Claims
- 1. A composition comprising one or more substituted succinimide derivatives represented by the formula: ##STR20## wherein R is a hydrocarbon-based group containing from about 8 up to about 35 carbon atoms, R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are each independently hydrogen or an alkyl group containing up to 8 carbon atoms wherein at least one of R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 is an alkyl group , R.sub.3 is a hydrocarbon-based group containing up to about 28 carbon atoms.
- 2. A composition according to claim 1 wherein R is an aliphatic hydrocarbon group, free from acetylenic unsaturation, containing from about 10 up to about 30 carbon atoms, in which at least 8 carbon atoms are in a straight-chain configuration and one of R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 is hydrogen.
- 3. A composition according to claim 2 wherein R.sub.3 is an aliphatic hydrocarbon group containing up to about 14 carbon atoms.
- 4. A composition prepared by reacting in the presence of a catalytic amount of base;
- A) one or more substituted succinimides represented by the formula: ##STR21## wherein R is a hydrocarbon-based group containing from about 8 up to about 35 carbon atoms;
- B) one or more carbonyl compounds represented by the formula: ##STR22## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are each independently hydrogen or an alkyl radical containing up to 8 carbon atoms;
- C) one or more alcohols represented by the formula:
- R.sub.3 --OH
- wherein R.sub.3 is a hydrocarbon-based group containing up to about 28 carbon-atoms.
- 5. A compositions according to claim 4 wherein at least one of R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 is hydrogen and R.sub.3 is an alkyl radical containing up to about 14 carbon atoms.
- 6. A composition according to claim 5 wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are hydrogen, and about one mole of water for each mole of carbonyl compounds is removed from the reaction and wherein the molar ratio of reactants A:B:C is 1:1-1.3:1.
- 7. A process which comprises reacting in the presence of a catalytic amount of base:
- A) one or more substituted succinimides represented by the formula: ##STR23## wherein R is hydrocarbon-based group containing from about 8 up to about 35 carbon atoms;
- B) one or more carbonyl compounds represented by the formula: ##STR24## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are each independently hydrogen or an alkyl radical containing up to 8 carbon atoms; and
- C) one or more alcohols represented by the formula:
- R.sub.3 --OH
- wherein R.sub.3 is a hydrocarbon-based group containing up to about 28 carbon atoms.
- 8. A process according to claim 7 wherein at least one of R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 hydrogen and R.sub.3 is an alkyl radical containing up to about 14 carbon atoms.
- 9. A process according to claim 8 wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are hydrogen, and about one mole of water for each mole of carbonyl compound is removed from the reaction and wherein the molar ratio of reactants A:B:C is 1:1-1.3:1.
- 10. An additive concentrate comprising a substantially inert, normally liquid organic diluent and from about 10 percent up to about 90 percent by weight of a composition according to claim 1.
- 11. A lubricating composition comprising a major amount of a lubricating oil and a minor amount of at least one composition according to claim 1.
- 12. A method for reducing fuel composition in an internal combustion engine which comprises lubricating said engine during operation with at least one lubricating composition according to claim 11.
