Claims
- 1. A computer pointing device, comprising:
- a position translating unit, alternately operable in a first operating mode and a second operating mode responsive to a configuration datum; and
- a memory for storing said configuration datum, wherein said memory is responsive to a configuration signal received from an associated computer, said configuration signal comprising said configuration datum.
- 2. A computer pointing device, comprising:
- a position translating unit, alternately operable in a first operating mode and a second operating mode responsive to a configuration datum; and
- a memory, coupled to said position translating unit, for storing said configuration datum to indicate a particular one of said first and second operating modes for operation of said position translating unit.
- 3. The computer pointing device of claim 2 wherein said memory is responsive to a configuration signal from an associated computer system, said configuration signal comprising said configuration datum.
- 4. The computer pointing device of claim 2 wherein said memory is a non-volatile memory.
- 5. A computer pointing device, comprising:
- a position translating unit, alternately operable in a first communication protocol and a second communication protocol responsive to a configuration bit; and
- a memory for storing said configuration bit, wherein said memory is responsive to a configuration signal from an associated computer system, said configuration signal comprising said configuration bit.
- 6. A computer pointing device, comprising:
- a position translating unit, alternately operable in a first communication protocol and a second communication protocol responsive to a configuration datum; and
- a memory, coupled to said position translating unit, for storing said configuration datum to indicate a particular one of said first and second communication protocols for operation of said position translating unit.
- 7. The computer pointing device of claim 5 wherein said memory is a non-volatile memory.
- 8. The computer pointing device of claim 5 wherein said memory is responsive to a configuration signal from an associated computer system, said configuration signal comprising said configuration datum.
- 9. In a computer pointing device alternately operable in a first communications protocol and a second communications protocol, a method for setting the computer pointing device to operate in a particular one of said first and second communication protocols comprising the steps of:
- (a) transmitting, from an associated computer system to the computer pointing device, a configuration datum specifying a particular one of said first and second communication protocols for operation of said computer pointing device; and
- (b) storing said configuration datum in a memory within said computer pointing device.
- 10. A LED encoder illumination control system for a computer pointing device, comprising:
- an LED encoder, alternately operable at a first intensity level and at a second intensity level responsive to a configuration datum; and
- a memory for storing said configuration datum, wherein said memory is responsive to a configuration signal received from an associated computer, said configuration signal comprising said configuration datum.
- 11. A LED encoder illumination control system for a computer pointing device, comprising:
- an LED encoder, alternately operable at a first intensity level and at a second intensity level responsive to a configuration datum;
- a memory for storing said configuration datum to indicate a particular one of said first and second intensity levels for operation of said LED encoder; and
- wherein said second intensity level is different than said first intensity level.
- 12. The LED encoder illumination control system of claim 10 wherein said memory is responsive to a configuration signal from an associated computer system, said configuration signal comprising said configuration datum.
- 13. The LED encoder illumination control system of claim 22, wherein said LED encoder further comprises:
- an LED responsive to a first current level to generate light at a first intensity level, and responsive to a second current level to generate light at a second intensity level; and
- a current source, coupled to said memory and said LED, for alternately generating said first current level and said second current level responsive to said illumination control data.
- 14. The LED encoder illumination control system of claim 10, wherein said LED encoder further comprises:
- an LED responsive to a first current level to generate a light at a first intensity level, and responsive to a second current level to generate light at a second intensity level; and
- a current source, coupled to said memory and said LED, for alternately generating said first current level and said second current level responsive to said illumination control data.
- 15. In a computer pointing device having a LED encoder that is alternately operable at a first intensity level and a second intensity level, a method for setting the intensity level of the LED encoder comprising the steps of:
- (a) transmitting, from an associated computer system to the computer pointing device, a configuration datum specifying a particular one of said first and second intensity levels for operation of said LED encoder; and
- (b) storing said configuration datum in a memory within said computer pointing device.
