Claims
- 1. A process for separating fluids that comprises bringing a mixture of two or more fluids into contact with a membrane comprising as a film of up to about 1,000 microns thick or a hollow fiber a polyaromatic polymer including aromatic repeat units of which at least 5 mole percent are substituted by moieties having ethylenically unsaturated carbon bonds wherein the polymer is crosslinked by carbon bonds through ethylenically unsaturated moieties and has improved properties of durability sufficient for enabling said membrane to effectively perform in processes selected from the group consisting of natural gas purification, hydrogen recoveries, syngas processes, separation of carbon dioxide or hydrogen sulfide from hydrocarbons, and enrichment of oxygen and nitrogen from air streams.
- 2. A process of claim 1 wherein the fluids are gaseous.
- 3. A process of claim 2 wherein the fluid is natural gas.
- 4. A process of claim 3 wherein the membrane comprises a polyaromatic polymer including aromatic repeat units having the formula: ##STR4## in which: W is oxygen or CR.sub.5 R.sub.6, provided W is oxygen when n is O;
- R each independently is hydrogen, halogen, R.sub.2 C.dbd.CR.sub.3 R.sub.4, C.sub.1 to C.sub.8 alkyl radical optionally halogenated at the alpha position, C.sub.5 to C.sub.7 cycloalkyl radical, C.sub.1 to C.sub.8 alkoxy radical, C.sub.6 to C.sub.12 aryl radical, aralkyl radical, alkaryl radical, each radical being free of a tertiary alpha-carbon atom, with the proviso that at least 5 mole percent of the repeat units contain an R.sub.2 C.dbd.CR.sub.3 R.sub.4 moiety;
- R.sub.2, R.sub.3, and R.sub.4 independently are hydrogen, halogen, C.sub.1 to C.sub.18 aliphatic radical, C.sub.5 to C.sub.7 cycloaliphatic radical, C.sub.6 to C.sub.12 aryl radical, aralkyl radical, or alkaryl radical;
- R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 independently are hydrogen, C.sub.1 to C.sub.18 aliphatic radical unsubstituted or halogen substituted, C.sub.5 to C.sub.7 cycloaliphatic radical, C.sub.6 to C.sub.12 aryl radical, aralkyl radical, or alkaryl radical; or ##STR5## n is O or 1.
- 5. A process of claim 4 wherein the aromatic repeat units have the formula: ##STR6## in which R each independently is hydrogen, halogen, R.sub.2 C.dbd.CR.sub.3 R.sub.4, C.sub.1 to C.sub.8 alkyl radical optionally halogenated at the alpha position, C.sub.5 to C.sub.7 cycloalkyl radical, C.sub.1 to C.sub.8 alkoxy radical, C.sub.6 to C.sub.12 aryl radical, aralkyl radical, alkaryl radical, each radical being free of a tertiary alpha-carbon atom, with the proviso that at least 5 mole percent of the repeat units contain an R.sub.2 C.dbd.CR.sub.3 R.sub.4 moiety; and
- R.sub.2, R.sub.3, and R.sub.4 independently are hydrogen, halogen, C.sub.1 to C.sub.18 aliphatic radical, C.sub.5 to C.sub.7 cycloaliphatic radical, C.sub.6 to C.sub.12 aryl radical, aralkyl radical, or alkaryl radical.
- 6. A process of claim 5 wherein the aromatic repeat units are benzyl and phenyl-brominated 2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxides.
- 7. A process for making a polymeric film useful as a semipermeable fluid separation membrane that comprises:
- casting a solution of a polymer in a solvent wherein the polymer includes aromatic repeat units of which at least 5 mole percent are substituted by moieties having ethylenically unsaturated carbon bonds, and
- crosslinking the polymer by forming carbon bonds between at least some of the moieties having ethylenically unsaturated carbon bonds before complete solvent removal from the solution while the solution essentially is still fluid to produce a membrane having improved properties of durability sufficient when used in processes selected from the group consisting of natural gas purification, hydrogen recoveries, syngas processes, separation of carbon dioxide or hydrogen sulfide from hydrocarbons, and enrichment of oxygen and nitrogen from air streams.
- 8. A process of claim 7 wherein the polymer includes aromatic repeat units of the formula: ##STR7## in which: W is oxygen or CR.sub.5 R.sub.6, provided W is oxygen when n is O;
- R each independently is hydrogen, halogen, R.sub.2 C.dbd.CR.sub.3 R.sub.4, C.sub.1 to C.sub.8 alkyl radical optionally halogenated at the alpha position, C.sub.5 to C.sub.7 cycloalkyl radical, C.sub.1 to C.sub.8 alkoxy radical, C.sub.6 to C.sub.12 aryl radical, aralkyl radical, alkaryl radical, each radical being free of a tertiary alpha-carbon atom, with the proviso that at least 5 mole percent of the repeat units contain an R.sub.2 C.dbd.CR.sub.3 R.sub.4 moiety;
- R.sub.2, R.sub.3, and R.sub.4 independently are hydrogen, halogen, C.sub.1 to C.sub.18 aliphatic radical, C.sub.5 to C.sub.7 cycloaliphatic radical, C.sub.6 to C.sub.12 aryl radical, aralkyl radical, or alkaryl radical;
- R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 independently are hydrogen, C.sub.1 to C.sub.18 aliphatic radical unsubstituted or halogen substituted, C.sub.5 to C.sub.7 cycloaliphatic radical, C.sub.6 to C.sub.12 aryl radical, aralkyl radical, or alkaryl radical; or ##STR8## and n is O or 1.
- 9. A process of claim 8 wherein the polymer includes aromatic repeat units of the formula: ##STR9## in which R each independently is hydrogen, halogen, R.sub.2 C.dbd.CR.sub.3 R.sub.4, C.sub.1 to C.sub.8 alkyl radical optionally halogenated at the alpha position, C.sub.5 to C.sub.7 cycloalkyl radical, C.sub.1 to C.sub.8 alkoxy radical, C.sub.6 to C.sub.12 aryl radical, aralkyl radical, alkaryl radical, each radical being free of a tertiary alpha-carbon atom, with the proviso that at least 5 mole percent of the repeat units contain an R.sub.2 C.dbd.CR.sub.3 R.sub.4 moiety; and
- R.sub.2, R.sub.3, and R.sub.4 independently are hydrogen, halogen, C.sub.1 to C.sub.18 aliphatic radical, C.sub.5 to C.sub.7 cycloaliphatic radical, C.sub.6 to C.sub.12 aryl radical, aralkyl radical, or alkaryl radical.
- 10. A process of claim 9 wherein the aromatic repeat units are benzyl and phenyl-brominated 2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxides.
- 11. A process of claim 7 wherein crosslinking the polymer comprises using radiation.
- 12. A process of claim 11 wherein the radiation is ultraviolet light.
- 13. A process of claim 12 wherein the solution of a polymer includes a photoinitiator.
- 14. A process for making an asymmetric semipermeable fluid separation membrane that comprises
- forming a polymer solution in a solvent wherein the polymer includes aromatic repeat units of which at least 5 mole percent are substituted by moieties having ethylenically unsaturated carbon bonds;
- casting a thin film of the polymer solution; and
- gelling the polymer solution in non-solvent for the polymer to produce a membrane having improved properties of durability sufficient when used in processes selected from the group consisting of natural gas purification, hydrogen recoveries, syngas processes, separation of carbon dioxide or hydrogen sulfide from hydrocarbons, and enrichment of oxygen and nitrogen from air streams.
- 15. The process of claim 14 wherein the polymer includes aromatic repeat units of the formula: ##STR10## in which: W is oxygen or CR.sub.5 R.sub.6, provided W is oxygen when n is O;
- R each independently is hydrogen, halogen, R.sub.2 C.dbd.CR.sub.3 R.sub.4, C.sub.1 to C.sub.8 alkyl radical optionally halogenated at the alpha position, C.sub.5 to C.sub.7 cycloalkyl radical, C.sub.1 to C.sub.8 alkoxy radical, C.sub.6 to C.sub.12 aryl radical, aralkyl radical, alkaryl radical, each radical being free of a tertiary alpha-carbon atom, with the proviso that at least 5 mole percent of the repeat units contain an R.sub.2 C.dbd.CR.sub.3 R.sub.4 moiety;
- R.sub.2, R.sub.3, and R.sub.4 independently are hydrogen, halogen, C.sub.1 to C.sub.18 aliphatic radical, C.sub.5 to C.sub.7 cycloaliphatic radical, C.sub.6 to C.sub.12 aryl radical, aralkyl radical, or alkaryl radical;
- R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 independently are hydrogen, C.sub.1 to C.sub.18 aliphatic radical unsubstituted or halogen substituted, C.sub.5 to C.sub.7 cycloaliphatic radical, C.sub.6 to C.sub.12 aryl radical, aralkyl radical, or alkaryl radical; or ##STR11## and n is O or 1.
- 16. A process of claim 15 wherein the polymer includes aromatic repeat units of the formula: ##STR12## in which R each independently is hydrogen, halogen, R.sub.2 C.dbd.CR.sub.3 R.sub.4, C.sub.1 to C.sub.8 alkyl radical optionally halogenated at the alpha position, C.sub.5 to C.sub.7 cycloalkyl radical, C.sub.1 to C.sub.8 alkoxy radical, C.sub.6 to C.sub.12 aryl radical, aralkyl radical, alkaryl radical, each radical being free of a tertiary alpha-carbon atom, with the proviso that at least 5 mole percent of the repeat units contain an R.sub.2 C.dbd.CR.sub.3 R.sub.4 moiety; and
- R.sub.2, R.sub.3, and R.sub.4 independently are hydrogen, halogen, C.sub.1 to C.sub.18 aliphatic radical, C.sub.5 to C.sub.7 cycloaliphatic radical, C.sub.6 to C.sub.12 aryl radical, aralkyl radical, or alkaryl radical.
- 17. A process of claim 16 wherein the aromatic repeat units are benzyl and phenyl-brominated 2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxides.
- 18. A process of claim 15 further comprising the step of at least partial solvent evaporation from the polymer solution after casting.
- 19. A process of claim 15 further comprising the step of crosslinking the polymer by forming carbon bonds between at least some of the moieties having ethylenically unsaturated carbon bonds.
- 20. A process of claim 19 wherein at least some of the crosslinking is completed before complete solvent removal from the polymer solution while the solution essentially is still fluid.
- 21. A process of claim 19 wherein crosslinking the polymer comprises using radiation or thermal means.
- 22. A process of claim 21 wherein crosslinking the polymer comprises using radiation.
- 23. A process of claim 22 wherein the radiation is ultraviolet light or electron beam.
- 24. A process of claim 22 wherein the radiation is ultraviolet light.
- 25. A process of claim 24 wherein the polymer solution includes a photoinitiator.
