Claims
- 1. A curable composition comprising
- (A) an initiator;
- (B) an alkoxide-polymerized addition homopolymer or copolymer of an ester of methacrylic acid wherein the polymer comprises mers having the formula ##STR6## wherein R is a (C.sub.2 -C.sub.4) alkenyl group, an allyloxyalkyl group having up to 12 carbon atoms, or an allyloxyalkoxyalkyl group having up to 12 carbon atoms,
- and, optionally, mers derivable from other anionically copolymerizable monomers, and wherein n, the average chain length of the polymer is about 6 to 50 mers; the polymerization being carried out, in the presence of an alcohol and a catalytic amount of an alkoxide, using controlled rates of addition of at least one of the ester, the alcohol and the alkoxide; and
- (C) optionally, a pigment.
- 2. The composition of claim 1 wherein the anionically-polymerized polymer is an alkoxide-polymerized polymer wherein at least about 85% by weight of the molecules of the polymer have chain lengths of about .sqroot.2n to about 2n mers.
- 3. The polymer of claim 2 wherein the average chain length is about 6 to about 25 mers.
- 4. The polymer of claim 2 wherein R is an allyl group.
- 5. The polymer of claim 2 wherein the polymer also comprises mers having the formula ##STR7## wherein R.sup.1 is a (C.sub.1 -C.sub.24) alkyl group.
- 6. The polymer of claim 5 wherein R.sup.1 is a (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4) alkyl group.
- 7. A composition comprising
- (A) an alkoxide-polymerized addition homopolymer or copolymer of an ester of methacrylic acid wherein the polymer comprises mers having the formula ##STR8## wherein R is a (C.sub.2 -C.sub.4) alkenyl group, an allyloxyalkyl group having up to 12 carbon atoms, or an allyloxyalkoxyalkyl group having up to 12 carbon atoms,
- and, optionally, mers derivable from other anionically copolymerizable monomers, and wherein n, the average chain length of the polymer is about 6 to 50 mers; the polymerization being carried out, in the presence of an alcohol and a catalytic amount of an alkoxide, using controlled rates of addition of at least one of the ester, the alcohol and the alkoxide;
- (B) about 1 to 50% by weight of water or an organic solvent; and
- (C) optionally, a pigment.
- 8. The composition of claim 7 wherein the anionically-polymerized polymer is an alkoxide-polymerized polymer wherein at least about 85% by weight of the molecules of the polymer have chain lengths of about .sqroot.2n to about 2n mers.
- 9. The polymer of claim 7 wherein the average chain length is about 6 to about 25 mers.
- 10. The polymer of claim 7 wherein R is an allyl group.
- 11. The composition of claim 7 wherein the polymer also comprises mers having the formula ##STR9## wherein R.sup.1 is a (C.sub.1 -C.sub.24) alkyl group.
- 12. The polymer of claim 11 wherein R.sup.1 is a (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4) alkyl group.
- 13. A coating, filling or adhesive process comprising applying the composition of claim 1 to a substrate and curing the composition.
- 14. A coating, filling or adhesive process comprising applying the composition of claim 7 to a substrate and drying the composition.
- 15. A coating, filling or adhesive process comprising applying an alkoxide-polymerized addition homopolymer or copolymer of an ester of methacrylic acid wherein the polymer comprises mers having the formula ##STR10## wherein R is a (C.sub.2 -C.sub.4) alkenyl group, an allyloxyalkyl group having up to 12 carbon atoms, or an allyloxyalkoxyalkyl group having up to 12 carbon atoms,
- and, optionally, mers derivable from other anionically copolymerizable monomers, and wherein n, the average chain length of the polymer is about 6 to 50 mers; the polymerization being carried out, in the presence of an alcohol and a catalytic amount of an alkoxide, using controlled rates of addition of at least one of the ester, the alcohol and the alkoxide;
- to a substrate and curing the polymer.
- 16. A process for producing a plasticized or modified second polymer comprising mixing an alkoxide-polymerized addition homopolymer or copolymer of an ester of methacrylic acid wherein the polymer comprises mers having the formula ##STR11## wherein R is a (C.sub.2 -C.sub.4) alkenyl group, an allyloxyalkyl group having up to 12 carbon atoms, or an allyloxyalkoxyalkyl group having up to 12 carbon atoms,
- and, optionally, mers derivable from other anionically copolymerizable monomers, and wherein n, the average chain length of the polymer is about 6 to 50 mers; the polymerization being carried out, in the presence of an alcohol and a catalytic amount of an alkoxide, using controlled rates of addition of at least one of the ester, the alcohol and the alkoxide;
- with the second polymer and curing the mixture.
- 17. An article produced by the process of claim 13.
- 18. An article produced by the process of claim 14.
- 19. An article produced by the process of claim 15.
- 20. An article produced by the process of claim 16.
