Claims
- 1. A composite yarn comprising
- a core comprising a longitudinal synthetic fiber strand;
- an adhesive layer positioned radially outwardly of said core and comprising at least one melt-fusible thermoplastic fiber strand longitudinally oriented with said synthetic fiber strand of said core; and
- a primary core containment barrier positioned radially outwardly of said adhesive layer and comprising a synthetic fiber strand wrapped about said adhesive layer;
- wherein the melt point of said thermoplastic fiber strand of said adhesive layer is lower than the melt point of said synthetic fiber strand of said core and said synthetic fiber strand of said primary core containment barrier.
- 2. The composite yarn of claim 1 further comprising
- an outer layer positioned radially outwardly of said primary core containment barrier and comprising a synthetic fiber strand wrapped about said primary core containment barrier in a direction opposite to the direction of said synthetic fiber strand of said primary core containment barrier.
- 3. The composite yarn of claim 2 wherein
- said synthetic fiber strand of said core is fiberglass;
- said at least one thermoplastic fiber strand of said adhesive layer is terpolyamide;
- said synthetic fiber strand of said primary core containment barrier is nylon; and
- said synthetic fiber strand of said outer layer is nylon.
- 4. The composite yarn of claim 3 wherein
- said fiberglass fiber strand of said core has a denier of about 900;
- said at least one terpolyamide fiber strand of said adhesive layer comprises a plurality of circumferentially spaced fiber strands longitudinally oriented about said fiberglass fiber strand of said core;
- said nylon fiber strand of said primary core containment barrier has a denier of about 840 and is wrapped about said adhesive layer at about 8 turns per inch; and
- said nylon fiber strand of said outer layer has a denier of about 840 and is wrapped about said primary core containment barrier at about 8 turns per inch.
- 5. A composite yarn comprising
- a core comprising a plurality of longitudinal wire strands;
- an inner core containment barrier positioned radially outwardly of said core and comprising a synthetic fiber strand wrapped about said core;
- an adhesive layer positioned radially outwardly of said core and comprising at least one melt-fusible thermoplastic fiber strand longitudinally oriented with said wire strands of said core; and
- a primary core containment barrier positioned radially outwardly of said adhesive layer and comprising a synthetic fiber strand wrapped about said adhesive layer;
- wherein the melt point of said thermoplastic fiber strand of said adhesive layer is lower than the melt point of said synthetic fiber strand of said inner core containment barrier and said synthetic fiber strand of said primary core containment barrier.
- 6. The composite yarn of claim 5 wherein
- each of said plurality of wire strands of said core is stainless steel;
- said synthetic fiber strand of said inner core containment barrier is extended chain polyethylene;
- said at least one thermoplastic fiber strand of said adhesive layer is polyethylene; and
- said synthetic fiber strand of said primary core containment barrier is TFE fluorocarbon.
- 7. The composite yarn of claim 6 wherein
- each of said plurality of stainless steel wire strands of said core has a diameter of about 35 microns;
- said extended chain polyethylene fiber strand of said inner core containment barrier has a denier of about 650 and is wrapped about said core at about 5 turns per inch;
- said at least one polyethylene fiber strand of said adhesive layer comprises a plurality of low density polyethylene monofilament strands having a diameter of about 0.005 inches;
- said TFE fluorocarbon fiber strand of said primary core containment barrier has a denier of about 200 and is wrapped about said adhesive layer at about 12 turns per inch.
- 8. A composite yarn comprising
- a core comprising a longitudinal synthetic fiber strand, a first wire strand wrapped about said synthetic fiber strand of said core and a second wire strand wrapped about said synthetic fiber strand of said core in a direction opposite to the direction of said first wire strand of said core;
- an adhesive layer positioned radially outwardly of said synthetic fiber stand of said core and comprising at least one melt-fusible thermoplastic fiber stand longitudinally oriented with said synthetic fiber strand of said core; and
- a primary core containment barrier positioned radially outwardly of said core and said adhesive layer, said primary core containment barrier comprising at least one first synthetic fiber strand commingled with a second synthetic fiber strand and wrapped about said core and said adhesive layer;
- wherein the melt point of said thermoplastic fiber strand of said adhesive layer is lower than the melt point of said synthetic fiber strand of said core, said first synthetic fiber strand of said primary core containment barrier and said second synthetic fiber strand of said primary core containment barrier.
- 9. The composite yarn of claim 8 further comprising
- an outer layer positioned radially outwardly of said primary core containment barrier and comprising a synthetic fiber strand wrapped about said primary core containment barrier in a direction opposite to the direction of said at least one first synthetic fiber strand commingled with said second synthetic fiber strand of said primary core containment barrier.
- 10. The composite yarn of claim 9 wherein
- said synthetic fiber strand of said core is KEVLAR and said first wire strand and said second wire strand of said core are stainless steel;
- said at least one thermoplastic fiber strand of said adhesive layer is terpolyamide;
- said at least one first synthetic fiber strand of said primary core containment barrier is polyethylene and said second synthetic fiber strand of said primary core containment barrier is polyester; and
- said synthetic fiber strand of said outer layer is polyester.
- 11. The composite yarn of claim 10 wherein
- said KEVLAR fiber strand of said core has a denier of about 1000 and said first stainless steel wire strand and said second stainless steel wire strand of said core have a diameter of about 0.0045 inches;
- said at least one terpolyamide fiber strand of said adhesive layer comprises a plurality of circumferentially spaced fiber strands longitudinally oriented about said KEVLAR fiber strand of said core;
- said at least one polyethylene first fiber strand of said primary core containment barrier has a denier of about 160 and said polyester second fiber strand of said primary core containment barrier has a denier of about 1000 and wherein said primary core containment barrier is wrapped about said second wire strand of said core at about 5 turns per inch; and
- said polyester fiber strand of said outer layer has a denier of about 1000 and is wrapped about said primary core containment barrier at about 5 turns per inch.
- 12. A composite yarn comprising
- a core comprising a longitudinal synthetic fiber strand and a wire strand wrapped about said synthetic fiber strand of said core;
- an adhesive layer positioned radially inwardly of said core and comprising at least one melt-fusible thermoplastic fiber strand longitudinally oriented with said synthetic fiber strand of said core; and
- a primary core containment barrier positioned radially outwardly of said adhesive layer and said core, said primary core containment barrier comprising a synthetic fiber strand wrapped about said core;
- wherein the melt point of said thermoplastic fiber strand of said adhesive layer is lower than the melt point of said synthetic fiber strand of said core and said synthetic fiber strand of said primary core containment barrier.
- 13. The composite yarn of claim 12 wherein
- said synthetic fiber strand of said core is polyester and said wire strand of said core is stainless steel;
- said at least one thermoplastic fiber strand of said adhesive layer is polyethylene; and
- said synthetic fiber strand of said primary core containment barrier is polyester.
- 14. The composite yarn of claim 13 wherein
- said polyester fiber strand of said core is has a denier of about 150 and said stainless steel wire strand of said core has a diameter of about 0.0045 inches;
- said at least one polyethylene fiber strand of said adhesive layer has a denier of about 100; and
- said polyester fiber strand of said primary core containment barrier has a denier of about 300 and is wrapped about said core at about 10 turns per inch.
