Claims
- 1. A bioactive glass composition comprising particulate bioactive and biocompatible glass having the following composition by weight percentage:
- ______________________________________ SiO.sub.2 40-60 CaO 10-30 Na.sub.2 O 10-35 P.sub.2 O.sub.5 2-8 CaF.sub.2 0-25 B.sub.2 O.sub.3 0-10______________________________________
- and a particle size range less than 90 .mu.m, wherein the particulate bioactive and biocompatible glass includes an effective dentin tubule occluding amount of particles less than about 10 .mu.m.
- 2. The bioactive glass composition of claim 1, wherein the particulate bioactive and biocompatible glass includes an effective dentin tubule occluding amount of particles less than about 5 .mu.m.
- 3. The bioactive glass composition of claim 1, wherein the particulate bioactive and biocompatible glass includes an effective dentin tubule occluding amount of particles less than about 2 .mu.m.
- 4. The bioactive glass composition of claim 1, wherein the particulate bioactive and biocompatible glass has a particle size range of less than about 70 .mu.m.
- 5. The bioactive glass composition of claim 1, wherein the particulate bioactive and biocompatible glass has a particle size range of less than about 50 .mu.m.
- 6. The bioactive glass composition of claim 1, wherein the particulate bioactive and biocompatible glass has a particle size range of less than about 40 .mu.m.
- 7. The bioactive glass composition of claim 1, wherein the particulate bioactive and biocompatible glass has a particle size range of less than about 30 .mu.m.
- 8. The bioactive glass composition of claim 1, wherein the particulate bioactive and biocompatible glass has a particle size range of less than about 20 .mu.m.
- 9. A method for treating dental hypersensitivity comprising contacting one or more hypersensitive teeth with an effective hypersensitivity reducing amount of the bioactive glass composition of claim 1.
- 10. The bioactive glass composition of claim 1, further comprising fluoride.
- 11. The bioactive glass composition of claim 1, wherein the SiO.sub.2 weight percentage is about 45%.
- 12. The bioactive glass composition of claim 1, wherein the SiO.sub.2 weight percentage is about 55%.
- 13. The bioactive glass composition of claim 1, wherein the SiO.sub.2 weight percentage is about 60%.
- 14. A composition for cleaning teeth comprising the composition of claim 1 and a toothpaste, glycerin gel or mouthwash.
- 15. The bioactive glass composition of claim 1, wherein said bioactive and bicompatible glass has an average particle size of about 20 microns with at least 30% less than 10 microns.
- 16. The bioactive glass composition of claim 1, wherein said bioactive and biocompatible glass has an average particle size of about 10 microns with at least 25% smaller than 2 microns.
- 17. The bioactive glass composition of claim 3, wherein the particulate bioactive and biocompatible glass has a particle size range of less than about 3 .mu.m.
- 18. A bioactive glass composition comprising a mixture of particulate bioactive and biocompatible glasses having the following composition by weight percentage:
- ______________________________________ SiO.sub.2 40-60 CaO 10-30 Na.sub.2 O 10-35 P.sub.2 O.sub.5 2-8 CaF.sub.2 0-25 B.sub.2 O.sub.3 0-10______________________________________
- wherein (a) at least one of the particulate bioactive and biocompatible glasses includes particles of about 2 .mu.m or less, and (b) at least one of the particulate bioactive and biocompatible glasses includes particles larger than about 2 .mu.m.
- 19. A bioactive glass composition comprising a mixture of particulate bioactive and biocompatible glasses having the following composition by weight percentage:
- ______________________________________ SiO.sub.2 40-60 CaO 10-30 Na.sub.2 O 10-35 P.sub.2 O.sub.5 2-8 CaF.sub.2 0-25 B.sub.2 O.sub.3 0-10______________________________________
- wherein (a) at least one of the particulate bioactive and biocompatible glasses includes particles of about 5 .mu.m or less, and (b) at least one of the particulate bioactive and biocompatible glasses includes particles larger than about 5 .mu.m.
- 20. A method for at least partially occluding dentin tubules comprising contacting said tubules with the bioactive and biocompatible glass composition of claim 19.
