Claims
- 1. A method of making a composite structural member comprising:
providing an elongated flange having a pocket, the pocket formed by two side walls extending from a base wall; providing an elongated web having opposed narrow edges; mounting a portion of the web within the pocket of the flange with one edge of the web abutting the base wall of the flange to form an elongated, assembled unit; feeding the assembled unit in a longitudinal direction; forming fasteners from the side walls of the flange while the side walls are diverging from the web; and moving the side walls against the web to press the integral, formed, fasteners into the web to securely join the flange to the web.
- 2. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein each side wall of the flange has inner and outer wall panels joined by a fold line spaced from the base wall.
- 3. A method as claimed in claim 2 wherein the fasteners are formed adjacent the fold line in each side wall, each fastener including a portion of the fold line.
- 4. A method as claimed in claim 1 including the step of spreading the side walls away from the web during feeding of the unit before the fasteners are formed.
- 5. A method as claimed in claim 3 including the step of spreading the side walls away from the web during feeding of the unit before the fasteners are formed.
- 6. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the fasteners are formed by punching out the fasteners from the side walls.
- 7. A method as claimed in claim 6 wherein the fasteners are formed during a stoppage in the feeding of the assembled unit.
- 8. A method as claimed in claim 3 wherein the fasteners are formed by punching out the fasteners from the side walls.
- 9. A method as claimed in claim 8 wherein the fasteners are formed during a stoppage in the feeding of the assembled unit.
- 10. A method as claimed in claim 3 wherein each fastener is formed by cutting the side wall along a line that angles to, and intersects, the fold line, and then bending the side wall portion defined between the cut line and fold line out of the plane of the side wall toward the other side wall.
- 11. A method as claimed in claim 10 wherein the fasteners are formed during a stoppage in the feeding of the assembled unit.
- 12. A method as claimed in claim 5 wherein each fastener is formed by cutting the side wall along a line that angles to, and intersects, the fold line, and then bending the side wall portion defined between the cut line and fold line out of the plane of the side wall toward the other side wall.
- 13. A method as claimed in claim 12 wherein the fasteners are formed during stoppage in the feeding of the assembled unit.
- 14. An apparatus for use in making a composite structural member, the member having an elongated flange with two side walls and a base wall forming a pocket, and an elongated web with opposed edges, the web partly within the pocket with one edge abutting the base wall and fasteners in the side wall penetrating the web; the apparatus having: an elongated support table, moving means on the table for moving an unattached, assembled, web and flange as a unit in a longitudinal direction along the table; a forming station on the table for forming fasteners in each of the side walls of the flange while the side walls diverge from the web; and a pressing station on the table, following the forming station, for pressing the side walls of the flange against the web while pressing the newly formed fasteners into the web to securely fasten the flange to the web.
- 15. An apparatus as claimed in claim 14 including a diverging station on the table in front of the forming station; the diverging station having guide plates for causing the side walls of the flange to diverge away from the web.
- 16. An apparatus as claimed in claim 14 including anvil means at the forming station, located between each side wall and the web for supporting the side walls while fasteners are formed in the side walls.
- 17. An apparatus as claimed in claim 15 including anvil means at the forming station located between each side wall and the web for supporting the side walls while fasteners are formed in the side walls.
- 18. An apparatus as claimed in claim 14 wherein the forming means include a plurality of punches for simultaneously forming a plurality of fasteners at the forming station while the unit is stationary, the punches carried by a support movable toward and away from the side wall.
- 19. An apparatus as claimed in claim 15 wherein the forming means include a plurality of punches for simultaneously forming a plurality of fasteners at the forming station while the unit is stationary, the punches carried by a support movable toward and away from the side wall.
