- 3. The compound needle assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein the second terminal ends of the needle and closing element are in the general form of an inverted T with the oppositely extending cam butts being generally rectangular in shape and forming a portion of the base thereof.
- 4. The compound needle assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein the upper and lower marginal defining edges of said extending cam butts are of rounded perimetric configuration.
- 5. The compound needle assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein at least one of the extending cam butts on said needle and closing element includes a dependent tang extending from the outer marginal edge thereof.
- 6. The compound needle assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein said slot and said channel in said needle element are in coplanar relation.
- 7. The compound needle assembly as set forth in claim 1 further including an extending ferromagnetic pad portion disposed in adjacent spaced relation to the second terminal end of each said needle and closing element.
- 8. A needle element for a compound knitting needle member formed of such needle element and a closing element comprising an elongate body portion having knitting hook means at one terminal end thereof and transversely extending cam butt means at the other terminal end thereof,
- said body portion being selectively shaped intermediate said terminal ends to include,
- an upper bifurcated segment defining a channel for guiding the path of displacement of said closing element relative to said hook means,
- a lower slotted segment sized to accomodate the dependent end portion of said closing element and permit independent longitudinal and transverse displacement of said dependent end portion of said closing element relative thereto, and
- an intermediate segment of reduced cross sectional extend sized to permit elastic flexure of the cam butt means containing terminal end relative to said bifurcated segment of said body portion.
- 9. A needle element as set forth in claim 8 wherein said hook means and said cam butt means are positioned in essentially coplanar relation.
- 10. A needle element as set forth in claim 8 wherein said cam butt means includes a pair of spaced outwardly extending and coplanar cam butts.
- 11. A needle element as set forth in claim 8 wherein said cam butt means containing terminal end is in the general form of an inverted "T" including a pair of outwardly extending and generally rectangular cam butts disposed in spaced part relation forming the base thereof.
- 12. A needle element as set forth in claim 11 wherein one of said extending cam butts includes a dependent tang extending from the outer marginal edge thereof.
- 13. A needle element as set forth in claim 8 wherein the slot in said lower slotted segment is disposed essentially coplanar with said hook means and said the channel in the upper bifurcarted segment thereof.
- 14. A needle element as set forth in claim 11 wherein the slot in said lower slotted segment is disposed essentially coplanar with said hook means and said cam butt means and is of a length sufficient to permit a predetermined degree of reciprocable displacement of a portion of a closing element disposed therewithin and unrestricted transverse displacement relative thereto.
- 15. A needle element as set forth in claim 8 wherein said cam butt means includes a pair of coplanar, outwardly directed opposed spaced generally rectangular cam butts whose upper and lower marginal defining edges are of rounded perimetric contour.
- 16. A needle element as set forth in claim 8 further including an extending ferromagnetic pad portion disposed in adjacent spaced relation from the cam butt means containing terminal end thereof and dependently remote from said reduced cross section intermediate segment thereof.
- 17. A needle element as set forth in claim 13 wherein the upper and lower marginal defining edges of said slotted segment are of arcuate configuration to minimize stress concentration thereat.
- 18. A closing element for a compound knitting needle member comprising
- an elongate linear body portion having a tapered hook member engaging tip at one terminal end thereof and a pair of transversely disposed and oppositely extending cam butt means at the other terminal end thereof
- said body portion being selectively shaped intermediate said terminal ends to include
- a lower portion of reduced transverse extent sized to permit transversely directed bidirectional elastic flexure of the cam butt containing terminal end relative to said hook member engaging tip at said one terminal end of said elongate body portion.
- 19. A closing element as set forth in claim 18 wherein said cam butt means containing terminal end is in the general form of an inverted "T" including a pair of outwardly extending and generally rectangular cam butts disposed in spaced apart relation forming the base thereof.
