- 50. A composition comprising:
a solution comprising a metal organic salt and an aromatic organic liquid, said metal organic salt comprising a carboxylate moiety having eight or less carbon atoms, said metal constituting at least 10% by weight of said solution.
- 51. The composition of claim 50 in which said metal comprises an element selected from the group consisting of Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Eu, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Lu, In, Gd, Pb, and Yb.
- 52. The composition of claim 50 in which said aromatic organic liquid comprises a carboxylic acid.
- 53. The composition of claim 50 in which said composition comprises a complexing agent.
- 54. The composition of claim 50 in which said metal organic salt is substantially insoluble in water.
- 55. The composition of claim 50 in which said carboxylate moiety comprises five or more carbon atoms.
- 56. The composition of claim 50 in which said carboxylate moiety corresponds to a carboxylic acid selected from the group consisting of: acetic, propionic, isobutyric, butyric, isovaleric, trimethylacetic, methylbutyric, valeric, 2-methylvaleric, ethylbutyric, 2,2-dimethylvaleric, hexanoic, and ethylhexanoic.
- 57. The composition of claim 51 in which said metal comprises an element selected from the group consisting of Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Eu, Th, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm and Lu.
- 58. The composition of claim 51 in which said metal comprises an element selected from the group consisting of In, Gd, Pb, and Yb, and said composition is substantially free from scattering of light in a visible range of wavelengths.
- 59. The composition of claim 52 in which said carboxylic acid comprises trimethyl acetic acid.
- 60. The composition of claim 53 in which said complexing agent comprises an organophosphorus compound.
- 61. The composition of claim 56 in which said carboxylate moiety comprises a member selected from the group consisting of isovalerate and trimethylacetate.
- 62. The composition of claim 58 in which said carboxylate moiety comprises isovalerate.
- 63. The composition of claim 58 further comprising a fluorescent scintillator dye, said composition being capable of fluorescence.
- 64. The composition of claim 60 in which said complexing agent comprises a trialkyl phosphine oxide.
- 65. The composition of claim 62 in which said composition comprises a complexing agent.
- 66. The composition of claim 65 in which said complexing agent comprises an organophosphorus compound.
- 67. A composition prepared by a method for solvating at least 10 percent by weight of ions of a metal in an aromatic organic liquid using an organic reagent having less than or equal to 8 carbons, the step of solvating comprising:
making an aqueous solution of an inorganic compound of the metal; creating a metal organic salt from the aqueous solution of the inorganic compound of the metal, an aqueous solution of an ammonium salt, and a carboxylate reagent having eight or less carbon atoms; and extracting the metal organic salt into an aromatic organic liquid supernatant.
- 68. A composition prepared by a method for solvating metal ions in an aromatic organic liquid, comprising the steps of:
providing an aqueous solution of a metal salt and an aqueous solution of an ammonium carboxylate salt, said carboxylate having eight or less carbon atoms, and combining together an aromatic organic liquid with said aqueous solution of an ammonium carboxylate salt; and combining together said aromatic organic liquid and said aqueous solution of an ammonium carboxylate salt with said aqueous solution of a metal salt; yielding metal ions solvated in said aromatic organic liquid.
- 69. A composition prepared by a method for solvating metal ions in an aromatic organic liquid, comprising the steps of:
providing:
an aqueous solution of a metal salt; and an aqueous solution of an ammonium carboxylate salt, said carboxylate having eight or less carbon atoms; and an aromatic organic liquid combined together with at least one member selected from the group consisting of complexing agents and carboxylic acids; combining said aqueous solution of an ammonium carboxylate salt together with said aromatic organic liquid; and combining together said aromatic organic liquid and said aqueous solution of an ammonium carboxylate salt with said aqueous solution of a metal salt; yielding metal ions solvated in said aromatic organic liquid.
