Claims
- 1. A computer system comprising:
- a CPU having,
- a first operating mode using a first address calculation form and capable of accessing a predetermined memory space,
- a second operating mode using a second address calculation form different from the first address calculation form and capable of accessing a memory space larger than that in the first operating mode, and
- a system management mode using an address calculation form substantially identical to the first address calculation form and capable of executing a predetermined system management program,
- said CPU being operated such that,
- in response to supply of a System Management Interrupt (SMI) signal generated by the execution of an IN or OUT instruction for a specific I/O port to said CPU, CPU status data is saved in a memory, and a current CPU operating mode is switched to the system management mode, and
- in response to execution of a resume instruction in the system management mode, contents of said memory are restored in a CPU register, and the operating mode set before the SMI signal is supplied is resumed from the system management mode;
- an interrupt signal generator, connected to said CPU through a system bus, for trapping an I/O address on said system bus which belongs to an address range designated by a predetermined I/O base address, thereby generating the SMI signal; and
- an interface means for interfacing one of an operating system and an application program, configured to be operated in the second operating mode and a predetermined function execution routine of a BIOS driver configured to be operated in the first operating mode;
- wherein:
- said interface means comprises,
- means for, in response to a call request for the predetermined function execution routine from said one of an operating system and application program executed by said CPU in the second operating mode, executing an I/O instruction to said I/O port belonging to the address range designated by the I/O base address to cause said interrupt signal generator to generate the SMI signal,
- means for, when said CPU is switched to the system management mode in accordance with the SMI signal, executing the system management program to call the predetermined function execution routine and causing said CPU in the system management mode to execute the predetermined function execution routine, and
- means for executing a resume instruction in response to execution completion of the predetermined function execution routine so as to change the system management mode of said CPU to the second operating mode in which said one of an operating system and application program was being executed; and
- said interface means calls one function execution routine designated by a function code set in a CPU register by said one of an operating system and application program and selected from a plurality of function execution routines included in the BIOS driver, and causes said CPU in the system management mode to execute the called function execution routine.
- 2. A system according to claim 1, wherein said interrupt signal generator includes:
- a register connected to said CPU through said system bus and set with a predetermined I/O base address; and
- a comparator for receiving the I/O address output on said system bus, comparing the I/O address with the I/O base address in said register, and generating an SMI signal when the I/O address belongs to an address range designated by the I/O base address.
- 3. The computer system according to claim 1, wherein said interface means includes first interface means for executing the system management program to start the first program and second interface means for starting said first interface means in response to a request from the second program,
- said second interface means includes means for, in response to a call request for the first program from the second program executed by said CPU in the second operating mode, executing an I/O instruction to said I/O port belonging to the address range designated by the I/O base address to cause said interrupt signal generator to generate the SMI signal, and
- said first interface means includes means for, when said CPU is switched to the system management mode in accordance with the SMI signal, executing the system management program to call the first program and causing said CPU in the system management mode to execute the first program, and means for executing a resume instruction in response to execution completion of the first program so as to change the system management mode of said CPU to the second operating mode in which the second program was being executed.
- 4. A system according to claim 3, wherein said second interface means further includes means for setting, in a predetermined register of said CPU, a function code for designating one of a plurality of function execution routines included in the first program in response to a request from the second program, and
- said first interface means calls the function execution routine designated by the function code set in said predetermined register of said CPU to cause said CPU in the system management mode to execute the function execution routine.
- 5. A system according to claim 3, wherein the second program is an operating system, and the first program is a BIOS program for controlling hardware of said system.
- 6. A system according to claim 4, wherein the function execution routine includes a routine for checking whether said first and second interface means are supported in said computer system, a routine for reading currently set system configuration data from a memory in which a system configuration of said computer system is stored, a routine for writing the system configuration data in said memory, a routine for writing a default value of the system configuration data in said memory, a routine for reading data from a designated index in said memory, and a routine for writing data in the designated index in said memory.
- 7. A computer system comprising:
- a main memory for storing an operating system and various target application programs;
- a program memory for storing BIOS and system management programs for hardware control;
- an overlay memory for storing an instruction for calling the system management program, said overlay memory being mapped in part of an address space of said main memory;
- a CPU having a first operating mode using a first address calculation form and capable of accessing a predetermined memory space, a second operating mode using a second address calculation form different from the first address calculation form and capable of accessing a memory space larger than that in the first operating mode, and a system management mode using an address calculation form substantially identical to the first address calculation form and capable of permitting access to said overlay memory and executing an instruction of said overlay memory, said CPU being operated such that after CPU status data is saved in said overlay memory in response to supply of a System Management Interrupt (SMI) signal generated by the execution of an IN or OUT instruction for a specific I/O port to said CPU, a current CPU operating mode is switched to the system management mode, contents of said overlay memory are restored in a CPU register in response to execution of a resume instruction in the system management mode, and the operating mode set before the SMI signal is supplied is resumed from the system management mode;
- an interrupt signal generator, connected to said CPU through a system bus, for trapping an I/O address on said system bus which belongs to an address range designated by a predetermined I/O base address, thereby generating the SMI signal; and
- an interface means for interfacing one of an operating system and application program configured to be operated in the second operating mode and the BIOS program configured to be operated in the first operating mode, said interface means further comprising means for, in response to a call request for the BIOS program from said one of an operating system and application program executed by said CPU in the second operating mode, executing an I/O instruction to said I/O port belonging to the address range designated by the I/O base address to cause said interrupt signal generator to generate the SMI signal, said interface means including,
- first interface means for executing the system management program to start a first program and second interface means for starting said first interface means in response to a request from a second program,
- said second interface means includes means for, in response to a call request for the first program from the second program executed by said CPU in the second operating mode, executing an I/O instruction to said I/O port belonging to the address range designated by the I/O base address to cause said interrupt signal generator to generate the SMI signal,
- means for setting, in a predetermined register of said CPU, a function code for designating one of a plurality of function execution routines included in the first program in response to a request from the second program,
- said first interface means includes means for, when said CPU is switched to the system management mode in accordance with the SMI signal, executing the system management program to call the first program and causing said CPU in the system management mode to execute the first program, and means for executing a resume instruction in response to execution completion of the first program so as to change the system management mode of said CPU to the second operating mode in which the second program was being executed, and
- said first interface means calling the function execution routine designated by the function code set in said predetermined register of said CPU to cause said CPU in the system management mode to execute the function execution routine;
- means for, when said CPU is switched to the system management mode in accordance with the interrupt signal, executing the system management program to call the BIOS program and causing said CPU in the system management mode to execute the BIOS program; and
- means for executing a resume instruction in response to execution completion of the BIOS program so as to change the system management mode of said CPU to the second operating mode in which the operating system or application program was being executed.
- 8. A computer system comprising:
- a CPU having,
- a first operating mode using a first address calculation form and capable of accessing a predetermined memory space,
- a second operating mode using a second address calculation form different from the first address calculation form and capable of accessing a memory space larger than that in the first operating mode, and
- a system management mode using an address calculation form substantially identical to the first address calculation form and capable of executing a predetermined system management program,
- said CPU being operated such that,
- in response to supply of a System Management Interrupt (SMI) signal generated by the execution of an IN or OUT instruction for a specific I/O port to said CPU, CPU status data is saved in a memory, and a current CPU operating mode is switched to the system management mode, and
- in response to execution of a resume instruction in the system management mode, contents of said memory are restored in a CPU register, and the operating mode set before the SMI signal is supplied is resumed from the system management mode;
- an interrupt signal generator, connected to said CPU through a system bus, for trapping an I/O address on said system bus which belongs to an address range designated by a predetermined I/O base address, thereby generating the SMI signal; and
- an interface means for interfacing one of an operating system and an application program configured to be operated in the second operating mode and a plurality of function execution routines of a basic input and output operating system (BIOS), configured to be operated in the first operating mode, for performing hardware control, said interface means including,
- means for executing an I/O instruction for said I/O port belonging to the address range designated by the I/O base address in response to a call request for the function execution routine from the operating system or application program executed by said CPU in the second operating mode, and causing said interrupt signal generator to generate the SMI signal,
- means for, when said CPU is switched to the system management mode in accordance with the interrupt signal, executing the system management program to restore, in a predetermined register of said CPU, CPU status data stored in said memory prior to generation of the interrupt signal, means for reading the function code, set by the operating system or application program prior to generation of the interrupt signal, from said predetermined register of said CPU in response to a resume operation, calling the function execution routine of the BIOS designated by the function code, and causing said CPU in the system management mode to execute the function execution routine of the BIOS,
- means for saving the CPU status data in said memory in response to execution completion of the function execution routine of the BIOS, and
- means for causing said CPU to resume the second operating mode, in which the operating system or application program was executed, from the system management mode in response to a save operation, and transferring output data obtained in the function execution routine of the BIOS to said one of an operating system and application program through said predetermined register of said CPU.
- 9. A system according to claim 8, wherein the function execution routine includes a routine for checking whether said interface means is supported in said computer system, a routine for reading currently set system configuration data from a memory in which a system configuration of said computer system is stored, a routine for writing the system configuration data in said memory, a routine for writing a default value of the system configuration data in said memory, a routine for reading data from a designated index in said memory, and a routine for writing data in the designated index in said memory.
- 10. A system according to claim 8, wherein the application program is a battery power management program which includes one of a current battery charge amount display, a residual battery capacity display, a battery save mode setting, a resume mode setting, a speaker volume setting, a battery capacity setting, and a combination thereof.
- 11. A system according to claim 8, wherein the system configuration data is one of a processing speed setting of said CPU, a resume mode setting, an inverse gray scale setting, a card modem power enable/disable setting, an alarm power on disable setting, a hard disk drive (HDD) auto off setting, a display auto off setting, a system auto off setting, a sleep mode setting, an LCD brightness setting, a battery save mode setting, and a combination thereof.
- 12. A system according to claim 8, wherein said I/O port is an unused I/O port to which an input/output device is not assigned.
- 13. In a computer system including a CPU having a first operating mode using a first address calculation form and capable of accessing a predetermined memory space, a second operating mode using a second address calculation form different from the first address calculation form and capable of accessing a memory space larger than that in the first operating mode, and a system management mode using an address calculation form substantially identical to the first address calculation form and capable of executing a predetermined system management program, said CPU being operated such that after CPU status data is saved in a memory in response to supply of a System Management Interrupt (SMI) signal generated by the execution of an IN or OUT instruction for a specific I/O port to said CPU, a current CPU operating mode is switched to the system management mode, contents of said memory are restored in a CPU register in response to execution of a resume instruction in the system management mode, and the operating mode set before the SMI signal is supplied is resumed from the system management mode, and an interrupt signal generator, connected to said CPU through a system bus, for trapping an I/O address on said system bus which belongs to an address range designated by a predetermined I/O base address, thereby generating the SMI signal, an interfacing method of interfacing one of an operating system and application program configured to be operated in the second operating mode and a predetermined function execution routine of a basic input and output system (BIOS) driver configured to be operated in the first operating mode, comprising the steps of:
- executing an I/O instruction, in response to a call request for the predetermined function execution routine of a BIOS from said one of an operating system and application program executed by said CPU in the second operating mode, to said I/O port belonging to the address range designated by the I/O base address to cause said interrupt signal generator to generate the SMI signal;
- executing the system management program, when said CPU is switched to the system management mode in accordance with the SMI signal to call the predetermined function execution routine of a BIOS designated by a function code set in a CPU register by said one of an operating system and application program and selected from a plurality of function execution routines included in the BIOS program, and causing said CPU in the system management mode to execute the called function execution routine; and
- executing a resume instruction in response to execution completion of the predetermined function execution routine of a BIOS so as to change the system management mode of said CPU to the second operating mode in which said one of an operating system and application program was being executed.
- 14. In a computer system having a CPU having a first operating mode using a first address calculation form and capable of accessing a predetermined memory space, a second operating mode using a second address calculation form different from the first address calculation form and capable of accessing a memory space larger than that in the first operating mode, and a system management mode using an address calculation form substantially identical to the first address calculation form and capable of executing a predetermined system management program, said CPU being operated such that after CPU status data is saved in a memory in response to supply of a System Management Interrupt (SMI) signal generated by the execution of an IN or OUT instruction for a specific I/O port to said CPU, a current CPU operating mode is switched to the system management mode, contents of said memory are restored in a CPU register in response to execution of a resume instruction in the system management mode, and the operating mode set before the SMI signal is supplied is resumed from the system management mode, and an interrupt signal generator, connected to said CPU through a system bus, for trapping an I/O address on said system bus which belongs to an address range designated by a predetermined I/O base address, thereby generating the SMI signal, an interfacing method of interfacing one of an operating system and application program configured to be operated in the second operating mode and a plurality of function execution routines of a basic input and output operating system (BIOS), configured to be operated to be in the first operating mode, for performing hardware control, comprising the steps of:
- executing an I/O instruction for said I/O port belonging to the address range designated by the I/O base address in response to a call request for one of said plurality of function execution routines from said one of an operating system and application program executed by said CPU in the second operating mode, and causing said interrupt signal generator to generate the SMI signal;
- executing the system management program, when said CPU is switched to the system management mode in accordance with the interrupt signal to restore, in a predetermined register of said CPU, CPU status data stored in said memory prior to generation of the SMI signal;
- reading the function code, set by said one of an operating system and application program prior to generation of the interrupt signal, from said predetermined register of said CPU in response to a resume operation, calling the function execution routine of a BIOS designated by the function code, and causing said CPU in the system management mode to execute the designated function execution routine of a BIOS;
- saving the CPU status data in said memory in response to execution completion of the designated function execution routine of a BIOS; and
- causing said CPU to resume the second operating mode, in which said one of an operating system and application program was executed, from the system management mode in response to a save operation, and transferring output data obtained by the function execution routine of a BIOS to said one of an operating system and application program through said predetermined register of said CPU.
- 15. A method according to claim 14, wherein the function execution routine is a system configuration read/write request.
- 16. A method according to claim 14, wherein the function execution routine is a battery power management program which includes one of a current battery charge amount display, a residual battery capacity display, a battery save mode setting, a resume mode setting, a speaker volume setting, a battery capacity setting, and a combination thereof.
- 17. A method according to claim 14, wherein the function execution routine is a read/write operation at a designated index of a memory in which the system configuration is stored.
- 18. A computer system, comprising:
- a central processing unit (CPU) having a protect mode capable of accessing a predetermined memory space and a system management mode (SMM) capable of executing a predetermined system management program, and for executing an operating system (OS) in a protect mode;
- an I/O trap System Management Interrupt (SMI) generator for trapping an I/O address generated by execution of an "IN" or "OUT" instruction, thereby generating an I/O trap SMI; and
- an interface means, including:
- means for setting, in a register of the CPU, a function code designating a predetermined function execution routine of a basic input and output system (BIOS) driver and for executing the "IN" instruction or "OUT" instruction in response to a call request of the BIOS from the OS to cause the I/O trap SMI generator to generate the I/O trap SMI, whereby the CPU is switched from the protect mode to the SMM;
- means for, when the CPU is switched to the SMM, saving CPU status data of CPU registers in a system management memory (SMRAM), for setting, in CPU registers, contents of CPU status data saved in the SMRAM by the CPU upon generation of previous SMI and for calling one function execution routine designated by a function code set in the register, and causes the CPU in the SMM to execute the called function execution routine; and
- means for executing a resume instruction in response to execution completion of the called function execution routine so as to change the SMM of the CPU to the protect mode in which the OS was being executed.
