Claims
- 1. A method of making a preform insulating end cone for use in a pollution control device, said method comprising:
providing an intumescent or a non-intumescent insulating material in sheet form, the insulating material having an organic binder comprising a polymeric emulsion; treating the sheet with water or steam; forming the sheet into a conical shape having dimensions suitable for use in the pollution control device; and drying the conical shape to form the preform insulating end cone that is self-supporting.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the insulating material is intumescent.
- 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the insulating material comprises an intumescent material in an amount of about 20 to about 65 percent on a dry weight basis, inorganic fibrous material in an amount of about 10 percent to about 50 percent on dry weight basis, organic binder in an amount of about 3 to about 25 percent on a dry weight basis, and inorganic filler in an amount up to about 40 percent on a dry weight basis.
- 4. The method of claim 1, wherein said forming comprises placing the sheet in a mold.
- 5. The method of claim 1, wherein said forming comprises cutting slits in the sheet.
- 6. A method of making a preform insulating end cone for use in a pollution control device, the method comprising:
providing an intumescent or a non-intumescent insulating material in sheet form; treating at least one surface of the sheet with a rigidizing material comprising aqueous colloidal silica, silicon carbide, aqueous colloidal alumina, monoaluminum phosphate, magnesium phosphate, vermiculite emulsions, clay emulsions, or a combination thereof, forming the sheet into a conical shape having dimensions suitable for use in the pollution control device; and drying the conical shape to form a finished preform insulating end cone that is self-supporting.
- 7. The method of claim 6, wherein said the preform insulating end cone contains up to 10 weight percent rigidizing material on a dry weight basis.
- 8. The method of claim 6, wherein the rigidizing material comprises colloidal silica, aqueous colloidal alumina, or a combination thereof.
- 9. The method of claim 6, wherein said forming comprises placing the sheet in a mold.
- 10. The method of claim 6, wherein said forming comprises cutting slits in the sheet.
- 11. A method of making a preform insulating end cone for use in a pollution control device, the method comprising:
providing an intumescent or a non-intumescent insulating material in sheet form; forming the sheet into a conical shape having dimensions suitable for use in the pollution control device; applying a metal foil to a surface of the sheet to form a finished preform insulating end cone that is self-supporting.
- 12. The method of claim 11, wherein the metal foil has a thickness of about 0.076 mm to about 0.254 mm.
- 13. The method of claim 11, wherein the metal foil comprises aluminum.
- 14. The method of claim 11, wherein said forming comprises cutting slits in the sheet.
- 15. A method of making a preform insulating end cone for use in a pollution control device, the method comprising:
providing an intumescent or a non-intumescent insulating material in sheet form; forming the sheet into a conical shape having dimensions suitable for use in the pollution control device; applying a heat shrinkable film over a surface of said insulating material; and heating the heat shrinkable film to a sufficient temperature to shrink the heat shrinkable film and to form the finished preform insulating end cone that is self-supporting.
- 16. The method of claim 15, wherein the heat shrinkable film comprises a polyester.
- 17. The method of claim 15, wherein said forming comprises cutting slits in the sheet.
- 18. A method of making a preform insulating end cone for use in a pollution control device, the method comprising:
providing an intumescent or a non-intumescent insulating material in sheet form; forming the sheet into a conical shape having dimensions suitable for use in the pollution control device; applying a shape retaining element that is an adhesive tape to form the finished preform insulating end cone that is self-supporting.
- 19. The method of claim 18, further comprising laminating the sheet material to a thermoplastic film to form a laminate.
- 20. The method of claim 19, wherein the adhesive tape is applied to the thermoplastic film.
- 21. The method of claim 18, wherein said forming comprises cutting slits in the sheet.
- 22. A method of making a preform insulating end cone for use in a pollution control device, the method comprising:
providing an intumescent or a non-intumescent insulating material in sheet form, the insulating material having an organic binder comprising a thermoplastic or thermosetting polymeric material; forming said treated insulating material into the desired shape for the finished preform insulating end cone; heating the sheet to at least partially melt the polymeric material, to cure the polymeric material, or a combination thereof to form the finished preform insulating end cone that is self-supporting.
- 23. The method of claim 22, wherein said forming comprises cutting slits in the sheet.
