Claims
- 1. A docking station for a portable computer, comprising:a platform having a first surface upon which an undersurface of the portable computer rests while docked at the docking station; a docking connector extending through the first surface while the computer is docked, the docking connector serving as an electrical interface with the portable computer; and a lever which is moved to actuate docking; wherein the lever rotates the docking connector from a first position to a second position, and wherein the first surface incorporates a hook located at the first surface, the hook serving to urge the portable computer toward the docking connector and causing the docking connector to extend to the portable computer in the second position for mating to the docking connector of the portable computer.
- 2. The docking station of claim 1, further comprising a locking mechanism for locking the lever to prevent either one or both of docking and undocking.
- 3. A docking station and portable computer combination, the portable computer having an undersurface upon which the portable computer rests, the portable computer having a first opening at the undersurface, the portable computer including a first docking connector located within the first opening and a guide structure; the docking station comprising: a docking platform having a first surface upon which the portable computer undersurface rests while docked at the docking station, the docking platform having a hook located at the first surface, the hook serving to urge the portable computer toward the docking platform; a second docking connector extending through the first surface while the computer is docked, the docking connector serving as an electrical interface with the portable computer; and the combination further comprising: an expansion module which connects to the computer undersurface and the docking station, the expansion module having a first surface at which a third connector is accessible for electrically connecting to the first docking connector, the expansion module having a second surface at which a fourth connector is accessible for electrically connecting to the second docking connector, wherein the expansion module is sandwiched between the computer and the docking station.
- 4. A method for docking a portable computer to a docking station, in which the portable computer has an undersurface upon which the portable computer rests and a first opening at the undersurface, the portable computer including a first docking connector located within the first opening, the docking station including a platform having an upward surface for receiving the undersurface of the portable computer, a second docking connector protruding from the upward surface of the platform, the method comprising the steps of:moving the portable computer into a prescribed alignment position in which the first docking connector is vertically aligned with an engagement position of the second docking connector; moving a lever which serves to urge the portable computer toward the second docking connector by way of a hook which protrudes from the upward surface and causes the first docking connector to move toward the second docking connector and to mate the first docking connector with the second docking connector, the mated first docking connector and second docking connector forming an electrical interface between the portable computer and the docking station.
- 5. The method of claim 4, further comprising the step of locking the lever to prevent either one or both of docking or undocking of the portable computer.
- 6. The method of claim 4, further comprising the step of mating a portable computer alignment mechanism with a docking station alignment mechanism.
- 7. A method for docking a portable computer with an expansion module to a docking station, in which the portable computer has an undersurface upon which the portable computer rests and a first opening at the undersurface, the portable computer including a first docking connector located within the first opening, the expansion module having a first surface at which a second connector is accessible for electrically connecting to the first docking connector, the expansion module having a second surface at which a third connector is accessible, the docking station including a platform having an upward surface for receiving the expansion module second surface, a fourth connector protruding from the upward surface of the platform, wherein the first docking connector, the second connector, the third connector and the fourth connector are electrical connectors for forming electrical interfaces, the method comprising the steps of:connecting the expansion module to the portable computer at the portable computer undersurface by mating the first docking connector and the second connector, the expansion module first surface being adjacent to the portable computer undersurface; moving the portable computer with expansion module into a prescribed alignment position in which the third connector is vertically aligned with an engagement position of the fourth connector; and moving the fourth connector relative to the third connector to mate the fourth connector and third connector, the mated fourth connector and third connector and the mated second connector and first docking connector forming an electrical interface between the portable computer and the docking station; wherein the expansion module is sandwiched between the portable computer and the docking station while the portable computer with expansion module is docked to the docking station.
- 8. A method of docking a portable computer having a platform which includes a first surface upon which an undersurface of the portable computer rests while docked at the docking station, the portable computer also having a docking connector extending through the first surface while the computer is docked, the docking connector serving as an electrical interface with the portable computer, the portable computer also having a lever which is moved to actuate docking, wherein the lever rotates the docking connector from a first position to a second position, and wherein the docking connector extends to the computer in the second position for mating to a docking connector of the computer, the method comprising:moving the portable computer into a prescribed alignment position in which the first docking connector is vertically aligned with an engagement position of the docking connector of the docking station; moving the lever to move the docking connector of the docking station into the first docking connector to mate the first docking connector and docking connector of the docking station, the mated first docking connector and docking connector of the docking station forming an electrical interface between the portable computer and the docking station.
