Claims
- 1. A panel interior to a side cover of a computer chassis operable to support a cooling fan comprising:a recessed portion distended away from the side cover to enable airflow between the side cover and said panel; and a receptacle in said recessed portion adapted to selectively accept one of a cooling fan and a receptacle cover.
- 2. The panel of claim 1 wherein said panel is detachable from the chassis.
- 3. The panel of claim 1 wherein said panel is rotatably coupled to the chassis.
- 4. The panel of claim 3 wherein said panel is rotatably coupled through a hinge along a first edge of said panel.
- 5. The panel of claim 4 further comprising a lock mechanism for securing a second edge of said panel relative to the computer chassis, the long dimension of the second edge of said panel being substantially perpendicular to the axis of the hinge.
- 6. The panel of claim 1 wherein said recessed portion is adjacent to a processing unit.
- 7. The panel of claim 1 wherein said recessed portion is adjacent to an expansion board area of a computer system.
- 8. The panel of claim 7 wherein the recessed portion is adjacent to peripheral component interconnect (PCI) expansion boards.
- 9. The panel of claim 1 further comprising a securing mechanism for releasably coupling a cooling fan or a receptacle cover in said receptacle.
- 10. The panel of claim 9 wherein the securing mechanism includes a tab extending away from said panel for capturing a portion of the fan or the receptacle cover.
- 11. The panel of claim 9 wherein the securing mechanism includes a barb for capturing a portion of the fan or the receptacle cover.
- 12. The panel of claim 1 further comprising a cooling fan support for holding a second fan wherein a first fan is supported adjacent to a processing unit and the second fan is supported adjacent to an expansion board area.
- 13. The panel of claim 1 further comprising a cooling fan support for holding a second fan wherein a first fan is supported adjacent to an expansion board area and the second fan is supported adjacent to a processing unit.
- 14. The panel of claim 1, further comprising a second receptacle adapted to selectively accept one of a cooling fan and receptacle cover.
- 15. A computer system comprising:a computer chassis; a motherboard including at least two sockets, said motherboard being coupled to said computer chassis; a power supply coupled to said computer chassis and electrically connected to said motherboard; a memory module coupled to said motherboard; a processing unit coupled to said motherboard through one of the sockets of the motherboard; an expansion board coupled to said motherboard through one of the sockets of the motherboard; a panel coupled to said computer chassis interior to a side cover of said computer chassis, said panel comprising: a recessed portion distended away from the side cover to enable airflow between the side cover and said panel; and a receptacle in said recessed portion adapted to selectively accept one of a cooling fan and a receptacle cover.
- 16. The panel of claim 15 wherein said panel is detachable from the chassis.
- 17. The panel of claim 15 wherein said panel is rotatably coupled to the chassis.
- 18. The panel of claim 17 wherein said panel is rotatably coupled through a hinge along a first edge of said panel.
- 19. The panel of claim 18 further comprising a lock mechanism for securing a second edge of said panel relative to the computer chassis, the long dimension of the second edge of said panel being substantially perpendicular to the axis of the hinge.
- 20. The panel of claim 15 wherein the recessed portion is adjacent to said processing unit.
- 21. The panel of claim 15 wherein the recessed portion is adjacent to said expansion board.
- 22. The panel of claim 21 wherein the expansion board is a peripheral component interconnect (PCI) expansion board.
- 23. The panel of claim 22 wherein the securing mechanism includes a tab extending away from said panel for capturing a portion of the fan or the receptacle cover.
- 24. The panel of claim 15 further comprising a securing mechanism for releasably coupling a cooling fan or a receptacle cover in said receptacle.
- 25. The panel of claim 24 wherein the securing mechanism includes a barb for capturing a portion of the fan or the receptacle cover.
- 26. The computer system of claim 19, wherein the panel further comprises a second receptacle adapted to selectively accept one of a cooling fan and a receptacle cover.
- 27. A cooling system for a computer comprising:a computer chassis; a first air movement means coupled to said chassis for directly moving air over components within the computer to cool the components; and a second air movement means coupled to said chassis for controlling movement of air into and out of the computer.
- 28. A method of cooling components of a computer system comprising the acts of:drawing air into the computer system with a chassis fan; providing a panel having a receptacle; selectively mounting a fan in the receptacle in a first arrangement; selectively mounting a cover in the receptacle in a second arrangement; and moving the air drawn into the computer system over a component by moving air through the panel that is between the component and a side wall of the computer system if the first arrangement is used and the panel fan is mounted in the receptacle.
- 29. The method of claim 28 wherein moving air through the panel includes pushing air toward the component with a fan.
- 30. The method of claim 28 wherein moving air through the panel includes pulling air past the component with a fan.
- 31. The method of claim 28 wherein the act of moving air over a component includes moving air over a processing unit.
- 32. The method of claim 28 wherein the act of moving air over a component includes moving air over an expansion board.
- 33. The method of claim 28, wherein providing the panel comprises arranging a second receptacle in the panel, the method further comprising mounting the cooling fan in the first receptacle and mounting the cover in the second receptacle.
- 34. A cooling system for a computer comprising:a panel fan; a panel operable to locate said panel fan adjacent to a component of the computer when said panel is in a closed position and operable to locate said panel fan exterior to the computer when said panel is in an open position; and a chassis fan coupled to an exterior wall of the computer for cooperatively operating with said panel fan for cooling the computer, wherein the panel is adapted to hingedly attach to the computer to enable the panel to be rotated to the open and closed positions.
- 35. The cooling system of claim 34 wherein said chassis fan cooperates with said panel fan to remove air from the computer that has been moved by said panel fan.
- 36. The cooling system of claim 34 wherein said chassis fan cooperates with said panel fan to supply air to said panel fan, the air for moving by said panel fan to cool the component.
- 37. A computer system comprising:a chassis; a panel coupled to the chassis; a cooling fan; and a cover; the panel having a first receptacle and a second receptacle, the first receptacle adapted to selectively receive one of the cooling fan and cover, and the second receptacle adapted to selectively receive the other one of the cooling fan and the cover.
