Claims
- 1. A bonded composite structure having a reinforced joint at a bond line, the structure being made by the process comprising the steps of:
- (a) positioning a strip made from cured resin and carrying Z-direction reinforcing pins embedded therein the strip being positioned along the bond line between at least two composite elements so that the pins in the strip form stubble on opposed surfaces of the strip and are substantially perpendicular or at an angle out of the plane of the bond line;
- (b) optionally, applying an adhesive on the interfaces between the strip and the elements;
- (c) heating the bond line to connect the elements about the strip with a resin bond to form a joint having Z-pin reinforced bonds between the elements and the strip, the pins penetrating into both elements.
- 2. The structure of claim 1 further comprising the step of:
- applying uncured resin to the surfaces of the strip that have the stubble and that are positioned so that the pins contact the elements, the resin protecting the pins and filling a volume defined by the stubble.
- 3. A bonded composite structure having a reinforced joint at a bond line, the structure being made by the process comprising the steps of:
- (a) positioning a strip made from cured resin and carrying Z-direction reinforcing pins, the strip being positioned along the bond line between at least two composite elements so that the pins in the strip form stubble on opposed surfaces of the strip and are substantially perpendicular or at an angle out of the plane of the bond line, wherein the strip includes a metal susceptor heatable with an induction coil, the susceptor being encased in the resin;
- (b) optionally, applying an adhesive on the interfaces between the strip and the elements;
- (c) heating the bond line to connect the elements about the strip with a resin bond to form a joint having Z-pin reinforced bonds between the elements and the strip, the pins penetrating into both elements.
- 4. The structure of claim 3 wherein the elements are thermoplastic and the joint is a thermoplastic weld.
- 5. A bonded composite structure having a pin-reinforced thermoplastic weld, comprising:
- (a) at least two fiber-reinforced composite elements arranged to define a bond line along an interface between the elements;
- (b) a composite strip of cured resin having X-Y fiber reinforcement and Z-pin reinforcement, the strip being positioned along the bond line; and
- (c) a thermoplastic weld between each element and the strip along the interface, the welds including Z-pin reinforcement resulting from penetration of the Z-pins in the strip into each weld.
- 6. A bonded composite structure, comprising:
- a) at least two fiber-reinforced composite elements arranged to define a bond line along an interface between the elements;
- (b) a composite strip of cured resin having X-Y fiber reinforcement and Z-pin reinforcement, the strip being positioned along the bond line; and
- c) bonds between the elements and the strip along the interface, the bonds including Z-pin reinforcement resulting from penetration of the Z-pins in the strip into each bond,
- wherein the strip includes a metal susceptor susceptible to heating by magnetic induction.
- 7. The structure of claim 6 wherein the resin is thermoplastic and the bonds are thermoplastic welds.
- 8. The structure of claim 7 wherein the strip includes a metal susceptor susceptible to heating by magnetic induction.
- 9. The structure of claim 7 wherein the Z-pin reinforcement is carbon fiber, the resin includes polyimide, and the strip includes a metal susceptor susceptible to heating by magnetic induction.
