Claims
- 1. A method for producing an integral composite metal member comprising the steps of:
- (a) pouring a molten metal into a cooled mold system to form a continuously solidifying cast strip which has a portion thereof continuously emerging from said cooled mold system;
- (b) accepting said continuously solidifying cast strip between cooled rollers disposed on each side of said continuously solidifying cast strip;
- (c) applying a thin layer of metal on at least one side of said continuously emerging portion of said cast strip; and
- (d) pressing said thin layer of metal onto the continuously emerging portion of said cast strip, whereby the cast strip forms a metallurgical bond with said layer of metal.
- 2. A method according to claim 1 in which said thin layer of metal is delivered as particulate metal.
- 3. A method according to claim 2 wherein the thin layer is applied by means of a series of rollers.
- 4. A method according to claim 2 in which said particulate material is dry powder.
- 5. A method according to claim 2 in which said particulate material is slurry.
- 6. A method according to claim 3 further comprising the application of a second thin layer of metal in which said particulate material is applied between said continuously emerging portion of said cast strip and said second layer of metal.
- 7. A method according to claim 1 in which said thin layer of metal is delivered as a metal slurry.
- 8. A method according to claim 7 wherein the thin layer is applied by means of a series of rollers.
- 9. A method according to claim 1 in which said thin layer of metal is delivered as a metal strip.
- 10. A method according to claim 9 wherein the thin layer is applied by means of a series of rollers.
- 11. A method according to claim 1 in which the thin layer of metal is applied between said molten metal and at least one face of the cooled mold system before the molten metal begins to form a continuously solidifying cast strip.
- 12. A method according to claim 1 in which the step of applying at least one layer of metal between the molten metal and at least one face of the cooled mold system before the molten metal begins to form a continuously solidifying cast strip, whereby the molten metal forms a metallurgical bond with said layer of metal.
- 13. A method according to claim 1 in which the step of applying at least one layer of metal between the continuously solidifying cast strip and at least one face of the cooled rollers, whereby the continuously solidifying cast strip forms a metallurgical bond with said layer of metal.
- 14. A method according to claim 1 in which the step of applying at least one layer of metal to the continuously solidifying cast strip after the cooled rollers, whereby the cast strip forms a metallurgical bond with said layer of metal.
- 15. A method for producing an integral composite metal member comprising the steps of:
- (a) pouring a molten metal into a cooled mold system to form a continuously solidifying cast strip which has a portion thereof continuously emerging from said cooled mold system;
- (b) accepting said continuously emerging portion of said cast strip between cooled rollers disposed on each side of said continuously emerging portion of said cast strip;
- (c) applying a thin layer of metal on at least one side of said continuously emerging portion of said cast strip; and
- (d) pressing said thin layer of metal onto the continuously emerging portion of said cast strip, said method further comprising the step of applying at least one layer of metal between the molten metal and at least one face of the cooled mold system before the molten metal begins to form a continuously solidifying cast strip, whereby the molten metal forms a metallurgical bond with said layer of metal.
- 16. A method according to claim 15 in which said layer of metal is left exposed on one face of said continuously emerging portion of said cast strip.
- 17. A method according to claim 15 in which a second thin layer of metal is applied between said molten metal and said layer of metal before the molten metal begins to form a continuously solidifying cast strip.
