Claims
- 1. A circuit for providing current to a load, comprising:
a first current source coupled to provide a constant current or a variable current to said load; a second current source coupled to a resistor; a constant current amplifier that controls application of said constant current to the load when the voltage across said load is below a predetermined voltage level, wherein the output of said constant current amplifier is coupled to control said first and second current sources; and a constant voltage amplifier that controls application of said variable current to said load when the voltage across said load is at or above said predetermined voltage level, wherein the output of said constant voltage amplifier is coupled to control said first and second current sources.
- 2. The circuit of claim 1, wherein said constant current is based on said resistor.
- 3. The circuit of claim 1, wherein said variable current is based on the voltage across said load.
- 4. The circuit of claim 1, further comprising a diode or a transistor that is coupled to said first and second current sources and to the output of said constant current amplifier.
- 5. The circuit of claim 1, further comprising a diode or a transistor that is coupled to said first and second current sources and to the output of said constant voltage amplifier.
- 6. The circuit of claim 1, wherein said first and second current sources are voltage-controlled current sources.
- 7. The circuit of claim 1, further comprising a pull-down current source that sets a base-line voltage being applied to said first and second current sources.
- 8. The circuit of claim 1, further comprising a priority circuit coupled to receive the outputs of said amplifiers and further coupled to provide one of the outputs to said first and second current sources, said priority circuit selecting the output which causes said first current source to provide a lower magnitude current to said load.
