Claims
- 1. A composition for removing metal ions from an aqueous process solution, the composition, comprising a non-metallic compound, which is capable of forming a complex with a metal ion, entrapped within or supported onto a support material.
- 2. The composition according to claim 1, wherein the non-metallic compound is a thiuram.
- 3. The composition according to claim 2, wherein the thiuram is characterized by the general chemical formula (I),
- 4. The composition according to claim 3, wherein the thiuram is selected from the group consisting of tetramethylthiuram monosulfide, bis(dimethyldithiocarbamoyl) disulfide, tetrabenzylthiuram disulfide, tetraethylthiuram disulfide, tetrabutylthiuram disulfide, dipentamethylenethiuram tetrasulfide, and mixtures thereof.
- 5. The composition according to claim 2 further comprising a non-metallic compound that is a dithiocarbamate entrapped within or supported onto the support material.
- 6. The composition according to claim 5, wherein the dithiocarbamate is characterized by the general chemical formula (II),
- 7. The composition according to claim 6, wherein the dithiocarbamate is selected from the group consisting of sodium dimethyldithiocarbamate, sodium diethyldithiocarbamate, sodium dibenzyldithiocarbamate, sodium dibutyldithiocarbamate, and mixtures thereof.
- 8. The composition according to any of claims 1, 2 or 5, wherein the support material is selected from the group consisting of natural and synthetic polymers, organic compounds, inorganic compounds, and mixtures thereof.
- 9. A composition obtained by a process for entrapping or supporting a non-metallic compound within or onto a support, the process comprising, contacting a non-metallic compound composition comprising a thiuram with a support material.
- 10. The composition of claim 9, wherein the non-metallic compound composition further comprises a dithiocarbamate.
- 11. The composition of claim 10, wherein the thiuram is characterized by the general chemical formula (I),
- 12. A process for removing metal ions from an aqueous process solution, comprising:
reacting the metal ions in the aqueous process solution with a treatment composition comprising a non-metallic compound entrapped within or supported onto a support material, wherein the metal ions and the non-metallic compound form an organometallic complex precipitate.
- 13. The process according to claim 12, wherein the aqueous solution further comprises a wetting agent.
- 14. The process according to claim 12, wherein the reacting step is conducted at a temperature of less than or equal to about 50° C.
- 15. The process according to claim 12, wherein the non-metallic compound is a thiuram.
- 16. The process according to claim 15, wherein the thiuram is characterized by the general chemical formula (I),
- 17. The process according to claim 16, wherein the thiuram is selected from the group consisting of tetramethylthiuram monosulfide, bis(dimethyldithiocarbamoyl) disulfide, tetrabenzylthiuram disulfide, tetraethylthiuram disulfide, tetrabutylthiuram disulfide, dipentamethylenethiuram tetrasulfide, and mixtures thereof.
- 18. The process according to claim 15, wherein the treatment composition further comprises an additional non-metallic compound that is a dithiocarbamate entrapped within or supported onto the support material.
- 19. The process according to claim 18, wherein the dithiocarbamate is characterized by the general chemical formula (II),
- 20. The process according to claim 19, wherein the dithiocarbamate is selected from the group consisting of sodium dimethyldithiocarbamate, sodium diethyldithiocarbamate, sodium dibenzyldithiocarbamate, sodium dibutyldithiocarbamate, and mixtures thereof.
- 21. The process according to any of claims 12, 15 or 18, wherein the support material is selected from the group consisting of natural and synthetic polymers, organic compounds, inorganic compounds, and mixtures thereof.
- 22. The process according to any of claims 12, 15 or 18, wherein the metal ion is selected from the group consisting of arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, cesium, copper, iron, lead, mercury, nickel, selenium, silver, technetium, thallium, zinc, actinides, lanthanides, mixtures thereof, and alloys thereof.
- 23. A product obtained from a process for removing metal ions from an aqueous process solution, comprising:
reacting the metal ions in the aqueous process solution with a treatment composition comprising a non-metallic compound entrapped within or supported onto a support material, wherein the metal ions and the non-metallic compound form an organometallic complex.
- 24. The product of claim 23, wherein the aqueous process solution further comprises a wetting agent.
- 25. The product of claim 23, wherein the reacting step is conducted at a temperature of less than or equal to about 50° C.
- 26. The product of claim 23, wherein the non-metallic compound is a thiuram.
- 27. The product of claim 26, wherein the thiuram is characterized by the general chemical formula (I),
- 28. The product of claim 27, wherein the thiuram is selected from the group consisting of tetramethylthiuram mono sulfide, bis(dimethyldithiocarbamoyl) disulfide, tetrabenzylthiuram disulfide, tetraethylthiuram disulfide, tetrabutylthiuram disulfide, dipentamethylenethiuram tetrasulfide, and mixtures thereof.
- 29. The product of claim 26, wherein the treatment composition further comprises an additional non-metallic compound that is a dithiocarbamate entrapped within or supported onto the support material.
- 30. The product of claim 29, wherein the dithiocarbamate is characterized by the general chemical formula (II),
- 31. The product of claim 30, wherein the dithiocarbamate is selected from the group consisting of sodium dimethyldithiocarbamate, sodium diethyldithiocarbamate, sodium dibenzyldithiocarbamate, sodium dibutyldithiocarbamate, and mixtures thereof.
- 32. The product according to any of claims 23, 26 or 29, wherein the support material is selected from the group consisting of natural and synthetic polymers, organic compounds, inorganic compounds, and mixtures thereof.
- 33. The product according to any of claims 23, 26 or 29, wherein the metal ion is selected from the group consisting of arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, cesium, copper, iron, lead, mercury, nickel, selenium, silver, technetium, thallium, zinc, actinides, lanthanides, mixtures thereof, and alloys thereof.
- 34. An organometallic composition, comprising:
an organometallic complex entrapped within or supported onto a support material, wherein the organometallic complex comprises a non-metallic compound associated with a metallic ion.
- 35. The composition according claim 34, wherein the non-metallic compound is a thiuram.
- 36. The composition according to claim 35, wherein the thiuram is characterized by the general chemical formula (I),
- 37. The composition according to claim 36, wherein the thiuram is selected from the group consisting of tetramethylthiuram monosulfide, bis(dimethyldithiocarbamoyl) disulfide, tetrabenzylthiuram disulfide, tetraethylthiuram disulfide, tetrabutylthiuram disulfide, dipentamethylenethiuram tetrasulfide, and mixtures thereof.
- 38. The composition according to claim 35, wherein the organometallic complex further comprises a non-metallic compound that is a dithiocarbamate.
- 39. The composition according to claim 38, wherein the dithiocarbamate is characterized by the general chemical formula (II),
- 40. The composition according to claim 39, wherein the dithiocarbamate is selected from the group consisting of sodium dimethyldithiocarbamate, sodium diethyldithiocarbamate, sodium dibenzyldithiocarbamate, sodium dibutyldithiocarbamate, and mixtures thereof.
- 41. The composition according to any of claims 34, 35 or 38, wherein the support material is selected from the group consisting of natural and synthetic polymers, organic compounds, inorganic compounds, and mixtures thereof.
- 42. The composition according to any of claims 34, 35 or 38, wherein the metal ion is selected from the group consisting of arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, cesium, copper, iron, lead, mercury, nickel, selenium, silver, technetium, thallium, zinc, actinides, lanthanides, mixtures thereof, and alloys thereof.
