Claims
- 1. A composition for enhancing the contrast in NMR imaging of the digestive tract of humans and animals, the composition comprising magnetically responsive particles in admixture with or chemically bonded to at least one physiologically acceptable water insoluble carrier phase, said carrier phase being mucoadhesive and water-swellable, wherein said mucoadhesive carrier phase comprises polymers and copolymers of acrylic acid cross-linked with polyfunctional allyl acrylates or with polyfunctional allyl ethers of glycols or sugars and, to control the rate of transit through the digestive tract, said composition has an administrable pH of between 1 and 8.
- 2. The composition of claim 1, wherein the carrier further comprises polymers having carboxy, sulfate, sulfonate, phosphate and phosphonate groups free or in the form of alkali- or alkaline-earth metal salts.
- 3. The composition of claim 2 wherein the carrier comprises polysulfated or polyphosphonated carbohydrate polymers.
- 4. The composition of claim 1, wherein the carrier is admixed with magnesium alginate, pectin, hydroxylated coatable polysaccharides, Attapulgite clay, Montmorillonite clay or mixtures thereof.
- 5. The composition of claim 1 further comprising a dispersion of contrast-enhancing particles in an aqueous solution of a water-soluble polymer carrier, the amount of said particles to said water-soluble polymer carrier, measured dry, not exceeding 5% wt.
- 6. The composition of claim 5, wherein the proportion of said dispersion of contrast-enhancing particles is up to 99% of the total of the composition and the water-soluble polymer carrier is a non-metabolizable polymer selected from the group consisting of dextran, polyvinyl-pyrrolidone, carboxymethyl-cellulose and hydroxypropyl-cellulose.
- 7. The composition of claim 1, wherein the particles are bonded to the bioadhesive carrier substrate by a chemical coupler.
- 8. The composition of claim 7, wherein said coupler reactively binds to the particles and binds to the carrier.
- 9. The composition of claim 8, wherein said chemical coupler has a trialkoxy-silane function which binds to the magnetic particles by forming a silicon-containing bond.
- 10. A method for the NMR imaging of the digestive tract of a human or animal patient comprising (a) orally or enterally administering to said patient an NMR imaging comprising magnetically responsive particles in admixture with or chemically bonded to at least one physiologically acceptable water insoluble carrier phase, said carrier phase being mucoadhesive and water-swellable, wherein said mucoadhesive carrier phase comprises polymers and copolymers of acyrlic acid cross-linked with polyfunctional allyl acrylates or with polyfunctional allyl ethers of glycols or sugars and, to control the rate of transit through the digestive tract, said composition has an administrable pH of between 1 and 8; and thereafter (b) imaging successive sections of the digestive tract as said imaging composition transits therethrough.
- 11. The method of claim 10, wherein the carrier further comprises polymers having carboxy, sulfate, sulfonate, phosphate and phosphonate groups free or in the form of alkali- or alkaline-earth metal salts.
- 12. The method of claim 10 wherein the carrier comprises polysulfated or polyphosphonated carbohydrate polymers.
- 13. The method of claim 10, wherein the carrier is admixed with magnesium alginate, pectin, hydroxylated coatable polysaccharides, Attapulgite clay, Montmorillonite clay or mixtures thereof.
- 14. The method of claim 10 further comprising a dispersion of contrast-enhancing particles in an aqueous solution of a water-soluble polymer carrier, the amount of said particles to said water-soluble polymer carrier, measured dry, not exceeding 5% wt.
- 15. The method of claim 10, wherein the proportion of said dispersion of contrast-enhancing particles is up to 99% of the total of the composition and the water-soluble polymer carrier is a non-metabolizable polymer selected from the group consisting of dextran, polyvinyl-pyrrolidone, carboxymethyl-cellulose and hydroxypropyl-cellulose.
- 16. The method of claim 10, wherein the particles are bonded to the bioadhesive carrier substrate by a chemical coupler.
- 17. The method of claim 10, wherein said coupler reactively binds to the particles and binds to the carrier.
- 18. The method of claim 10, wherein said chemical coupler has a trialkoxy-silane function which binds to the magnetic particles by forming a silicon-containing bond.
