Claims
- 1. A modular block suitable for use in constructing various types of structures that includes
- a plurality of axially-aligned motor vehicle-type tires;
- banding means for holding the tires together in an axially-compressed condition to create a compacted, annular-shaped bundle having a central opening passing therethrough; and
- concrete means completely encapsulating at least one compacted bundle and its banding means to establish a block having a predetermined shape and further having at least two flat parallel surfaces.
- 2. The modular block of claim 1 that includes a plurality of compacted bundles.
- 3. The modular block of claim 1, wherein the volume enclosed by said block is completely filled by said concrete means and said tires.
- 4. The modular block of claim 1 wherein said banding means includes a series of cables, each cable passing axially around the outer wall of the bundle and through the central opening formed therein.
- 5. The modular block of claim 1 that includes further lifting means to facilitate lifting and handling of said block.
- 6. The modular block of claim 5 wherein said lifting means is a central hole formed in the concrete means that passes axially into the compacted bundle.
- 7. The modular block of claim 5 wherein said lifting means is a tapered hole that passes through the compacted bundle and the block.
- 8. A method of preparing a building block that includes the steps of
- compacting an axially-aligned stack of tires into a highly-compressed bundle having a central opening passing therethrough;
- banding the tires in the compressed bundle together to hold them in a compressed condition;
- placing at least one compressed bundle in a mold; and
- completely encapsulating the compressed bundle with concrete to form a block having at least two flat, parallel surfaces.
- 9. The method of claim 8 that includes the further step of placing a core inside the compressed bundle prior to encapsulating the bundle to form a hole in said block.
- 10. The method of claim 8 wherein a plurality of compressed bundles are placed in said mold.
