Claims
- 1. A filter material comprising a polymer host and a dye which includes a Co+2 compound, a Ni+2 compound or a mixture thereof; wherein the filter material has a transmittance at 500 nm of at least 80% and a transmittance between 650 and 700 nm of no more than 10%; and the dye has a melting point of no more than a temperature well below room temperature.
- 2. The filter material of claim 1, wherein said filter material has a sharp cutoff between 600 and 640 nm.
- 3. The filter material of claim 1, wherein said filter material is non-luminescent.
- 4. The filter material of claim 1, wherein the dye comprises a Co+2XnYz(A+)2 compound; where
X is Cl—; Y is Br—; n and z are at least 0; n+z=4; and A+ is a tetraalkylammonium cation.
- 5. The filter material of claim 1, wherein A+ is a tetraalkylammonium cation having at least 15 carbon atoms.
- 6. The filter material of claim 1, wherein A+is a methyltrialkylammonium cation.
- 7. The filter material of claim 4, further comprising a tetraalkylammonium halide.
- 8. The filter material of claim 1, wherein the dye comprises a Ni+2XnYz(A+)2 compound; where
X is Cl—; Y is Br—; n and z are at least 0; n+z=4; and A+ is a tetraalkylammonium cation.
- 9. The filter material of claim 1, wherein the dye further comprises TOMA.
- 10. The filter material of claim 1, wherein the dye comprises a CO(OPAr3)2+ compound.
- 11. The filter material of claim 1, wherein the Co(OPAr3)2+ compound comprises a Co(OPPh3)42+ salt, Co(OAc)2(OPPh3)2 or a mixture thereof.
- 12. The filter material of claim 1, wherein the dye comprises a Co(OP(O)(OAlkyl)2)2 compound.
- 13. A filter material comprising a polymer host and a non-luminescent dye material having an absorption maxima between 600 and 800 nm and a melting point of no more than about 60° C.;
wherein the dye material comprises a Co+2 compound, a Ni+2 compound or a mixture thereof.
- 14. The filter material of claim 13, wherein the polymer host comprises an acrylate polymer, a methacrylate polymer or a mixture thereof.
- 15. The filter material of claim 13, wherein the methacrylate polymer comprises PMMA, a methyl methacrylate/butyl methacrylate copolymer or a mixture thereof.
- 16. The filter material of claim 13, wherein the polymer host comprises a crosslinked acrylate polymer, a crosslinked methacrylate polymer or a mixture thereof.
- 17. A filter precursor material comprising a monomeric component and a non-luminescent dye having an absorption maxima between 600 and 800 nm and a melting point of no more than about 60° C.; wherein the dye includes a Co+2 compound, a Ni+2 compound or a mixture thereof; and the monomeric component is capable of polymerizing to form a polymer host doped with the dye.
- 18. The filter precursor material of claim 17, wherein the monomeric component includes (a) an acrylate monomer, a methacrylate monomer, or a mixture thereof; (b) a diacrylate monomer, a dimethacrylate monomer, a triacrylate monomer, a trimethacrylate monomer, or a mixture thereof; and (c) a photoinitiator.
- 19. The filter precursor material of claim 17, wherein the monomeric component includes (a) a hydroxy functional monomer; and (b) a monomer which includes at least two polymerizable functional groups.
- 20. The filter precursor material of claim 17, wherein the monomeric component includes (a) a hydroxy functional alpha,beta-unsaturated ester monomer; and (b) a monomer which includes at least two alpha,beta-unsaturated ester functional groups.
- 21. The filter precursor material of claim 17, further comprising a tetraalkylammonium halide.
- 22. The filter precursor material of claim 17, wherein the non-luminescent dye comprises a (TOMA)2CoX4 salt; where X is a halide ion or mixture of halide ions.
- 23. A non-luminescent dye material having an absorption maxima between 600 and 800 nm and a melting point of no more than about 72° C.; said dye material comprising a M+2XnYz(A+)2 compound;
wherein M+2 is Co+2, Ni+2 or a mixture thereof; X and Y are halides; n and z are at least 0 and n+z=4; and A+ is a tetraalkylammonium cation.
- 24. The dye material of claim 23 having a sharp cutoff between 600 and 640 nm.
- 25. The dye material of claim 23, wherein X is Cl—; Y is Br—.
- 26. The dye material of claim 23, wherein M+2 is Co+2.
- 27. The dye material of claim 23, wherein A+ is a tetraalkylammonium cation having at least 15 carbon atoms.
- 28. The dye material of claim 23, wherein A+ is a methyltrialkylammonium cation.
- 29. The dye material of claim 23, wherein A+ is a methyltrioctylammonium cation.
- 30. The dye material of claim 23, further comprising a tetraalkylammonium halide.
- 31. The dye material of claim 30, wherein the M+2XnYz(A+)2 compound comprises a CO+2XnYz(A+)2 compound; where X is Cl— and Y is Br—; and the tetraalkylammonium halide is a tetraalkylammonium chloride, a tetraalkylammonium bromide, or a mixture thereof.
- 32. The dye material of claim 30, wherein A+ is a methyltrialkylammonium cation; and the tetraalkylammonium halide is a methyltrialkylammonium chloride, a methyltrialkylammonium bromide, or a mixture thereof.
- 33. The dye material of claim 30, wherein said dye material comprising a Co+2Br4(A+)2 compound; and A+ is a methyltrialkylammonium cation having at least 15 carbon atoms.
- 34. A filter material comprising a dye which includes a nonluminescent tetrahedrally coordinated Co(II) compound, a tetrahedrally coordinated Ni(II) compound or a mixture thereof; wherein the filter material has a transmittance at 500 nm of at least 80% and a longer wavelength steep cutoff absorption band with a transmittance of no more than 10%.
- 35. The filter material of claim 34, wherein the dye has a low propensity to crystallize and/or a high solubility in a matrix.
- 36. The filter material of claim 34, wherein the dye comprises a CO2+X−mY−nA+2 compound; where
X is Cl—; Y is Br—; n and m are at least 0; n+m=4; and A is a cation.
- 37. The filter material of claim 36, wherein A is a quaternary ammonium or phosphonium cation or mixture thereof.
- 38. The filter material of claim 36, wherein A is a methyltrialkylammonium cation.
- 39. The filter material of claim 36, further comprising a quaternary ammonium halide.
- 40. The filter material of claim 34, wherein the dye comprises a Ni2+X−mY−nA+2 compound; where
X is Cl−; Y is Br−; n and m are at least 0; n+m=4; and A is a cation.
- 41. The filter material of claim 34, wherein the dye comprises a Co(OPR3)42+ compound, where R is an alkyl, an aryl, an alkaryl or mixture thereof.
- 42. The filter material of claim 41, wherein the Co(OPR3)42+ compound comprises a Co(OPPh3)42+ salt, where Ph is phenyl.
- 43. The filter material of claim 34, wherein the dye comprises a Co[OP(O)(OR)2]2 compound, where R is an alkyl, an aryl, an alkaryl or mixture thereof.
- 44. A filter material comprising a polymer host and a non-luminescent dye material having a steep cutoff absorption a maximum between 600 and 800 nm;
wherein the dye material comprises a Co(II) compound, a Ni(II) compound or a mixture thereof.
- 45. The filter material of claim 44, wherein the polymer host comprises an acrylate polymer, an acrylate copolymer or a mixture thereof.
- 46. The filter material of claim 44, wherein the acrylate polymer comprises poly(methylmethacrylate), poly(ethylmethacrylate), a methyl methacrylate/butyl methacrylate copolymer or a mixture thereof.
- 47. A filter precursor material comprising a monomeric component and a non-luminescent dye having a steep cutoff absorption with a maximum between 600 and 800 nm; wherein the dye includes a Co(II) compound, a Ni(II) compound or a mixture thereof; and the monomeric components are capable of polymerizing to form a polymer host doped with the dye.
- 48. The filter precursor material of claim 47, further comprising a quaternary ammonium halide.
- 49. A non-luminescent dye material having a steep cutoff absorption with a maximum between 600 and 800 nm; said dye material comprising M2+X−mY−nA+2 compound;
wherein M is Co2+, Ni2+ or a mixture thereof; X− and Y− are halide ions; m and n are at least 0 and m+n=4; and A+ is a quaternary ammonium cation.
- 50. The dye material of claim 49, wherein X is Cl—; Y is Br—.
- 51. The dye material of claim 49, wherein M2+ is Co2+.
- 52. The dye material of claim 49, wherein the M2+X−mY−nA+2 compound comprises a Co2+X−mY−nA+2 compound; where X is Cl− and Y is Br−; and the tetraalkylammonium halide is a tetraalkylammonium chloride, a tetraalkylammonium bromide, or a mixture thereof.
- 53. The dye material of claim 49, wherein said dye material comprising a Co2+X−mY−nA+2 compound; and A+ is a methyltrialkylammonium cation having at least 25 carbon atoms.
