Claims
- 1. A conduit for use in transporting plastic resin from a plasticator injection unit to an injection mold cavity, the conduit comprising a metal tube having two ends and a smooth interior surface of a selected diameter, and including at least one flexible curved portion having a finite radius of curvature several times the tube diameter for permitting thermally induced changes in the radius of curvature and curvilinear length of the at least one flexible curved portion while maintaining a constant relative position of the two ends.
- 2. The conduit of claim 1 wherein the curved portion comprises a generally S-shaped configuration that flexes with temperature changes thus permitting the maintenance of a constant position between the two ends.
- 3. The conduit of claim 1 wherein the curved portion comprises a generally C-shaped configuration that flexes with temperature changes thus permitting the maintenance of a constant position between the two ends.
- 4. The conduit of claim 1 wherein the metal tube comprises a seamless steel tube having a wall thickness and strength sufficient to withstand the pressure applied to molten plastic during an injection and packing cycle.
- 5. The conduit of claim 4 wherein the metal tube comprises cold drawn, normalized 4130 steel.
- 6. The conduit of claim 1 further comprising a spiral groove along substantially the entire length of the tube.
- 7. The conduit of claim 6 further comprising a heater element embedded in the spiral groove.
- 8. The conduit of claim 7 wherein the heater element comprises a chrome-nickel resistance wire encased in an electrical insulating material.
- 9. The conduit of claim 6 wherein the spiral groove has a pitch which varies as a function of position along the length of the tube.
- 10. The conduit of claim 1 further comprising a layer of thermal insulation enveloping substantially the entire length of the tube to minimize any outward radiation or convection of heat.
- 11. A conduit for use in an injection molding machine as a part of a manifold for transporting plastic resin from a plasticator injection unit to an injection mold cavity, the conduit comprising: a seamless metal tube having two ends and a smooth interior surface of a selected diameter, including at least one flexible curved portion having a finite radius of curvature several times the tube diameter for permitting thermally induced changes in the radius of curvature and curvilinear length of the at least one flexible curved portion while maintaining a constant relative position of the two ends, a spiral groove along substantially the entire length of the tube, a heater element embedded in the spiral groove, and a layer of thermal insulation enveloping substantially the entire length of the tube to minimize any outward flow of heat.
