Claims
- 1. A multilayer structural article comprising (1) a composite paper core layer which has a thickness of from 0.4 to about 4 millimeters and which has two major surfaces and (2) a thermoplastic polymer layer adhered to each major surface of said core layer, said thermoplastic polymer layers each comprising one or more thermoplastic polymers and from 0 to about 25 weight percent, based on the weight of said thermoplastic polymer, of inorganic fibrous or particulate reinforcing or filler material; provided further that the ratio of the coefficient of linear thermal expansion (CLTE) of one of the thermoplastic polymer layers divided by the coefficient of linear thermal expansion of the other thermoplastic polymer layer is in the range of 0.85 to 1.15; and the composite paper core layer of said article has a resistance to delamination of 0.2 lbs/in (35 N/m) or greater.
- 2. A structural article according to claim 1 wherein the thermoplastic polymer is selected from the group consisting of homopolymers of styrene, rubber modified homopolymers of styrene, copolymers of styrene and acrylonitrile, rubber modified copolymers of styrene and acrylonitrile, polymethyl methacrylate, polycarbonate, polyvinylchloride, polyethylene, polypropylene and blends thereof.
- 3. A structural article according to claim 1 wherein both thermoplastic polymer layers comprise the same thermoplastic polymer and have substantially the same thickness.
- 4. A three layer structural sheet material comprising a central core layer comprising a composite paper having two major surfaces, and two outer surface layers adhered to both major surfaces of a central core layer, said outer surface each comprising a thermoplastic resin and devoid of reinforcing fibrous or filler material; provided further that the ratio of the linear coefficient of thermal expansion of one surface layer thermoplastic resin divided by the linear coefficient of thermal expansion of the other surface layer thermoplastic resin is in the range of 0.95 to 1.05; and the composite paper has a density from 20 to 250 lbs/ft.sup.3 (320 kg/m.sup.3 to 4000 kg/m.sup.3), a tensile strength at room temperature of at least 200 lbs/in.sup.2 (9.58 kPa), a resistance to delamination of at least 0.57 lbs/in (100 N/m), and a Tabor Stiffness of from 20 to 250.
- 5. The structural article of claim 1 wherein each thermoplastic polymer layer, individually, has a thickness of from about 0.1 to about 2.5 mm.
- 6. The structural article according to claim 1 wherein the composite paper core layer comprises, on a total composite paper weight basis, (a) from about 1 to about 30 weight percent of a water dispersible organic fiber, (b) from about 2 to about 30 weight percent of water insoluble, film forming organic polymer and (c) from about 60 to about 95 weight percent of a particulate, non-fibrous inorganic filler.
- 7. The structural article of claim 6 wherein the composite paper core layer further comprises, on a composite paper weight basis, from about 1 to about 5 weight percent of glass fibers.
- 8. The structural article of claim 6 wherein the composite paper employed to form the core layer of said article further comprises, on a composite paper weight basis, from about 3 to about 15 weight percent of a normally solid thermoplastic polymer in particulate or fibrous form.
- 9. The structural article of claim 1 wherein the CLTE ratio of the two thermoplastic polymer layers is from 0.97 to 1.03 and wherein said thermoplastic polymer layers are substantially equal in thickness.
- 10. The structural article of claim 9 wherein the CLTE ratio of the two thermoplastic polymer layers is from 0.99 to 1.01.
- 11. The structural article of claim 4 wherein the two thermoplastic resin outer layers are substantially equal in thickness.
- 12. The structural article of claim 1 wherein the CLTE ratio of the two thermoplastic polymer layers is from 0.95 to 1.05.
- 13. The structural article of claim 1 wherein the total thickness thereof is from 0.51 to 2.54 mm.
- 14. The structural article of claim 1 wherein the total thickness thereof is from about 1 to about 3.6 mm.
- 15. The structural article of claim 1 wherein the total thickness thereof is from about 3.8 to about 12.7 mm.
- 16. The structural article of claim 1 wherein the thickness of the composite paper core layer is from about 0.5 to about 1.5 mm.
- 17. The structural article of claim 1 wherein each thermoplastic polymer layer has a thickness of from about 0.1 to about 5 mm.
- 18. The structural article of claim 1 wherein each thermoplastic polymer layer has a thickness of from about 0.1 to about 0.75 mm.
- 19. The structural article of claim 1 wherein each thermoplastic polymer layer has a thickness of from about 0.1 to about 1.5 mm.
- 20. The structural article of claim 19 wherein each thermoplastic polymer layer has a thickness of at least about 0.5 mm.
