Claims
- 1. A container for receiving commodities from a loading apparatus, said container attachable to a tractor for transporting the commodities, said container having a vertical side, said container comprising:
- a container floor defining a floor plane;
- a non-movable front portion extending upwardly from said floor and having a rearward end;
- two vertical side walls extending upwardly from said floor, each of said side walls having a forward end, at least one of the vertical side walls movable relative to said floor between an expanded position and a retracted position, said movable vertical side wall being substantially perpendicular to said floor plane when said movable vertical side wall is in said expanded position;
- at least one connector mechanism pivotally attached to said movable vertical side wall and pivotally attached to said rearward end of said non-movable front portion, said at least one connector mechanism including a vertical member extending upwardly from said floor, said movable vertical side wall and said vertical member together forming at least a portion of said vertical side of said container; and
- a controller for controlling the movement of said movable vertical side wall between said retracted position and said expanded position.
- 2. A container according to claim 1 further comprising at least two wheels.
- 3. A container according to claim 1 further comprising:
- a sealing flange attached to said movable vertical side wall, said sealing flange extending outwardly from said movable vertical side wall toward said other vertical side wall, said sealing flange positioned near said floor with a bottom side opposing said floor when said movable vertical side wall is in said retracted position,
- wherein said sealing flange is sized to seal a gap between said floor and said movable vertical side wall when said movable vertical side wall is in said expanded position.
- 4. A container according to claim 3 further comprising a slide member fixedly connected to said floor and slidably contacting said bottom side of said flange, said slide member configured to cooperate with a rail to seal a gap between said sealing flange and said floor.
- 5. A container according to claim 1 wherein said controller comprises at least one cylinder configured to hydraulically expand and retract said movable vertical side wall.
- 6. A container according to claim 1 wherein said non-movable front portion includes a side wall portion which forms at least a portion of said vertical side of said container.
- 7. A container according to claim 1 wherein said container floor includes a movable floor system for conveying said commodities toward said front portion.
- 8. A trailer for receiving commodities from a loading apparatus, said trailer having a vertical side, said trailer comprising:
- a front trailer portion having two vertical front side walls and a floor defining a container area each of said front side walls having a rearward end;
- at least one connector mechanism pivotally attached to a rearward end of one of said front side walls, said at least one connector mechanism including a vertical member extending upwardly from said floor;
- a rear trailer portion connected to said front trailer portion, said rear trailer portion having two vertical rear side walls and a floor defining a container area, each of said rear side walls having a forward end, at least one rear side wall movable between an expanded position and a retracted position, wherein said movable rear side wall is pivotally attached to said connector mechanism, wherein said movable rear side wall, said vertical member, and said front side wall pivotally attached to said at least one connector mechanism form at least a portion of said vertical side of said trailer; and
- a controller for controlling the movement of said movable rear side wall between said retracted position and said expanded position.
- 9. A trailer according to claim 8 further comprising:
- a sealing flange attached to said movable rear side wall, said sealing flange extending outwardly from said movable rear side wall toward said other rear side wall, said sealing flange positioned near said rear trailer floor with a bottom side opposing said floor when said movable vertical side wall is in said retracted position,
- wherein said sealing flange is sized to seal a gap between said rear trailer floor and said movable rear side wall when said movable rear side wall is in said expanded position.
- 10. A trailer according to claim 8 further comprising a slide member fixedly connected to said floor and slidably contacting said bottom side of said flange, said slide member configured to cooperate with a rail to seal a gap between said sealing flange and said floor.
- 11. A trailer according to claim 8 wherein said controller comprises at least one cylinder configured to hydraulically expand and retract said movable rear side wall.
- 12. A trailer according to claim 8, wherein said movable rear side wall and said front side wall each define a plane, wherein said movable rear side wall is positioned in substantially the same plane defined by said front side wall connected thereto when said movable rear side wall is in said retracted position.
- 13. A trailer according to claim 12 wherein said movable rear side wall is positioned in a plane substantially parallel to and spaced from the plane defined by said front side wall connected thereto when said movable rear side wall is in said expanded position.
- 14. A trailer according to claim 13 wherein said connector mechanism further includes:
- a front hinge pivotally attached to said rearward end of said one of said front side walls along substantially the entire vertical length of said rearward end;
- a rear hinge pivotally attached to said forward end of said movable rear side wall along substantially the entire vertical length of said forward end; and
- a cross member pivotally attached between said front hinge and said rear hinge.
- 15. A trailer according to claim 14,
- wherein said connector mechanism is positioned in substantially the same plane defined by said movable rear side wall connected thereto when said movable rear side wall is in said retracted position,
- wherein said connector mechanism is positioned at an angle to the plane defined by said movable rear side wall connected thereto when said movable rear side wall is in said expanded position, and
- wherein said connector mechanism is positioned at an angle to the plane defined by said front side wall connected thereto when said movable rear side wall connected thereto is in said expanded position.
- 16. A trailer according to claim 15 further comprising:
- a first sealing flange attached to said expandable rear side wall, said first sealing flange extending outwardly from said movable rear side wall toward said other rear side wall, said first sealing flange positioned near said rear trailer floor, said rear trailer floor having a top side and having a bottom side substantially parallel to said rear trailer floor, wherein said first sealing flange is sized to seal a gap between said rear trailer floor and said movable rear side wall when said movable rear side wall is in said expanded position; and
- a second sealing flange attached to said cross member, said second sealing flange extending outwardly in the same direction as said first sealing flange, said second sealing flange positioned near said rear trailer floor, said second sealing flange having a top member and having a bottom member facing said rear trailer floor, wherein said second sealing flange is sized to seal a gap between said rear trailer floor and said cross member when said movable rear side wall is in said expanded position.
- 17. A trailer according to claim 16,
- wherein said first sealing flange further includes a front side opposing a second sealing flange rear side, said first sealing flange front side spaced therefrom and defining a gap therebetween, and
- wherein said first sealing flange front side is configured to sufficiently abut said second sealing flange rear side to close said gap when said rear side wall is in said expanded position.
- 18. A trailer according to claim 17,
- wherein said first sealing flange front side is configured to sufficiently taper downward from said first sealing flange top side toward said second sealing flange rear side, to prevent trapping material between said first sealing flange front side and said second sealing flange rear side when said rear side wall is in said expanded position.
- 19. A trailer according to claim 8 wherein said floor includes a movable floor system for conveying said commodities toward said front trailer portion.
- 20. A truck for transporting commodities, said truck comprising:
- a tractor with a chassis;
- a front trailer portion removably attached to said chassis, said front trailer portion having two vertical front side walls and a floor defining a container area, said front side walls having a preset distance therebetween, each of said front side walls having a rearward end;
- a rear trailer portion with two vertical rear side walls and a floor defining a container area, each of said rear side walls having a forward end and top edges, said rear side walls each movable between a retracted position and an expanded position;
- a top covering attached to said rear trailer portion for enclosing said container area, said top covering at least partially removable to provide an opening to said container area extending between said top edges of said rear side walls when at least one of said rear side walls is in said expanded position;
- two connector mechanisms each being configured to operatively connect one rear side wall to the rearward end of one front side wall; and
- a controller for controlling the movement of said movable rear side walls between said retracted positions and said expanded positions.
- 21. A truck according to claim 20 wherein said controller comprises at least two cylinders configured to hydraulically expand and retract said movable rear side walls.
- 22. A truck according to claim 20 wherein each of said movable rear side walls is positioned in substantially the same plane defined by said front side wall connected thereto when said movable rear side wall connected thereto is in said retracted position.
- 23. A truck according to claim 22 wherein each of said movable rear side walls is positioned in a plane substantially parallel to and spaced from the plane defined by said front side wall connected thereto when said movable rear side wall connected thereto is in said expanded position.
- 24. A truck according to claim 23 wherein each of said connector mechanisms further includes:
- a front hinge pivotally attached to the rearward end of one of said front side walls along substantially the entire vertical length of the rearward end;
- a rear hinge pivotally attached to the forward end of one of said movable rear side walls along substantially the entire vertical length of the forward end; and
- a cross member pivotally attached between said front hinge and said rear hinge.
- 25. A truck according to claim 24 wherein each of said connector mechanisms is positioned in substantially the same plane defined by said movable rear side wall connected thereto when said movable rear side wall connected thereto is in said retracted position,
- wherein each of said connector mechanisms is positioned at an angle to the plane defined by said movable rear side wall attached thereto when said movable rear side wall attached thereto is in said expanded position, and
- wherein each of said connector mechanisms is positioned at an angle to the plane defined by said front side wall attached thereto when said movable rear side wall attached thereto is in said expanded position.
- 26. A truck according to claim 20 wherein each of said movable rear side walls are movable between said retracted position and said expanded position independently of said other movable rear side wall.
- 27. A truck according to claim 20 wherein said floor includes a movable floor system for conveying said commodities toward said front trailer portion.
