an input/output communication interface zone, an output-assessment-striving knowledge engine, and intermediary structure operatively interposed said zone and said engine and including a database, and assessment-refinement-capability substructure, in which system organization, data input presented at said interface zone is processed by the engine to progress toward an output assessment, and the engine, relative to a requested assessment, is capable of determining, from input data provided to date, and from assessment performance, if any, undergone to date, whether there is room for refinement, and if so determining that there is such room, implements refinement capabilities employing said assessment-refinement-capability substructure to engage in a dialog manner with said interface zone.
- 14. The system of claim 13, wherein refinement dialog can involve requests for both data addition and data subtraction.
- 15. The system of claim 13, wherein a characteristic of system operation is that an assessment process terminates when the knowledge engine determines that no further data activity, including assessment-refinement activity, will enable further differentiation, and isolation-identification, of the specifically addressed problem and/or situation.
- 16. The system of claim 13, wherein an output assessment can provide both positive ruling-in and positive ruling-out, of final conclusions.
- 17. A computer-based knowledge system designed for providing problem and situation assessments in a defined field of knowledge comprising,
a non-prioritized, generally egalitarian database which is relevant to the defined field of knowledge/inquiry, an input/output communication interface zone operatively connected to said database, a output-assessment-striving knowledge engine operatively connected to said database, and interconnection structure operatively interconnecting said database, said interface zone, and said engine, whereby the system's response to the input of initial input data to initiate an assessment output responds to input data in such a manner that all categories of such data are given equal input weight and voice with respect to the launching of the assessment process.
- 18. For use in a system designed for providing problem and situation assessments in a defined field of knowledge
a component database including plural data components, and among those data components, a pseudo-synonymous-type relationship between selected components based upon areas of common and shared relevance, whereby plural ones of selected, singular data components are operatively recognized in the system as being surrogate-representable as a group by singular other ones of the data components.
- 19. In a system designed for providing problem and situation assessments in a defined field of knowledge
a component database related to a defined field of knowledge, characterized by a content-reach toward completeness which is measured by the following selection characteristics: (a) all problems and/or situations are accounted for, and (b) the level of content granularity is such that additional granularity will not further enable final assessment differentiation and specificity.
- 20. In a computer-based knowledge system, designed for providing problem and situation assessments in a defined field of knowledge
a database characterized by the Bachman diagram of FIG. 4.
- 21. In a computer-based knowledge system designed for providing problem and situation assessments in a defined field of knowledge
a database characterized by the diagrams of FIGS. 4 and 5.
- 22. For use in a system designed to provide problem and/or situation assessments in a defined field of knowledge:
a component database related to that field of knowledge including elemental data points (EDPs) each characterized by one or the other following definitions: (a) containing one, and only one, field-associated data component consisting of a specific value that describes an aspect of a problem or a situation in the field; or (b) containing one or more such data components in the context of a field-associated problem type; and a knowledge engine operatively connected to said database and operable to employ said (a) and/or (b) type EDPs in the task of problem and/or situation assessment.
- 23. A process for building a component database for use in a system designed to provide problem and/or situation assessments in a defined field of knowledge, said process comprising
establishing a first category of data component each of which takes the form of a single specific value that describes an aspect of a problem or a situation in the field, establishing a second category of data components each of which takes the form of one or more of such first-mentioned data components in the context of a field-associated problem type, and organizing both categories of such data components into an assessable library which is employable in the operation of the system.
- 24. The process of claim 23 which further comprises effectively preparing such two categories of data components for differentiated access both to a user of the system and to a knowledge engine which forms part of the system, whereby the collection of apparent data components exposed to a user is greater in number than the apparent number of such components which are exposed to the knowledge engine.
- 25. The process of claim 24, wherein the mentioned differentiation is based upon relevance, and the establishment of differentiation is performed through the process of short-cutting, whereby certain groups of plural, related data components are short-cutted to a surrogate single data component.
- 26. The process of claim 23, wherein each data component has the characteristic elementality which permits no further relevant subdivision that will enhance the capability for problem and/or situation assessment differentiation.
- 27. A computer-based knowledge system designed for providing problem and situation assessments in a defined field of knowledge comprising
data-component library structure containing an inferential database including
(a) data components, each of which takes the form of a specific value that describes an aspect of a problem or a situation relevant to the defined field of knowledge, and (b) groups of such data components, referred to as result keys, which represent an assessment result having an assigned degree of certainty, a knowledge engine having access to said library structure, and possessing the capability to use such data components as the foundation for performing an assessment regarding a problem and/or situation relating to the define knowledge field, and a usage analyzer operatively connected both to said library structure and to said knowledge engine, controllable by said engine to perform statistical analysis with regard to data output by the engine, and for the purpose of adaptively enhancing system assessment capability by improving the certainty characteristics of result keys resident in said library structure.
