Claims
- 1. A case for a rocket motor, comprising:
- a cylindrical, metal shell having a plurality of apertures;
- a cylindrical, fiber reinforced plastic liner attached to the interior of said shell; and
- a layer of insulative material attached to the interior of said plastic liner.
- 2. A case for a rocket motor as defined in claim 1, wherein said fibers within said plastic liner are discontinuous.
- 3. A case for a rocket motor as defined in claim 1, wherein said plastic liner comprises a plurality of sheets of continuous, unidirectional fiber reinforcement bonded together by a thermoplastic resin.
- 4. A case for a rocket motor as defined in claim 1, wherein said metal shell is configured with fin attachments.
- 5. A case for a rocket motor as defined in claim 1, wherein said slots in said metal shell are substantially uniformly distributed in the metal shell.
- 6. A case for a rocket motor as defined in claim 5, wherein said slots are elongated with their length oriented along the axis of the metal shell.
- 7. A case for a rocket motor as defined in claim 1, wherein said plastic liner comprises a plurality of sheets of continuous, unidirectional fiber reinforcement bonded together by a thermoset resin.
- 8. A case for a rocket motor as defined in claim 7, wherein said thermoset resin comprises an epoxy polymer resin.
- 9. A case for a rocket motor as defined in claim 7, wherein at least one of said sheets is positioned such that said unidirectional fibers within said sheet are axially oriented such that the stiffness of the case is increased.
- 10. A case for a rocket motor as defined in claim 7, wherein at least one of said sheets is positioned such that said unidirectional fibers within said sheet are circumferentially oriented such that the hoop strength of the case is increased.
- 11. A hybrid case for a solid-propellant rocket motor, comprising:
- a cylindrical, metal shell having a plurality of slots; and
- a plurality of sheets of continuous, unidirectional fiber reinforcement bonded together by a thermoset, epoxy resin, said sheets of fiber reinforcement bonded together to form a cylindrical shape and attached as a liner to the interior of said metal shell.
- 12. A hybrid case for a solid-propellant rocket motor as defined in claim 11, wherein at least one of said sheets is positioned such that said unidirectional fibers within said sheet are circumferentially oriented such that the hoop strength of the case is increased.
- 13. A hybrid case for a solid-propellant rocket motor as defined in claim 11, wherein at least one of said sheets is positioned such that said unidirectional fibers within said sheet are axially oriented such that the stiffness of the case is increased.
- 14. A hybrid case for a solid-propellant rocket motor as defined in claim 11, wherein said slots in said metal shell are substantially uniformly distributed in the metal shell.
- 15. A hybrid case for a solid-propellant rocket motor as defined in claim 11, wherein said slots are elongated with their length oriented along the axis of the metal shell.
- 16. A hybrid case for a solid-propellant rocket motor as defined in claim 11, further comprising fin attachments attached to said metal shell.
- 17. A hybrid case for a solid-propellant rocket motor as defined in claim 11, further comprising a layer of insulative material attached to the interior of said liner.
