Claims
- 1. A gas-liquid separator for mounting in a tank assembly; said separator comprising:(a) a mounting plate assembly including a flange portion; (b) an upstream coalescing stage layer having a first end and a second end; (c) a downstream drain stage layer having a first end and a second end; (i) the coalescing stage layer being positioned around the drain stage layer, for use with outside-in air flow; (ii) each of the downstream drain stage layer and the upstream coalescing stage layer having portions of frusto-conical shape; (iii) the second end of the coalescing stage layer and the second end of the downstream drain stage layer being secured to the mounting plate assembly.
- 2. A gas-liquid separator according to claim 1 including:(a) a molded plastic end cap secured to and closing the first ends of the coalescing stage layer and the drain stage layer.
- 3. A gas-liquid separator according to claim 2 including:(a) a support member positioned in extension between the mounting plate assembly and the molded plastic end cap.
- 4. A gas-liquid separator according to claim 3 wherein:(a) said coalescing stage layer is selected from fiberglass, polyester, polypropylene and metal.
- 5. A gas-liquid separator according to claim 4 wherein:(a) said drain stage layer is selected from fiberglass, polyester, polypropylene and metal.
- 6. A gas-liquid separator according to claim 5 wherein:(a) said coalescing stage layer is molded or formed media.
- 7. A gas-liquid separator according to claim 6 wherein:(a) said drain stage media is wrapped media.
- 8. A gas-liquid separator according to claim 7 wherein:(a) said second ends of said coalescing stage media and said drain stage media are secured to said mounting plate assembly with a hardenable sealing material selected from urethane, epoxy and plastisol.
- 9. A gas-liquid separator according to claim 1 wherein:(a) said mounting plate assembly is an integrated upper end cap and flange.
- 10. A gas-liquid separator according to claim 9 wherein:(a) the mounting plate assembly includes an inverted trough portion; and (b) the second ends of the coalescing stage layer and the drain stage layer project into the inverted trough portion of the mounting plate assembly.
- 11. A gas-liquid separator according to claim 10 wherein:(a) the inverted trough portion comprises a portion attached to a remainder of the mounting plate assembly.
- 12. A gas-liquid separator according to claim 11 wherein:(a) the portion of the inverted trough is attached to the remainder of the mounting plate assembly by welding.
- 13. A gas-liquid separator for mounting in a tank assembly; said separator comprising:(a) a mounting plate assembly including a flange portion; (b) an upstream coalescing stage layer; (i) said coalescing stage layer having a wide end attached to the mounting plate and a narrow end remote from the mounting plate; and, (c) a downstream drain stage layer; (i) said drain stage layer having a wide end attached to the mounting plate and a narrow end remote from the mounting plate; and (ii) said drain stage layer being surrounded by said coalescing stage layer; (A) each of said coalescing stage layer and said drain stage layer being selected from fiberglass, polyester, polypropylene and metal.
- 14. A gas-liquid separator according to claim 13 wherein:(a) the coalescing stage layer has a frusto-conical shape; and (b) the drain stage layer has a a frusto-conical shape.
- 15. A gas-liquid separator according to claim 14 wherein:(a) said coalescing stage layer is selected from fiberglass, polyester, polypropylene and metal.
- 16. A gas-liquid separator according to claim 14 wherein:(a) said drain stage layer is selected from fiberglass, polyester, polypropylene and metal.
- 17. An assembly comprising:(a) a liquid reservoir tank assembly including: (i) a tank body having an open end; (A) an upper portion of the tank body forming a liquid separation chamber; (B) a lower portion of the tank body forming a liquid reservoir; (C) the tank body including an air inlet in said upper portion; (ii) a tank cover removably positioned to cover said open end in said tank body; (A) said tank cover including a gas outlet; and, (b) a gas-liquid separator removably mounted in said liquid reservoir tank assembly; said gas-liquid separator comprising: (i) a mounting plate assembly including a flange portion; (A) said flange portion being secured between said tank cover and said tank body; (ii) an upstream coalescing stage layer having a first end and a second end; and, (iii) a downstream drain stage layer having a first end and a second end; (A) said coalescing stage layer being positioned around the drain stage layer for outside-in air flow; (B) each of the downstream drain stage layer and the upstream coalescing stage layer having portions of frusto-conical shape; and, (C) said second end of the coalescing stage layer and said second end of the downstream drain stage layer being secured to the mounting plate assembly.
- 18. An assembly accordingly to claim 17 including:(a) a cylindrical shroud positioned around said gas-liquid separator.
- 19. An assembly according to claim 17 including:(a) said mounting plate of said gas-liquid separator includes an inverted trough portion; and (b) said second ends of said coalescing stage layer and said downstream drain stage layer project into, and are secured to, said inverted trough portion.
- 20. An assembly according to claim 19 wherein:(a) said inverted trough portion is secured to said flange portion by welding.
