- 7. The method of claim 1 further comprising comparing the information provided in the vehicle identifying information and the first paint color data with the vehicle identifying information and paint color data in the database by weighting the vehicle identifying information and paint color data based on the closeness of the vehicle identifying information of the vehicle and the vehicle identifying information in the database.
- 8. The method of claim 7 wherein said comparing step includes determining the closeness of the color match such that a color match in excess of a predetermined tolerance level is adjusted by interpolating or extrapolating a paint formulation based upon other matches.
- 9. The method of claim 1 further comprising calculating any difference between the second paint color data and the first paint color data and evaluating trends within a production series of vehicles by identifying differences between paint formulations in the production series, and altering the best match paint formulations based on differences between color formulations in the production series to provide closer subsequent paint color matches.
- 10. The method of claim 1 wherein the database is stored on a computer and step (b) is performed by software on the computer.
- 11. The method of claim 10 where steps (e) and (f) are performed by software on the computer.
- 12. The method of claim 1 wherein the vehicle identifying information for the vehicle is scanned from the vehicle.
- 13. The method of claim 10 wherein the vehicle identifying information includes a production sequence number and further comprising determining whether the production sequence number in the vehicle identifying information of the vehicle to be painted is close to a production sequence number stored in the database related to a paint formulation such that the paint formulation for the stored production sequence number matches the paint color of the vehicle to be painted.
- 14. A system for matching paint on a vehicle comprising:
an input device of a computer configured to receive vehicle identifying information for a vehicle and paint color data for the vehicle; a database of paint formulations related to vehicle identifying information and paint color data; and computer software for performing (i) a first process of identifying a best match paint formulation in the database based on the vehicle identifying information for the vehicle and a first paint color data for the vehicle received in the input device and (ii) a second process of comparing a first paint color data to paint color data for the vehicle painted with the best match paint formulation received in the input device and optionally updating the database based on the comparison.
- 15. The system of claim 14 wherein the vehicle identifying information comprises a vehicle identification number (VIN).
- 16. The system of claim 14 wherein the paint color data comprises paint reflectance data.
- 17. The system of claim 16 wherein the paint color data further comprises paint color codes.
- 18. The system of claim 16 further comprising a paint reflectance scanner for determining the paint color data of the vehicle for receipt in the input port.
- 19. The system of claim 16 further comprising a remote terminal for recording the vehicle identifying information for the vehicle and the paint color data for the vehicle and transmitting the vehicle identifying information for the vehicle and the paint color data for the vehicle to the computer input device.
- 20. The system of claim 19 wherein said remote terminal further comprises an input device for receiving the best match paint formulation.
- 21. A method for determining a paint formulation that matches the color of paint of a vehicle comprising the steps of:
(a) receiving vehicle identifying information for a vehicle and paint color data for the vehicle comprising reflectance data for the paint of the vehicle; and (b) identifying a best match paint formulation in a database of paint formulations related to vehicle identifying information and paint color data based on the vehicle identifying information for the vehicle and the received the paint color data for the vehicle.
- 22. The method of claim 21 wherein the vehicle identifying information comprises a vehicle identification number (VIN).
- 23. The method of claim 21 wherein the paint color data further comprises a color code for the paint of the vehicle.
- 24. The method of claim 21 further comprising interpolating or extrapolating a paint formulation based upon paint formulations relating to vehicle identifying information for vehicles in a production series of the vehicle.
- 25. The method of claim 21 further comprising comparing the information provided in the vehicle identifying information and the paint color data with the vehicle identifying information and paint color data in the database by weighting the vehicle identifying information and paint color data based on the closeness of the vehicle identifying information of the vehicle and the vehicle identifying information in the database.
- 26. The method of claim 25 wherein said comparing step includes determining the closeness of the color match such that a color match in excess of a predetermined tolerance level is adjusted by interpolating or extrapolating a paint formulation based upon other matches.
