Claims
- 1. A composition for making a fluoroelastomer comprising:
(a) a fluoropolymer containing chlorine and (b) an organic compound comprising at least one hydride function MH wherein M is selected from the group consisting of Si, Ge, Sn and Pb, with the proviso that when said fluoropolymer comprises a unit derived from CF2ClBr or a fluoroolefin containing chlorine and having 2 to 8 carbon atoms and said organic compound corresponds to the formula: 5wherein R represents a hydrocarbon group optionally comprising one or more substituents and wherein the R groups may be the same or different and whereby two R groups may be linked to each other so as to form a ring, M is as defined above, q is a value of 1 to 3, x is a value of 1 to 3, y and z represent a value of 0 to 3 and the sum of y+z=4−x, the fluoropolymer is free from bromine.
- 2. A composition for making a fluoroelastomer comprising:
(a) a fluoropolymer containing chlorine in an amount of 0.01% to 15% by weight based on the weight of the fluoropolymer; and (b) an organic compound comprising at least one hydride function MH wherein M is selected from the group consisting of Si, Ge, Sn and Pb.
- 3. A composition for making a fluoroelastomer comprising:
(a) a fluoropolymer containing chlorine; (b) a polyhydroxy compound; and (c) an organic compound comprising at least one hydride function MH wherein M is selected from the group consisting of Si, Ge, Sn and Pb.
- 4. A composition for making a fluoroelastomer comprising:
(a) a fluoropolymer containing chlorine and having a bimodal or multimodal molecular weight distribution; and (b) an organic compound comprising at least one hydride function MH wherein M is selected from the group consisting of Si, Ge, Sn and Pb.
- 5. A composition according to claim 1 wherein said composition comprises a free radical generating compound and a coagent having one or more groups capable of participating in a free radical cure reaction.
- 6. A composition according to claim 1 wherein said organic compound comprising at least one hydride function MH corresponds to the formula:
- 7. A composition according to claim 1 wherein said organic compound is a polymeric compound and said hydride function is comprised in a terminal group and/or comprised in a repeating unit of said polymeric compound.
- 8. A composition according to claim 1 wherein said organic compound is a siloxane having one or more —SiH functions.
- 9. A composition according to claim 1 wherein said organic compound is a siloxane having one or more —OSiH groups.
- 10. A composition according to claim 1 wherein said organic compound is a siloxane that corresponds to the formula:
- 11. A composition according to claim 1 wherein said organic compound is a polysiloxane corresponding to the formula:
- 12. A composition according to claim 1 wherein said organic compound is a disiloxane or a cyclic polysiloxane.
- 13. A composition according to claim 1 wherein said organic compound is a cyclic siloxane corresponding to the formula:
- 14. A composition according to claim 1 wherein said fluoropolymer further comprises bromine and/or iodine.
- 15. A composition according to claim 1 wherein said fluoropolymer is a copolymer comprising repeating units derived from a fluorinated monomer and a monomer having one or more chlorine atoms.
- 16. A composition according to claim 15 wherein said monomer having one or more chlorine atoms is a fluorinated monomer having one or more chlorine atoms.
- 17. A composition according to claim 15 wherein said monomer having one or more chlorine atoms is selected from the group consisting of vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride and a fluoroolefin having one or more chlorine atoms.
- 18. A composition according to claim 15 wherein said fluoropolymer is a copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and/or vinylidene fluoride and a fluorolefin having one or more chlorine atoms and optionally one or more monomers selected from the group consisting of C3-C8 fluorinated olefins, fluorinated vinyl ethers, fluorinated allyl ethers, ethylene and propylene.
- 19. A composition according to claim 5 wherein said free radical generating compound comprises an organic peroxide and said coagent is a polyunsaturated organic compound.
- 20. A composition according to claim 19 wherein said coagent is selected from the group consisting of triallyl-cyanurate, triallyl-isocyanurate, triallyl trimellitate, tris(diallylamino)-s-triazine, triallyl-phosphite, N,N-diallylacrylamide, hexaallyl-phosphoramide, N,N′-m-phenylenebismaleimide, diallyl-phthalate and tri(5-norbornene-2-methylene)-cyanurate.
- 21. A composition according to claim 19 wherein said fluoropolymer comprises one of more halogens on a terminating group, said halogens being capable of participating in an organic peroxide cure reaction.
- 22. A fluoroelastomer composition derivable from the curing of a composition of claim 5.
- 23. Shaped article comprising the fluoroelastomer composition of claim 23.
- 24. Multi-layer article comprising a layer of a fluoroelastomer derivable from curing of the composition of claim 5.
- 25. Multi-layer article according to claim 24 wherein said layer of said fluoroelastomer is bonded to a layer of thermoplastic fluoropolymer.
- 26. Multi-layer article according to claim 25 wherein said thermoplastic fluoropolymer comprises chlorine, bromine, iodine, or combinations thereof.
- 27. Multi-layer article according to claim 24 wherein said layer of said fluoroelastomer is bonded to a silicone rubber.
- 28. A method comprising utilizing chlorine atoms of a chlorine containing fluoropolymer as cure sites in a free radical cure reaction to obtain a cured fluoroelastomer composition from a curable fluoroelastomer composition that contains said chlorine containing fluoropolymer, a free radical generating compound, a compound having one or more groups capable of participating in a free radical cure reaction and an organic compound having at least one hydride function MH wherein M is selected from the group consisting of Si, Ge, Sn and Pb.
- 29. A premix for preparing a curable fluoroelastomer composition, said premix comprising a fluoropolymer containing chlorine an organic compound containing at least one hydride function MH and said curable fluoroelastomer composition being derivable from said premix by adding thereto an organic peroxide.
- 30. Method of making a fluoroelastomer comprising providing a curable fluoroelastomer composition as defined in claim 5 and heating said curable fluoroelastomer composition to obtain a desired level of curing.
- 31. Method of making a chlorine containing fluoropolymer having chlorine in an end group, said method comprising the polymerization of one or more fluorinated monomers optionally in combination with one or more non-fluorinated monomers and wherein the polymerization is initiated with an initiator that contains chlorine atoms and/or with a free radical initiator in the presence of a chlorine source.
