Claims
- 1. A cleat (30) for connecting a shoe to a bicycle pedal (2) having first and second hooks (4,5), the cleat comprising:
- a cleat body (30z) having a longitudinal first axis (X.sub.l) extending in a front direction and a rear direction;
- a front engaging portion (30a) disposed on a front of the cleat body (30z) for engaging the first hook (4), the front engaging portion (30a) having a front engaging portion undersurface (30au) and a front engaging portion top surface (3at);
- a rear engaging portion (30b) disposed on a rear of the cleat body (30z) for engaging the second hook (5), the rear engaging portion (30b) having a rear engaging portion undersurface (30bu) and a rear engaging portion top surface (30bt);
- a first laterally extending portion (30re) extending laterally from a first side (30rs) of the cleat body (30z);
- a second laterally extending portion (30le) extending laterally from a second side (30ls) of the cleat body (30z); and
- wherein a cleat connecting opening (30ro,30lo) is disposed in at least one of the first laterally extending portion (30re) and the second laterally extending portion (30le).
- 2. The cleat according to claim 1 wherein the cleat connecting opening (30ro,30lo) has an elongated shape.
- 3. The cleat according to claim 2 wherein the cleat connecting opening (30ro,30lo) has an oval shape.
- 4. The cleat according to claim 3 wherein the cleat connecting opening (30ro,30lo) extends along an opening axis (X.sub.o) perpendicular to the first axis (X.sub.l).
- 5. The cleat according to claim 1 wherein the cleat connecting opening (30ro,30lo) includes a first opening (30ro) disposed in the first laterally extending portion (30re) and a second opening (30lo) disposed in the second laterally extending portion (30le).
- 6. The cleat (30) according to claim 5 wherein the first opening (30ro) has an elongated shape, and wherein the second opening (30lo) has an elongated shape.
- 7. The cleat (30) according to claim 6 wherein the first opening (30ro) has an oval shape, and wherein the second opening (30lo) has an oval shape.
- 8. The cleat (30) according to claim 6 wherein the first opening (30ro) and the second opening (30lo) extend along a common opening axis X.sub.o.
- 9. The cleat (30) according to claim 8 wherein the opening axis (X.sub.o) is perpendicular to the first axis (X.sub.l).
- 10. The cleat (30) according to claim 1 wherein the first laterally extending portion (30re) has a semicircular outer edge (30re'), and wherein the second laterally extending portion (30le) has a semicircular outer edge (30le').
- 11. The cleat according to claim 10 wherein the cleat connecting opening (30ro,30lo) has an oval shape.
- 12. The cleat according to claim 11 wherein the cleat connecting opening (30ro,30lo) extends along an opening axis (X.sub.o) perpendicular to the first axis (X.sub.l).
- 13. The cleat according to claim 10 wherein the cleat connecting opening (30ro,30lo) includes a first opening (30ro) disposed in the first laterally extending portion (30re) and a second opening (30lo) disposed in the second laterally extending portion (30le).
- 14. The cleat (30) according to claim 13 wherein the first opening (30ro) has an elongated shape, and wherein the second opening (30lo) has an elongated shape.
- 15. The cleat (30) according to claim 14 wherein the first opening (30ro) has an oval shape, and wherein the second opening (30lo) has an oval shape.
- 16. The cleat (30) according to claim 14 wherein the first opening (30ro) and the second opening (30lo) extend along a common opening axis X.sub.o.
- 17. The cleat (30) according to claim 16 wherein the opening axis (X.sub.o) is perpendicular to the first axis (X.sub.l).
- 18. The cleat (30) according to claim 17 wherein the first opening (30ro) has an oval shape, and wherein the second opening (30lo) has an oval shape.
- 19. The cleat (30) according to claim 1 wherein the front engaging portion undersurface (30au) is inclined relative to the first axis (X.sub.l), and wherein the rear engaging portion undersurface (30bu) is inclined relative to the first axis (X.sub.l).
- 20. The cleat (30) according to claim 1 wherein the front engaging portion top surface (30at) and an upwardly extending front wall (30aw) define a front recess (30ar), and wherein the rear engaging portion top surface (30bt) and an upwardly extending rear wall (30bw) define a rear recess (30br).
- 21. The cleat (30) according to claim 20 further comprising:
- a front projecting member (30c) disposed in the front recess (30ar); and
- a rear projecting member (30f) disposed in the rear recess (30br).
- 22. The cleat (30) according to claim 21 wherein the front projecting member (30c) has a forwardly convex shape.
- 23. The cleat (30) according to claim 22 wherein the front projecting member (30c) has a semicircular shape.
- 24. The cleat (30) according to claim 21 wherein the rear projecting member (30f) has a rearwardly convex shape.
- 25. The cleat (30) according to claim 24 wherein the rear projecting member (30f) has a semicircular shape.
- 26. The cleat (30) according to claim 24 wherein the front projecting member (30c) has a forwardly convex shape.
- 27. The cleat (30) according to claim 26 wherein the front projecting member (30c) has a semicircular shape, and wherein the rear projecting member (30f) has a semicircular shape.
- 28. The cleat (30) according to claim 21 wherein the front projecting member (30c) is laterally centered in the front recess (30ar).
- 29. The cleat (30) according to claim 21 wherein the rear projecting member (30f) is laterally centered in the rear recess (30br).
- 30. The cleat (30) according to claim 21 wherein the front wall (30aw) is perpendicular to the first axis (X.sub.l).
- 31. The cleat (30) according to claim 21 wherein the rear wall (30bw) does not extend rearwardly from the rear projecting member (30f).
- 32. The cleat (30) according to claim 31 wherein the rear wall (30bw) extends forwardly from the rear projecting member (30f).
- 33. The cleat (30) according to claim 21 wherein the front recess (30ar) extends across a front of the front projecting member (30c).
- 34. The cleat (30) according to claim 33 wherein the front projecting member (30c) is laterally centered in the front recess (30ar).
- 35. The cleat (30) according to claim 34 wherein the front wall (30aw) is perpendicular to the first axis (X.sub.l).
- 36. The cleat (30) according to claim 34 wherein the rear projecting member (30f) is laterally centered in the rear recess (30br).
- 37. The cleat (30) according to claim 36 wherein the rear wall (30bw) does not extend rearwardly from the rear projecting member (30f).
- 38. The cleat (30) according to claim 37 wherein the rear wall (30bw) extends forwardly from the rear projecting member (30f).
- 39. The cleat (30) according to claim 1 further comprising:
- an oblique forward facing first contact surface (30rd) disposed in front of the first laterally extending portion (30re), wherein the first contact surface (30rd) faces outwardly from the first axis (X.sub.l); and
- an oblique forward facing second contact surface (30ld) disposed in front of the second laterally extending portion (30le), wherein the second contact surface (30ld) faces outwardly from the first axis (X.sub.l).
- 40. A cleat (30) for connecting a shoe to a bicycle pedal (2) having first and second hook (4,5), the cleat comprising:
- a cleat body (30z) having a cleat connecting means (30ro,30lo) and a longitudinal first axis (X.sub.l) extending in a front direction and a rear direction;
- a front engaging portion (30a) disposed on a front of the cleat body (30z) for engaging the first hook (4), the front engaging portion (30a) having a front engaging portion undersurface (30au) and a front engaging portion top surface (30at);
- wherein the front engaging portion top surface (30at) and an upwardly extending front wall (30aw) define a front recess (30ar);
- a semicircular front projecting member (30c) disposed in the front recess (30ar); and
- a rear engaging portion (30b) disposed on a rear of the cleat body (30z) for engaging the second hook (5).
- 41. A cleat (30) for connecting a shoe to a bicycle pedal (2) having first and second hooks (4,5), the cleat comprising:
- a cleat body (30z) having a cleat connecting means (30ro,30lo) and a longitudinal first axis (X.sub.l) extending in a front and a rear direction;
- a front engaging portion (30a) disposed on a front of the cleat body (30z) for engaging the first hook (4), the front engaging portion (30a) having a front engaging portion undersurface (30au) and a front engaging portion top surface (30at);
- wherein the front engaging portion top surface (30at) and an upwardly extending front wall (30aw) define a front recess (30ar);
- wherein the front wall (30aw) is perpendicular to the first axis (X.sub.l);
- a front projecting member (30c) disposed in the front recess (30ar) and
- a rear engaging portion (30b) disposed on a rear of the cleat body (30z) for engaging the second hook (5).
- 42. A cleat (30) for connecting a shoe to a bicycle pedal (2) having first and second hooks (4,5), the cleat comprising:
- a cleat body (30z) having a cleat connecting means (30ro,30lo) and a longitudinal first axis (X.sub.l) extending in a front direction and a rear direction;
- a front engaging portion (30a) disposed on a front of the cleat body (30z) for engaging the first hook (4);
- a rear engaging portion (30b) disposed on a rear of the cleat body (30z) for engaging the second hook (5), the rear engaging portion (30b) having a rear engaging portion undersurface (30bu) and a rear engaging portion top surface (30bt);
- wherein the rear engaging portion top surface (30bt) and an upwardly extending rear wall (30bw) define a rear recess (30br);
- a rear projecting member (30f) disposed in an intermediate portion of the rear recess (30br);
- wherein the rear projecting member (30f) has a rearwardly convex shape; and
- wherein the rear projecting member (30f) is laterally centered in the rear recess (30br).
- 43. A cleat (30) for connecting a shoe to a bicycle pedal (2) having first and second hooks (4,5), the cleat comprising:
- a cleat body (30z) having a cleat connecting means (30ro,30lo) and a longitudinal first axis (X.sub.l) extending in a front direction and a rear direction;
- a front engaging portion (30a) disposed on a front of the cleat body (30z) for engaging the first hook (4);
- a rear engaging portion (30b) disposed on a rear of the cleat body (30z) for engaging the second hook (5), the rear engaging portion (30b) having a rear engaging portion undersurface (30bu) and a rear engaging portion top surface (30bt);
- wherein the rear engaging portion top surface (30bt) and an upwardly extending rear wall (30bw) define a rear recess (30br);
- a rear projecting member (30f) disposed in an intermediate portion of the rear recess (30br);
- wherein the rear projecting member (30f) has a rearwardly convex shape; and
- wherein the rear wall (30bw) does not extend rearwardly from the rear projecting member (30f).
- 44. The cleat (30) according to claim 43 wherein the rear wall (30bw) extends forwardly from the rear projecting member (30f).
