Claims
- 1. A method of forming a concrete building block, comprising:
- providing bottom, side and end walls of a form;
- providing cavity forming projections and projection forming cavities;
- providing an elongated slug having first and second ends;
- supporting said walls to form a block forming cavity;
- supporting the cavity forming projections and the projection forming cavities at opposed locations across the block forming cavity;
- supporting the slug within the block forming cavity, to extend across the block forming cavity, with said first end of the slug adjacent the cavity forming projections and said second end of the slug adjacent the projection forming cavities;
- filling said block forming cavity with concrete;
- allowing said concrete to harden into a concrete block;
- separating the walls from each other and from the concrete block;
- separating the cavity forming projections and the projection forming cavities from the concrete block; and
- removing said slug from said concrete block, to form an opening extending through the concrete block.
- 2. The method of claim 1, comprising;
- providing the cavity forming projections as a part of a first said side wall, and providing the projection forming cavities as a part of a second said side wall.
- 3. The method of claim 2, comprising;
- providing the bottom wall with ridges and valleys so as to cast ridges and valleys into a surface of the concrete block that is in contact with the bottom wall.
- 4. The method of claim 2, comprising;
- providing one of the side walls with a socket, positioning a portion of the first end of the slug within this socket, providing the second end of the slug with a projection, providing the second side wall with an opening for receiving the projection at the end of the slug, and positioning the projection at the end of the slug in the opening in the second side wall.
- 5. The method of claim 2, comprising;
- providing the first side wall with an array of cavity forming projections surrounding a first connection location for the slug, providing the opposed second side wall with a complementary array of projection forming cavities surrounding a second connection location for the slug, and supporting the slug with its opposite ends connected to the opposed side walls at the connection locations.
- 6. The method of claim 5, comprising;
- providing one of the side walls with a socket, positioning a first end portion of the slug within this socket, providing the second end of the slug with a projection, providing the second side wall with an opening for receiving the projection at the end of the slug, and positioning the projection at the end of the slug in the opening in the second side wall.
- 7. The method of claim 1, comprising:
- providing an array of cavity forming projections surrounding a first connection location for the slug, and providing a complementary array of projection forming cavities surrounding a second connection location for the slug, and supporting the slug with its opposite ends connected to the two connection locations.
- 8. The method of claim 2, further comprising;
- providing the side wall that includes the projection forming cavities with a well forming projection that projects into the block forming cavity, providing the well forming projection with an inwardly opening slot, providing a length of cable, bending the cable to form a loop and two legs, inserting the loop into said slot and positioning the two legs within the block forming cavity, so that the legs become incorporated within the concrete block, and the well forming projection moves away from the loop when the wall into which it is included is separated from the concrete block, and the loop becomes positioned within the well formed in the concrete block by the well forming projection.
- 9. The method of claim 1, comprising;
- providing the bottom wall with one of said cavity forming projections and said projection forming cavities, and supporting the other of said cavity forming projections and projection forming cavities at an opposite boundary of the block forming cavity.
- 10. The method of claim 9, comprising;
- providing the projection forming cavities as a part of the bottom wall, and providing a support frame for the cavity forming projections, connecting the cavity forming projections to said support frame, inserting the cavity forming projections into said block forming cavity and sitting said support frame on the form.
- 11. The method of claim 10, comprising;
- supporting the first end of the slug on the bottom wall, and connecting the second end of the slug to the support frame for the cavity forming projections, and after the concrete has hardened, lifting on the support frame to pull it away from the concrete block and pull the cavity forming projections and the slug out from the concrete block.
- 12. The method of claim 8, comprising;
- providing at least one side wall with ridges and valleys so as to cast ridges and valleys into a surface of the concrete block that is in contact with said side wall.
- 13. The method of claim 10, comprising;
- supporting on said support frame a well forming projection that extends from the support frame into the block forming cavity, providing said well forming projection with an inwardly opening slot, providing a length of cable, bending the cable to form a loop and two legs, inserting the loop into said slot and positioning the two legs within the block forming cavity, so that the legs become incorporated within the concrete block, whereby the well forming projection moves away from the loop when the support frame is lifted, and whereby the loop becomes positioned within the well formed in the concrete block by the well forming projection.
- 14. A method of forming a concrete building block, comprising;
- providing bottom, side and end walls of a form;
- providing two arrays of cavity forming projections and two arrays of projection forming cavities;
- providing two elongated slugs, each slug having first and second ends;
- supporting said walls to form a block forming cavity;
- supporting one array of the cavity forming projections and one array of the projection forming cavities at opposed locations across the block forming cavity at one end of the block forming cavity;
- supporting the second array of cavity forming projections and the second array of projection forming cavities at opposed locations across the block forming cavity at a second end of the block forming cavity;
- supporting the first slug within the block forming cavity, to extend across the block forming cavity, with said first end of the slug within the first array of cavity forming projections and said second end of the first slug within the first array of projection forming cavities;
- supporting the second slug within the block forming cavity, to extend across the block forming cavity, with the first end of the second slug within the second array of cavity forming projections and said second end of the second slug within the second array of projection forming cavities;
- filling said block forming cavity with concrete;
- allowing said concrete to harden into a concrete block;
- separating the walls from each other and from the concrete block;
- separating the cavity forming projections and the projection forming cavities from the concrete block; and
- removing said first and second slugs from said concrete block, to form a pair of openings extending through the concrete block.
- 15. A method of claim 14, comprising;
- providing the cavity forming projections as a part of a first said side wall, and providing the projection forming cavities as a part of a second said side wall.
- 16. The method of claim 15, comprising;
- providing the bottom wall with ridges and valleys so as to cast ridges and valleys into a surface of the concrete block that is in contact with the bottom wall.
- 17. The method of claim 15, comprising;
- providing the side wall that includes the projection forming cavities with a well forming projection that projects into the block forming cavity, providing the well forming projection with an inwardly opening slot, providing a length of cable, bending the cable to form a loop and two legs, inserting the loop into said slot and positioning the two legs within the block forming cavity, so that the legs become incorporated within the concrete block, and the well forming projection moves away from the loop when the wall into which it is included is separated from the concrete block, and the loop becomes positioned within the well formed in the concrete block by the well forming projection.
- 18. The method of claim 14, comprising;
- providing the projection forming cavities as a part of the bottom wall, and providing a support frame for the cavity forming projections, connecting the cavity forming projections to said support frame, inserting the cavity forming projections into the block forming cavity and sitting said support frame on the form.
- 19. The method of claim 18, comprising;
- supporting the first ends of the slugs on the bottom wall, and connecting the second ends of the slugs to the support frame for the cavity forming projections, and after the concrete has hardened, lifting on the support frame to pull it away from the concrete block and pull the cavity forming projections and the slugs out from the concrete block.
- 20. The method of claim 14, comprising;
- providing at least one side wall with ridges and valleys so as to cast ridges and valleys into a surface of the concrete block that is in contact with said side wall.
