Claims
- 1. A reinforced cast composition, said composition comprising at least one cured or hardened matrix material and at least a reinforcing amount of reinforcing discontinuous fibres, said fibers having shank portions of substantinally uniform generally rectangular cross-sectional area and enlarged portions at each end of the shank, said enlarged portions at each end each having rounded surfaces terminated in outer edges inclined toward one another which generally conform to the asymptote of a hyperbola, the enlarged portions being larger than the shank portions by an amount at least sufficient to improve the resistance of said enlarged portions to extraction from said matrix, provided, however, that the size of the enlarged area is less than the size required to cause fiber shank rupture rather than fiber-matrix interface slippage upon the application of separating forces.
- 2. The composition of claim 1, wherein from 0.5 to 5% by absolute volume of said reinforcing fibers is used.
- 3. The composition of claim 1, wherein from 1 to 2% by absolute volume of said reinforcing fibers is used.
- 4. Composition of claim 3, wherein said matrix material is a cementitious material and said reinforcing fibers are steel reinforcing fibers.
- 5. Composition of claim 4, wherein said shank portions have an average width of about 0.01 to about 0.06 inches and an average thickness of about 0.005 to about 0.03 inches, said reinforcing fibers having an average length of about 1/4 to about 3 inches.
- 6. Composition according to claim 5, wherein said enlarged portions are about twice as large in transverse cross-sectional area than said shank portions.
- 7. Composition according to claim 1, wherein said discontinuous fibers are mixed into and randomly spaced throughout said matrix material.
- 8. The composition of claim 1 wherein the ratio of the thickness of said enlarged portions of said fibers to the thickness of the shank portion thereof being in the range of 1.5 to 6.
- 9. The method of claim 3 wherein the ratio of the thickness of the end portions of said filaments to the thickness of the smallest cross-section of the shank thereof being in the range of 1.5 to 6.
- 10. A reinforced cast composition, said composition comprising at least one cured or hardened matrix material and at least a reinforcing amount of reinforcing fibers, said fibers having a shank portion of substantially uniform generally rectangular cross-sectional area and raised projections extending from two opposite faces of the shank at each end of the fibers, each projection having a generally parabolic shaped longitudinal cross-sectional elevation and a generally rectangular transverse cross-sectional elevation, the raised projections forming enlarged portions at each end of the shank of said fibers having cross-sectional areas at least about 1.5 times greater than the cross-sectional area of the shank, said enlarged end portions improving the resistance of said fibers to extraction from said matrix upon the application of separating forces while permitting interfacial movement of the fibre in the matrix just prior to rupture of the fibre.
- 11. A reinforced cast composition, said composition comprising at least one cured or hardened matrix material and at least a reinforcing amount of reinforcing fibers, said fibers having a shank portion of substantially uniform generally rectangular cross-sectional area and enlarged portions comprising raised projections extending from two opposite faces of the shank and at least near each end of the fiber, each projection having a generally hyperbolic shaped profile when viewed in the longitudinal cross-sectional elevation and a generally rectangular transverse cross-sectional elevation, said enlarged portions having cross-sectional areas at least about 1.5 times greater than the cross-sectional area of the shank, the enlarged portions improving the resistance of said fibers to extraction from said matrix upon the application of separating forces while permitting interfacial movement of the fibre in the matrix just prior to rupture of the fibre.
- 12. The reinforced cast composition of claim 1 wherein said enlarged portions comprise raised projections extending from at least one face of the shank and at least near each end of the fiber, each projection having a generally parabolic profile when viewed in the longitudinal cross-sectional elevation and a generally rectangular transverse cross-sectional elevation, said enlarged portions having cross-sectional areas at least about 1.5 times greater than the cross-sectional area of the shank.
- 13. The reinforced cast composition of claim 1 wherein said enlarged portions comprise raised projections extending from at least one face of the shank and at least near each end of the fiber, each projection having a generally hyperbolic profile when viewed in the longitudinal cross-sectional elevation and a generally rectangular transverse cross-sectional elevation, said enlarged portions having a cross-sectional area of at least about 1.5 times larger than the cross-sectional area of the shank.
- 14. The reinforced cast composition of claim 1 wherein the enlarged portions at each end of the shank include end portions of the fiber folded upon the fiber, with said folded end portions extending generally parallel and substantially contiguous with the fiber, wherein the thickness of each folded portion is from 2 to 4 times the thickness of the fiber.
