Claims
- 1. A container having a neck finish sealed by a closure, the neck finish comprising an inner surface, an outer surface opposed to the inner surface and a free end bridging the inner surface and the outer surface of the neck finish, the closure being molded from a resilient plastics material and comprising a top portion and a skirt portion depending from the top portion, an annular sealing rib projecting downwardly from an underside of the top portion, said rib including a first portion which is contiguous with the top portion and having a substantially cylindrical inner surface, which inner surface lies radially inwardly of the skirt portion, and a second, frusto-conica portion contiguous with an end of the first portion distal to the top portion and extending radially inwardly to terminate in a circular free edge, the first portion having an internal diameter equal to or greater than the external diameter of the neck finish of the container so that during engagement of the closure with the neck finish, the second, frusto-conical portion will be engaged by said free end of the neck finish and folded back toward the substantially cylindrical inner surface of the first portion of the rib to form a seal between at least said outer surface of the neck finish of the container and the closure.
- 2. The container of claim 1, wherein the container is a carbonated beverage container.
- 3. The container of claim 1, wherein the container is formed from a plastic material.
- 4. The container of claim 1, wherein the container is formed from glass.
- 5. The container of claim 1, wherein the neck finish of the container has a screw thread adapted to engage with a complementary screw thread on the skirt portion of the closure.
- 6. A container having a neck finish sealed by a closure, the neck finish comprising an inner surface, an outer surface opposed to the inner surface and a free end bridging the inner surface and the outer surface of the neck finish, the closure being molded from a resilient plastics material and comprising a top portion and a skirt portion depending from the top portion, an annular sealing rib projecting downwardly from an underside of the top portion, said rib including a first portion which is contiguous with the top portion and having a substantially cylindrical inner surface, which inner surface lies radially inwardly of the skirt portion, and a second, frusto-conical portion contiguous with an end of the first portion distal to the top portion and extending radially inwardly to terminate in a circular free edge, the first portion having an internal diameter equal to or greater than the external diameter of the neck finish of the container so that during engagement of the closure with the neck finish, the second, frusto-conical portion will be deformed by being bent toward the top portion to form a seal between at least said outer surface of the neck finish of the container and the closure.
- 7. The container of claim 3, wherein said plastic material is polyethylene terephthalate (PET).
