Claims
- 1. A compound of the formula:
- 2. The compound of claim 1 wherein the ring containing the alkylene chain is substituted with at least one group Z which confers water solubility.
- 3. The compound of claim 1 wherein the group R3 is substituted with at least one group Z which confers water solubility.
- 4. The compound of claim 1 wherein the ring connecting R1 and R2 comprises from five to seven atoms.
- 5. The compound of claim 2 wherein R3 is selected from alkyl, heteroalkyl, phenyl, and benzyl groups.
- 6. The compound of claim 2 wherein Z is selected from sulfonate salt groups, sulfate salt groups, phosphonate salt groups, phosphate salt groups, carboxylate salt groups, ammonium salt groups and phosphonium salt groups.
- 7. The compound of claim 3 wherein Z is selected from sulfonate salt groups, sulfate salt groups, phosphonate salt groups, phosphate salt groups, carboxylate salt groups, ammonium salt groups and phosphonium salt groups.
- 8. The compound of claim 1 wherein at least one of R4 to R11 is selected from alkyl, alkoxy, halogen, amino, or amino substituted with one or two alkyl or aryl groups and the remaining of R4 to R11 are hydrogen.
- 9. The compound of claim 1 wherein each of R4 to R11 is a hydrogen atom.

- 18. A method for producing chemiluminescence which comprises reacting a peroxidase enzyme with a peroxide and at least one compound of formula I to produce the chemiluminescence
- 19. The method of claim 18 wherein the ring containing the alkylene chain is substituted with at least one group Z which confers water solubility.
- 20. The method of claim 18 wherein the group R3 is substituted with at least one group Z which confers water solubility.
- 21. The method of claim 18 further comprising providing an enhancer compound which enhances the activity of the peroxidase.
- 22. The method of claim 18 further comprising providing an enhancer compound which enhances the activity of the peroxidase, the enhancer being selected from phenolic compounds, aromatic amines, substituted and unsubstituted arylboronic acids, arylboronic esters, arylboronic acid anhydrides, phenoxazines and phenothiazines.
- 23. A method for producing chemiluminescence which comprises reacting a peroxidase enzyme with a peroxide and at least one compound of formula I to produce the chemiluminescence
- 24. The method of claim 23 further comprising providing an enhancer compound which enhances the activity of the peroxidase.
- 25. The method of claim 23 further comprising providing an enhancer compound which enhances the activity of the peroxidase, the enhancer being selected from phenolic compounds, aromatic amines, substituted and unsubstituted arylboronic acids, arylboronic esters, arylboronic acid anhydrides, phenoxazines and phenothiazines.
- 26. The method of claim 23 wherein the fused second ring in the compound of formula I is a benzene ring or a substituted benzene ring.
- 27. The method of claim 23 wherein the fused second ring in the compound of formula Iis substituted with at least one group Z which confers water solubility.
