Claims
- 1. A pharmaceutical composition for the administration of an active component to stimulate melanin production in a vertebrate which comprises at least one active component of the group:
- (1) alpha-MSH having the formula
- Ac--Ser--Tyr--Ser--Met--Glu--His--Phe--Arg--Trp--Gly--Lys--Pro--Val--NH.sub.2 ;
- (2) alpha-MSH analogues having the formula
- Ac--Ser--Tyr--Ser--M--Glu--His--D--Phe--Arg--Trp--Gly--Lys--Pro--Val--NH.sub.2
- wherein M is selected from the group consisting of Met, Nle, and Cys;
- (3) analogues of alpha-MSH having the formula
- R.sub.1 --W--X--Y--Z--R.sub.2
- wherein R.sub.1 is selected from the group consisting of Ac-Gly, Ac-Met-Glu, Ac-Nle-Glu, and Ac-Tyr-Glu; wherein W is selected from the group consisting of His and D-His; wherein X is selected from the group consisting of Phe, D-Phe, Tyr, D-Tyr, and (pNO.sub.2)D-Phe; wherein Y is selected from the group consisting of Arg and D-Arg; wherein Z is selected from the group consisting of Trp and D-Trp; and wherein R.sub.2 is selected from the group consisting of NH.sub.2, Gly-N.sub.2 and Gly-Lys-NH.sub.2 ; and
- (4) alpha-MSH analogues selected from the group consisting of
- [Nle.sup.4, D-Phe.sup.7 ]-alpha-MSH
- [Nle.sup.4, D-Phe.sup.7 ]-alpha-MSH.sub.4-10
- [Nle.sup.4, D-Phe.sup.7 ]-alpha-MSH.sub.4-11
- [Nle.sup.4, D-Phe.sup.7, D-Trp.sup.9 ]-alpha-MSH.sub.4-11
- [Nle.sup.4, D-Phe.sup.7 ]-alpha-MSH.sub.4-9
- said component being present in an amount sufficient to cause the production of melanin in said vertebrate, said composition further comprising a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier for administration of the active component to the vertebrate in which the stimulation of melanin production is desired.
- 2. The composition of claim 1 wherein the component is [Nle.sup.4, D-Phe.sup.7 ]-alpha-MSH.sub.4-10.
- 3. The composition of claim 1 wherein the component is [Nle.sup.4, D-Phe.sup.7 ]-alpha-MSH.sub.4-11.
- 4. The composition of claim 1 wherein the component is [Nle.sup.4, D-Phe.sup.7, D-Trp.sup.7, D-Trp.sup.9 ]-alpha-MSH.sub.4-11.
- 5. The composition of claim 1 wherein the component is [Nle.sup.4, D-Phe.sup.7 ]-alpha-MSH.sub.4-9.
- 6. The composition of claim 1 wherein the component is Ac-Ser-Tyr-Ser-Met-Glu-His-Phe-Arg-Trp-Gly-Lys-Pro-Val-NH.sub.2.
- 7. The composition of claim 1 wherein the component is Ac-Ser-Tyr-Ser-Cys-Glu-His-D-Phe-Arg-Trp-Gly-Lys-Pro-Val-NH.sub.2.
- 8. The composition of claim 1 wherein the component is an analogue of alpha-MSH in which X is D-Phe.
- 9. The composition of claim 1 wherein the component is an analogue of alpha-MSH in which R.sub.1 is Ac-Nle-Glu.
- 10. The composition of claim 1 wherein the component is an analogue of alpha-MSH in which R.sub.1 is Ac-Nle-Glu, and X is D-Phe.

The present application is a divisional of earlier filed U.S. patent application Ser. No. 154,823, filed Feb. 11th 1988 and now U.S. Pat. No. 4,918,055; this application is in turn a continuation of earlier filed U.S. patent application Ser. No. 852,162, filed Feb. 3rd 1986, and now abandoned.
Government Interests
Partial funding for the research leading up tot he making of the invention described herein was received from the United States Government. Accordingly, the Federal Government of the United States retains certain rights to the invention described herein under Chapter 38 of Title 35 of the United States Code.
