcing cables;
- (b) collapsing the central portions of the second torus to form a solid tread belt base;
- (c) positioning preformed tread bars in abutment with said belt base and bonding the assembly to form a tread belt; and
- (d) placing the first formed torus in a central position intermediate the terminal side edges of the tread belt base and bonding the outer periphery of said inner torus to said tread belt.
- 10. A method according to claim 9 comprising the additional steps of forming flexible, tubular hoops and bonding said hoops at least to the exposed side wall of the first formed torus at a position intermediate the tread belt and the inner periphery of the first formed torus.
- 11. A method according to claim 9 or 10 comprising the additional steps of adding a preformed fillet of tough, flexible rubber material in the area between the first formed torus and the adjacent lateral surfaces of the uncollapsed portions of the second formed torus, and bonding said fillets thereto.
