Claims
- 1. A prestressed structural apparatus comprising:
- a plurality of girders extending in a longitudinal direction, said girders being spaced from one another in a transverse direction with respect to said girders; and
- a plurality of adjacent composite units disposed above said girders and extending in said transverse direction between said girders, each composite unit comprising:
- a plurality of beams extending in said transverse direction and attached to a top edge of said girders while said girders are in a construction position supported adjacent to center portions thereof with cantilevered ends of said girders allowed to deflect downwardly due to the weight thereof and the weight of said composite units; and
- a molded deck portion disposed at least partially above said beams.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said beams are attached by welding to said girders in said construction position.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a connector extending from each of said beams, wherein the corresponding molded deck portion is molded around said connectors.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said composite units are prefabricated prior to attaching said beams to said girders.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein said composite units are formed in an inverted position such that the material of said molded deck portions is prestressed in said transverse direction.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said composite units are positioned such that a lower edge of each molded deck portion engages a facing lower edge of an adjacent molded deck portion such that a generally V-shaped gap between facing sides of adjacent molded deck portions is defined.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein said gap is filled with a high strength, non-shrinking grout.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein said grout has a compressive strength at least as great as a compressive strength of said molded deck portions.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein facing transversely extending sides of adjacent molded deck portions of said composite units are substantially flush with one another and in abutment.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a diaphragm disposed in said longitudinal direction between said beams of each composite units.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein said diaphragm is attached to a corresponding girder.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 10 further comprising a connecting plate attached to at least one of said diaphragms and an adjacent beam.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein each composite unit further comprises a longitudinal beam disposed between a pair of said first mentioned beams extending in said transverse direction.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 13 further comprising a connector extending from said longitudinal beam, wherein the corresponding molded deck portion is molded around said connector.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 13 wherein said longitudinal beam extends along said top edge of a corresponding girder and is attached thereto.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a girder extension attached to at least one of said girders and extending from an end thereof for use in positioning the apparatus in an operating position.
