Claims
- 1.-17. (canceled).
- 18. A locking method for a portable electronic device, comprising:
inserting a locking member that is part of an attachment mechanism into a generally rectangular security slot, having dimensions of about 3 mm×7 mm, defined in a wall of the portable electronic device; securing said attachment mechanism to the portable electronic device via the rectangular security slot, having dimensions of about 3 mm×7 mm, and using the locking member; and maintaining a locked configuration using the attachment mechanism; wherein the portable electronic device is localized with respect to an object other than the portable electronic device.
- 19. The locking method of claim 18 wherein said locking member rotates to a locked position
- 20. The locking method of claim 18 wherein the locked configuration is maintained by use of a pin proximate said locking member, and wherein said pin extends into said security slot after said locking member has moved to a locked position.
- 21. The locking method of claim 18 further comprising associating a cable, coupled to said locking member, to said object.
- 22. The locking method of claim 18 further comprising inserting a pin into said security slot before said locking member moves to a locked position.
- 23. The locking method of claim 18 wherein the attachment mechanism includes a cylindrical housing around at least part of the locking member.
- 24. The locking method of claim 18 wherein the portable electronic device is a computer.
- 25. The locking method of claim 18 wherein the locking member is part of a security device, and wherein the security device includes a cable.
- 26. The locking method of claim 18 wherein the attachment mechanism part of a security device, and wherein the security device includes a cable, and wherein the method further includes:
wrapping the cable around the object so that the portable electronic device is localized with respect to the object.
- 27. The locking method of claim 18 wherein the locking member includes a T-bar.
- 28. The locking method of claim 18 wherein the attachment mechanism includes a pin.
- 29. The locking method of claim 28 wherein the locking member is part of a security devices and wherein the security device includes a cable.
- 30. An apparatus for inhibiting theft of a portable electronic device having an external wall with a thickness, wherein the wall has a security slot, the apparatus comprising:
an attachment mechanism comprising a slot engagement member, wherein the slot engagement member is capable of insertion into the security slot in the wall of the portable electronic device and is capable of being movable between a locked position and an unlocked position, and a pin structure capable of extending into the security slot; and a cable coupled to the attachment mechanism.
- 31. The apparatus of claim 30 wherein the security slot has dimensions of about 3 by about 7 millimeters.
- 32. The apparatus of claim 30 wherein the slot engagement member comprises a shaft and a crossmember at an end of the shaft.
- 33. The apparatus of claim 30 wherein slot engagement member rotates between the locked position and the unlocked position.
- 34. The apparatus of claim 30 further comprising a cylindrical housing, wherein the slot engagement member and the pin are at least partially enclosed in the cylindrical housing.
- 35. The apparatus of claim 30 further wherein the attachment mechanism comprises a key-actuated lock mechanism.
- 36. The apparatus of claim 30 further comprising a housing and a spring, wherein the spring, the slot engagement member, and the pin are at least partially enclosed in the housing.
- 37. The apparatus of claim 30 wherein the security slot has dimensions of about 3 by about 7 millimeters and wherein the slot engagement member has dimensions smaller than about 3 by about 7 millimeters
- 38. The apparatus of claim 30 wherein the slot engagement member has-a shaft that is longer than the thickness of the wall.
- 39. A locking system comprising:
a portable electronic device having an external wall with a thickness, wherein the wall has a security slot; a locking apparatus comprising an attachment mechanism comprising
a slot engagement member, wherein the slot engagement member is capable of insertion into the security slot in the wall of the portable electronic device, and a cable coupled to the attachment mechanism; and an immovable object, wherein the locking apparatus couples the portable electronic device and the immovable object together.
- 40. The system of claim 39 wherein the security slot has dimensions of about 3 by about 7 millimeters.
- 41. The system of claim 39 wherein the slot engagement member comprises a shaft and a crossmember at an end of the shaft.
- 42. The system of claim 39 wherein slot engagement member rotates between a locked position and an unlocked position.
- 43. The system of claim 39 wherein the attachment mechanism further comprises a pin and a cylindrical housing, wherein the slot engagement member and the pin are at least partially enclosed in the cylindrical housing.
- 44. The system of claim 39 further wherein the attachment mechanism comprises a key-actuated lock mechanism.
- 45. The system of claim 39 wherein the attachment mechanism further comprises a pin, a housing and a spring, wherein the spring, the slot engagement member, and the pin are at least partially enclosed in the housing.
- 46. The system of claim 39 wherein the security slot has dimensions of about 3 by about 7 millimeters and wherein the slot engagement member has dimensions smaller than about 3 by about 7 millimeters.
- 47. The system of claim 39 wherein the slot engagement member has a shaft that is longer than the thickness of the wall.
- 48. The system of claim 39 wherein the attachment mechanism comprises a pin adjacent to the slot engagement member.
- 49. An apparatus for inhibiting theft of a portable electronic device having an external wall with a thickness, wherein the wall has a security slot that has dimensions of about 3 millimeters by about 7 millimeters, the apparatus comprising:
an attachment mechanism comprising
a slot engagement member, wherein the slot engagement member is capable of insertion into the security slot in the wall of the portable electronic device and is capable of engaging the slot; and a cable coupled to the attachment mechanism.
- 50. The apparatus of claim 49 wherein the slot engagement member comprises a shaft and a crossmember at an end of the shaft.
- 51. The apparatus of claim 49 wherein slot engagement member rotates between a locked position and an unlocked position.
- 52. The apparatus of claim 49 further comprising a pin, and a cylindrical housing, wherein the slot engagement member and the pin are at least partially enclosed in the cylindrical housing.
- 53. The apparatus of claim 49 further wherein the attachment mechanism comprises a key-actuated lock mechanism.
- 54. The apparatus of claim 49 further comprising a pin, a housing and a spring, wherein the spring, the slot engagement member, and the pin are at least partially enclosed in the housing.
- 55. The apparatus of claim 49 wherein the slot engagement member has dimensions smaller than about 3 by about 7 millimeters.
- 56. The apparatus of claim 30 wherein the slot engagement member has a shaft that is longer than the thickness of the wall.
- 57. A locking system comprising:
a portable electronic device having an external wall with a thickness, wherein the wall has a security slot; an attachment mechanism comprising
a slot engagement member comprising two engagement portions comprising inwardly sloped sidewalls, wherein the slot engagement member is capable of insertion into the security slot in the wall of the portable electronic device and is capable of being secured to the portable electronic device via the security slot; and a cable coupled to the attachment mechanism.
- 58. The locking system of claim 57 wherein the security slot has dimensions of about 3 by about 7 millimeters.
- 59. The locking system of claim 57 wherein the two engagement portions are adapted to move outwardly to engage edges of the slot.
- 60. The locking system of claim 57 wherein the two engagement portions include distal ends that extend away from each other.
- 61. The locking system of claim 57 further comprising:
an immovable object coupled to the cable.
- 62. The locking system of claim 59 wherein the security slot has dimensions of about 3 by about 7 millimeters.
- 63. The locking system of claim 60 wherein the security slot has dimensions of about 3 by about 7 millimeters.
