Claims
- 1. A dual crankshaft engine, comprising:
- first and second crankshafts, each of said first and second crankshafts having a rotational axis and being mounted in the engine for rotational motion so that the rotational axes of said first and second crankshafts are substantially parallel, said first crankshaft having a first crank pin, said second crankshaft having a second crank pin, said first and second crank pins being spaced apart by a fixed distance B;
- a piston mounted in said engine so that said piston moves in reciprocal linear motion; and
- a connecting assembly for connecting said piston and said first and second crankshafts, comprising:
- a first member having first and second attachment positions spaced apart by a distance A, and a third attachment position centered between said first and second attachment positions, said piston being rotatably connected to said first member at said third attachment position,
- a second member having first and second attachment positions spaced apart by a distance C, said first attachment position of said second member being rotatably connected to said first crankshaft at said first crank pin, said second attachment position of said second member being connected to said second attachment position of said first member, and
- a third member having first and second attachment positions spaced apart by a distance substantially equal to distance C, said first attachment position of said third member being connected to said second crank pin, said second attachment position of said third member being connected to said first attachment position of said first member, said second and third members being arranged in a crossing relationship.
- 2. An engine according to claim 1, wherein the ratio B:A is between 4:1.5 (2.666) and 4:3.5 (1.142) and the ratio B:C is between 4:4.5 (0.888) and 4:5.5 (0.727).
- 3. An engine according to claim 2, wherein the ratios A:B:C are 1.975:4:5.15.
- 4. An engine according to claim 2, wherein the ratios A:B:C are 3:4:5.
- 5. An engine according to claim 2, wherein the ratios A:B:C are 2:4:5.
- 6. An apparatus for translating rotational motion to reciprocal linear motion, comprising:
- first means for reciprocal linear motion along a reciprocal axis;
- a first crankshaft for rotational motion about a first rotational axis, said first crankshaft including a first crank pin having a first crank pin axis;
- a second crankshaft for rotational motion about a second rotational axis substantially parallel to said first rotational axis, said second crankshaft including a second crank pin having a second crank pin axis, said first and second crank pin axes being spaced apart by a distance B;
- second means for synchronizing the rotation of said first and second crankshafts;
- third means for connecting said first means with said first and second crankshafts so that said first means moves in essentially simple harmonic linear motion in response to uniform rotational motion of said first and second crankshafts, said third means comprising:
- a first member rotatably connected to said first means at a first attachment axis, said first member having second and third attachment axes spaced apart by a distance A, each of said second and third attachment axes being spaced a distance A/2 from said first attachment axis,
- a second member having fourth and fifth attachment axes spaced apart by a distance C, said second member being rotatably connected to first member so that said fourth attachment axis is coincident with said second attachment axis and rotatably connected to said first crank pin so that said fifth attachment axis is coincident with said first crank pin axis, and
- a third member having sixth and seventh attachment axes spaced apart by a distance substantially equal to the distance C, said third member being rotatably connected to first member so that said sixth attachment axis is coincident with said third attachment axis and rotatably connected to said second crank pin so that said seventh attachment axis is coincident with said second crank pin axis;
- said second and third members being arranged in a crossing relationship; and
- distance A being less than distance B, and distance B being less than distance C.
- 7. An engine according to claim 6, wherein the ratios of distances A:B:C are 1.975:4:5.15.
- 8. An engine according to claim 6, wherein the ratios of distances A:B:C are 3:4:5.
- 9. An engine according to claim 6, wherein the ratios of distances A:B:C are 2:4:5.
- 10. An internal combustion engine, comprising:
- a block having a cylinder, said cylinder having a longitudinal axis;
- a piston mounted in said block for reciprocal linear motion in said cylinder;
- a first crankshaft mounted in said block for rotational motion about a rotational axis, said first crankshaft having a first crank pin;
- a second crankshaft mounted in said block for rotational motion about a rotational axis substantially parallel to said rotational axis of said first crankshaft, said second crankshaft having a second crank pin;
- means for synchronizing the rotation of said first and second crankshafts and for establishing co-rotation of said first and second crankshafts; and
- a connecting assembly, comprising:
- a first member rotatably connected to said piston at a first connection, and
- second and third members rotatably connected to said first member at respective second and third connections offset from said first connection and offset from each other, and rotatably connected to respective ones of said crankshaft pins of said first and second crankshafts, said second and third members being arranged in a crossing relationship.
