Claims
- 1. A label printing machine, comprising:
- a machine frame; a printing lever supported to be movable with respect to said machine frame; a printing head connected to said printing lever to be movable thereby; an operating lever for operating said printing lever in a print direction and in a return direction; said operating lever being integrally connected with said printing lever and movable therewith;
- a platen opposable to said printing head; said printing head being movable to said platen upon movement of said printing lever in said print direction;
- a constant printing pressure mechanism, comprising:
- pressure applying means attached to said printing lever for being moved thereby;
- pressure receiving means comprised of elastic and resilient elastomeric material and supported on said frame to be stationary with respect to movement by said pressure applying means against said pressure receiving means; said pressure receiving means being provided for being resiliently engaged by and being positioned to be engaged by said pressure applying means upon movement of said pressure applying means in said print direction; said pressure receiving means being adapted to resiliently resist motion of said pressure applying means past said pressure receiving means and to resiliently urge said pressure means to return away from said platen upon engagement under pressure of said pressure applying means with said pressure receiving means until said pressure applying means applies more than a predetermined pressure to said pressure receiving means, whereupon said pressure receiving means resiliently deforms so that said pressure applying means with said printing head resiliently snap past said pressure receiving means; said printing head is thereafter freed by said pressure receiving means to move to said platen for printing a label.
- 2. The label printing machine of claim 1, wherein said pressure receiving means comprises a pressure receiving member, which is pivotally supported on said frame; biasing means for urging said pressure receiving member to a position blocking bypassage of said pressure applying means.
- 3. The label printing machine of claim 2, wherein said pressure applying means comprises a roller attached to and movable with said printing lever.
- 4. The label printing machine of claim 2, further comprising a pivot shaft on said frame; said pressure receiving member being supported on said pivot shaft for pivoting thereabout; said pressure receiving member having a projection means therefrom adapted to be engaged and pressed upon by said pressure applying means for pivoting said pressure receiving member, upon such engagement, out of the path in said print direction of said print lever; said biasing means being for normally urging said pressure receiving member projection means into the path of said pressure applying means.
- 5. The label printing machine of claim 4, wherein said pressure applying means comprises a roller attached to and movable with said printing lever and said roller being positioned to be moved into engagement with said projection means of said pressure receiving member.
- 6. The label printing machine of claim 1, further comprising printing head raising means for raising said printing head away from said platen following movement of said printing head to said platen.
- 7. The label printing machine of claim 6, wherein said raising means comprises a spring supported on said frame and positioned to be charged by said printing head as said printing head moves to said platen.
- 8. The label printing machine of claim 7, further comprising a flange supported on said frame; said spring being supported on said flange;
- said printing head including a lug positioned to engage said spring upon movement of said printing head to said platen.
- 9. A label printing machine comprising:
- a machine frame having a front end and a rear end; a printing lever supported on said frame to be movable with respect to said frame; said printing lever having a front end and a rear end spaced therefrom; a printing head connected to said printing lever near said front end to be movable by said printing lever; a platen supported by said frame in a position to be opposable to said printing head; said printing head being movable by said printing lever to said platen upon movement of said printing lever in a print direction; means for operating said printing lever in said print direction and in a return direction;
- a constant printing pressure mechanism comprising:
- pressure applying means attached to said printing lever for being moved thereby; pressure receiving means supported on said frame and comprising:
- a pivot shaft supported on said frame; a pressure receiving member pivotally supported on said pivot shaft for pivoting thereabout; said pressure receiving member having a projection extending therefrom into the pathway of movement of said pressure applying means when said print lever is moving in said print direction and adapted to be engaged and pressed upon by said pressure applying means such that such engagement and pressure attempts to pivot said pressure receiving means out of the path of motion in said print direction of said pressure applying means; biasing means for normally urging said pressure receiving member to move such that said projection is in the path of motion of said pressure applying means as said print lever moves in said print direction;
- a pressure controlling arm connected with said pressure receiving member and pivotable therewith about said pivot shaft;
- contact means supported stationary with respect to said frame and positioned to be engageable by said pressure controlling arm after that said arm has been pivoted a predetermined distance by pivoting of said pressure receiving member under the influence of said pressure applying means moving in said print direction;
- said pressure receiving member being comprised of elastic and resilient material such that to the extent that said pressure receiving member is blocked from pivoting completely out from beneath said pressure applying means as said pressure applying means moves with said print lever in said print direction, said pressure receiving member resiliently deflects to permit said pressure applying means to pass thereby as said print head moves to said platen.
- 10. The label printing machine of claim 9, wherein said pressure controlling arm has a side facing toward said contact means; an adjustable screw protruding from said side of said control arm and projecting toward said contact means, and said screw being adjustable in the length it extends from said side of said control arm toward said contact means for adjusting the distance between said contact means and said control arm, thereby to adjust the extent to which said pressure receiving member projection protrudes into the pathway of motion of said pressure applying means and to thereby adjust the pressure required to move said pressure applying means past said pressure receiving member.
- 11. The label printing machine of claim 9, wherein said pressure applying means comprises a roller attached to and movable with said printing lever and said roller being positioned to be moved into engagement with said projection.
- 12. The label printing machine of claim 9, further comprising a spring supported on said frame and positioned to be charged by said printing head as said printing head is moved to said platen, for raising said printing head away from said platen following said printing head being moved to said platen.
- 13. The label printing machine of claim 12, further comprising a flange supported on said frame; said spring being supported by said flange;
- said printing head including a lug positioned to engage said spring upon descent of said printing head to said platen.
- 14. A label printing machine, comprising:
- a machine frame; a printing lever supported to be movable with respect to said machine frame; a printing head connected to said printing lever to be movable thereby; means for operating said printing lever in a print direction and in a return direction;
- a platen opposable to said printing head; said printing head being movable to said platen upon movement of said printing lever in said print direction;
- a constant printing pressure mechanism, comprising:
- pressure receiving means comprising a pressure receiving member; a pivot shaft on said frame; said pressure receiving member being supported on said pivot shaft for pivoting thereabout;
- pressure applying means comprising a roller attached to and movable with said printing lever;
- said pressure receiving member having a projection extending therefrom adapted to be engaged and pressed upon by said pressure applying means for pivoting said pressure receiving member, upon such engagement, out of the path in said print direction of said print lever; biasing means for normally urging said pressure receiving member projection into the path of said pressure applying means and to a position blocking bypassage of said pressure applying means; said pressure applying means roller being positioned to be moved into engagement with said projection of said pressure receiving member upon motion of said printing head toward said platen;
- said pressure receiving member being comprised of elastic and resilient material and being positioned for being engaged by said pressure applying means roller upon movement of said roller in said print direction; said pressure receiving member being resilient for resiliently resisting motion of said pressure applying means roller past said pressure receiving means and for urging said pressure applying means roller to return away from said platen upon engagement under pressure of said pressure applying means roller with said pressure receiving member and until said pressure applying means roller applies more than a predetermined pressure to said pressure receiving member, whereupon said printing head is thereafter freed by said pressure receiving member to move to said platen for printing a label;
- a pressure controlling arm connected with said pressure receiving member and movable therewith;
- contact means supported by said frame and stationary with respect to said pressure receiving member and engageable by said pressure controlling arm after that said arm has been pivoted a predetermined distance by motion against said pressure receiving member of said pressure applying means, thereby to block further pivoting of said pressure receiving member; said resilience of said pressure receiving member thereafter enabling said pressure receiving member to resist passage thereby of said pressure applying means until said predetermined pressure is exceeded.
- 15. The label printing machine of claim 14, further comprising adjustment means for adjusting the distance between said contact means and said controlling arm for any pivot position of said pressure receiving member, thereby to adjust the pressure required to move said pressure applying means past said pressure receiving member.
- 16. The label printing machine of claim 15, wherein said controlling arm has a side facing toward said contact means; adjustment means comprises an adjustable screw protruding from said controlling arm at said side thereof facing toward said contact means; said screw being adjustable in the length it extends from that said side of said contact arm.
- 17. The label printing machine of claim 16, wherein said pressure applying means comprises a roller attached to and movable with said printing lever and said roller being positioned to be moved into engagement with said projection means of said pressure receiving member.
- 18. The label printing machine of claim 17, further comprising printing head raising means for raising said printing head away from said platen following movement of said printing head to said platen.
- 19. A label printing machine, comprising:
- a machine frame; a printing head supported by said frame; a platen supported by said frame and opposable to said printing head; said printing head and said platen being relatively movable together and apart; moving means for so moving said printing head and said platen relatively;
- an operating lever connected to said moving means for operating them; said operating lever being movable toward and away from a portion of said machine frame; said frame including a portion attached thereto toward which said operating lever is movable;
- a constant pressure mechanism, comprising:
- pressure applying means attached to one of said operating lever for moving therewith and said frame portion; elastomeric pressure receiving means attached to the other of said operating lever for moving therewith and said frame portion; said pressure receiving means being provided for being resiliently engaged by and being positioned to be engaged by said pressure applying means upon movement of said operating lever toward said frame portion; said pressure receiving means being adapted to resiliently resist relative motion of said pressure applying means past said pressure receiving means until said pressure applying means applies more than a predetermined pressure thereto and said pressure applying means and said pressure receiving means then resiliently snap past one another, whereupon said printing head and said platen are thereafter freed for relative motion by said pressure receiving means for bringing said printing head and said platen together for printing a label.
- 20. The label printing machine of claim 19, wherein said pressure receiving means comprises a pressure receiving member, which is pivotally supported on the respective one of said lever and said frame portion; biasing means for urging said pressure receiving member to a position blocking bypassage thereof by said pressure applying means.
- 21. The label printing machine of claim 20, wherein said pressure applying means comprises a roller attached to the respective one of said lever and said frame portion.
- 22. The label printing machine of claim 20, wherein said pressure applying means is attached to said frame portion and said pressure receiving means is attached to said operating lever.
- 23. The lever printing machine of claim 20, wherein said pressure applying means is attached to said operating lever and said pressure receiving means is attached to said frame portion.
- 24. The label printing machine of claim 20, further comprising a printing lever supported to be movable with respect to said machine frame; said printing head being connected to said printing lever to be movable thereby; said operating lever being integrally connected to said printing lever to always move together therewith for operating said printing lever in a print direction and in a return direction during the course of motion of said operating lever; said printing head being movable to said platen upon movement of said printing lever in said print direction, whereby the relative motion of said printing head and said platen comprises motion of said platen.
