Claims
- 1. A polymeric composite composition, comprising:
a polymeric resin; a conductive filler; and a polycyclic aromatic compound, in an amount effect to increase the electrical conductivity of the polymeric composition relative to the same composition without the polycyclic aromatic compound.
- 2. The polymeric composition of claim 1, wherein the polymeric resin comprises a thermoplastic resin.
- 3. The polymeric composition of claim 2, wherein the thermoplastic resin is polyacetal, polyacrylic, styrene acrylonitrile, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene, polycarbonate, polystyrene, polyethylene, polyphenylene ether, polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polybutylene terephthalate, Nylon, polyamideimide, polyarylate, polyurethane, ethylene propylene diene rubber, ethylene propylene diene monomer, polyarylsulfone, polyethersulfone, polyphenylene sulfide, polyvinyl chloride, polysulfone, polyetherimide, polytetrafluoroethylene, fluorinated ethylene propylene, perfluoroalkoxyethylene, polychlorotrifluoroethylene, polyvinylidene fluoride, polyvinyl fluoride, polyetherketone, polyether etherketone, polyether ketone ketone, liquid crystal polymers, or a mixture comprising at least one of the foregoing thermoplastics.
- 4. The polymeric composition of claim 2, wherein the thermoplastic resin is polycarbonate, polybutylene terephthalate, or a mixture comprising at least one of the foregoing resins.
- 5. The polymeric composition of claim 1, wherein the polymeric resin comprises about 10 to about 99.5 wt % of the total weight of the composition.
- 6. The polymeric composition of claim 1, wherein the conductive filler comprises a carbonaceous filler.
- 7. The polymeric composition of claim 6, wherein the carbonaceous filler is single-walled carbon nanotubes, multi-walled carbon nanotubes, vapor grown carbon fibers, carbon black, graphite, or a mixture comprising one or more of the foregoing carbonaceous fillers.
- 8. The polymeric composition of claim 6, wherein the carbonaceous filler comprises about 0.25 wt % to about 60 wt % of the total weight of the composition.
- 9. The polymeric composition of claim 1, wherein the polycyclic aromatic compound is a phthalocyanine, a porphyrin, a pyrene, an anthracene, or a mixture comprising one or more of the foregoing polycyclic aromatic compounds.
- 10. The polymeric composition of claim 1, wherein the polycyclic aromatic compound comprises a metal center.
- 11. The polymeric composition of claim 1, wherein the polycyclic aromatic compound comprises at least one substituent.
- 12. The polymeric composition of claim 11, wherein the substituent is hydrogen; a halogen atom; an oxygen atom; a sulfur atom; a hydroxyl group; a carbonyl group; a sulfonyl group; a sulfinyl group; an alkyleneoxyalkylene group; a phosphonyl group; a phosphinyl group; an amino group; an imino group; C1 to C6 alkyl; C1 to C6 alkoxy; aryl; C1 to C6 alkyl substituted by at least one of C1 to C6 alkyl, C1 to C6 alkoxy, or the salt of a sulfonate, carboxylate or phosphonate group; C1 to C6 alkoxy substituted by at least one of C1 to C6 alkyl, C1 to C6 alkoxy, or the salt of a sulfonate, carboxylate or phosphonate group; aryl substituted by at least one of C1 to C6 alkyl, C1 to C6 alkoxy, or the salt of a sulfonate, carboxylate or phosphonate group; a six membered aromatic ring in combination with the carbon atoms to which they are attached, said aromatic ring optionally substituted by C1 to C6 alkyl, C1 to C6 alkoxy, the alkali metal salt of a sulfonate, carboxylate or phosphonate group, or a mixture comprising one or more of the foregoing substituents.
- 13. The polymeric composition of claim 1, wherein the polycyclic aromatic compound is copper phthalocyanine.
- 14. The polymeric composition of claim 1, wherein the polycyclic aromatic compound comprises about 0.0025 wt % to about 5 wt % of the total weight of the composition.
- 15. A polymeric composite comprising, based on the total weight of the composition:
about 10 to about 99.5 wt % of a polymeric resin; about 0.25 to about 60 wt % of a conductive filler; and about 0.0025 to about 5 wt % of a polycyclic aromatic compound.
- 16. A method of forming a polymeric composition comprising:
melt blending a polymeric resin, a conductive filler, and a polycyclic aromatic compound; wherein the electrical conductivity of the polymeric composition is enhanced relative to the same composition without the polycyclic aromatic compound.
- 17. The method of claim 16, wherein the polymeric resin comprises a thermoplastic resin.
- 18. The method of claim 16, wherein the thermoplastic resin is polycarbonate, polybutylene terephthalate, or a mixture comprising one or more of the foregoing resins.
- 19. The method of claim 16, wherein the polycyclic aromatic compound is a phthalocyanine, a porphyrin, a pyrene, an anthracene, or a mixture comprising one or more of the foregoing polycyclic aromatic compounds.
- 20. The method of claim 16, wherein the polycyclic aromatic compound comprises about 0.0025 wt % to about 5 wt % of the total weight of the composition.
- 21. A method of forming a polymeric composition comprising:
melt blending a polymeric resin, a conductive filler and a polycyclic aromatic compound; and extruding the melt blend.
