Claims
- 1. A computer comprising:
a protective case; a backplane disposed inside said protective case; a system microprocessor coupled to said backplane; a plurality of expansion slots, each coupled to the backplane and an expansion bus which is operated under the supervision of the system microprocessor, each of the expansion slots having a connector for receiving an expansion card; said backplane coupled to alarm circuitry for monitoring environmental conditions inside said case, said alarm circuitry including a bus transceiver processor for transmitting and receiving second bus signals over a second bus without direct supervision of the system microprocessor; said second bus including a two wire local operating network connection which is polarity insensitive.
- 2. A computer of claim 1 wherein said plurality of expansion slots are configured for receiving an ISA card.
- 3. A computer of claim 1 wherein said plurality of expansion slots are configured for receiving a PCI card.
- 4. A computer of claim 1 wherein said system microprocessor is resident upon said backplane and directly coupled thereto.
- 5. A computer of claim 1 wherein said system processor is disposed on a motherboard and thereby indirectly coupled to said backplane.
- 6. A computer of claim 1 wherein said second bus signals are organized in a predetermined fashion which include data structures for accomplishing end-to-end acknowledgment and data structure for detecting collisions of data packets transmitted over said second bus.
- 7. A computer of claim 5 wherein said second bus signals are organized in a predetermined fashion which include data structures for accomplishing end-to-end acknowledgment and data structure for detecting collisions of data packets transmitted over said second bus.
- 8. A computer of claim 7 wherein said second signals include data structures therein for providing network management services for installation and configuration of nodes on said second bus and for downloading of software over said second bus for use in connection with said alarm circuitry.
- 9. A computer comprising:
a processor; means for coupling said processor with a plurality of expansion slots for receiving expansion cards therein. means for communicating information relating to temperature of said processor to remote locations, which means for communicating is not under the direct supervision of said processor and further said means for communicating using a two wire local operating network which has polarity insensitivity.
- 10. A computer of claim 9 wherein said means for coupling said processor with a plurality of expansion slots includes a backplane.
- 11. A computer of claim 10 wherein said backplane has an expansion bus thereon for coupling with said plurality of expansion slots.
- 12. A computer of claim 11 wherein said backplane is an active backplane having said processor resident thereon.
- 13. A computer of claim 11 wherein said backplane is a passive backplane and said processor is disposed on a motherboard which is detachably coupled with said backplane.
- 14. A computer of claim 13 wherein said means for communicating utilizes an organization of data structures which provide for end-to-end acknowledgment of data packets transmitted between said processor and said remote locations.
- 15. A computer of claim 14 wherein said means for communicating further includes data structures for providing network management services for installation and configuration of nodes and for enabling downloading of software from remote locations to said processor.
- 16. A computer of claim 15 further comprising fans for enhancing airflow around said processor wherein said fans provide information relating to operating speeds of said fan, and said means for communicating information relating to temperature further communicating information relating to fan speeds.
- 17. A method of monitoring a computer comprising the steps of:
measuring a temperature characteristic of a predetermined position in a computer, and generating a temperature measurement signal in response thereto; measuring a speed of operation of a cooling fan in said computer and generating a fan speed signal in response thereto; providing a system processor for supervising various functions of said computer; communicating said temperature measurement signal and said fan speed signal over a local operating network having a two wire polarity insensitive network connection, wherein said system processor does not directly supervise information on said local operating network.
