Claims
- 1. A container comprising:
- (a) an open topped tray formed of paperboard having a bottom, and at least front, back, and lateral side walls connected together and having a top peripheral edge defining the top opening in said tray, a front outwardly extending flange affixed to and extending outward from the front peripheral edge of said tray, an outwardly extending flange attached to and extending outward from the back edge of said tray, and a pair of outwardly extending flanges affixed to and extending from the lateral peripheral edges of said tray, wherein all of said flanges on said tray are attached thereto by cut score hinge lines;
- (b) a substantially flat cover having upper and lower sides, the lower side of said cover being adhered to the surfaces of said peripheral flanges to cover the open top of said tray, whereby upon opening, said front and lateral side flanges split with a portion adhering to said cover and a portion remaining attached to said tray, and whereby said cover can be rotated open and closed about said cut score hinge line of attachment between said back edge of said tray and said back flange.
- 2. The container of claim 1 wherein said tray is formed of paperboard and a pull opening tab is formed at one of said corners of said tray by a perforated line of weakness through said front flange intersecting a perforated line of weakness through one of said lateral side flanges leaving a pull tab portion of said flanges outward of said line of perforation which may be easily parted from the main portion of said flanges, whereby when said cover is adhered to said flanges, a user may pull upward on said pull tab portion of said flanges which will separate from the main portion of the flanges and allow said cover to be pulled upwardly thereby and opened from said tray.
- 3. A container comprising:
- (a) a paperboard tray having a bottom panel and front, back and lateral side panels attached thereto to form a tray structure open at the top thereof and having a top peripheral edge, said tray also including outwardly extending front, back and lateral side flanges attached to each of said front, back and lateral side panels at the top peripheral edges thereof by cut score hinges;
- (b) a substantially flat paperboard cover having inner and outer sides, with the inner side thereof being adhered to the peripheral flanges of said tray to cover said opening in said tray, a score line cut partially through the inner side of said cover parallel and adjacent to the front edge of said tray, a score line cut partially through the outer side of said cover at a position substantially parallel to and spaced outwardly of the cut score line in the lower side of said cover, whereby when said cover is pulled upwardly from said tray by a user, the front and lateral side paperboard flanges on said tray will split at the areas of adhesion between said cover and said flanges and the cover will hingedly open about the cut score hinge between said back flange and back panel, and wherein said cover will split between said cut score lines on the inner and outer sides thereof to form overlapping locking flaps projecting from said tray and from the open portion of said cover such that said cover can be reclosed by slipping the locking flap on said cover under the locking flap extending from the front edge of said tray.
- 4. The container of claim 3 wherein said cover and said paperboard tray are sealed on the inner sides thereof with a polyethylene sealer.
- 5. The container of claim 3 wherein said cover is adhered to said tray by a polyethylene adhesive.
- 6. The container of claim 3 including a notch formed on one of said side flanges at a position adjacent to the front edge of said tray, and wherein said cover is not adhered to said tray at an area of the flange proximate to said notch to provide an initial opening position for pulling off said cover from said tray.
- 7. A paperboard container comprising:
- (a) a tray having a bottom panel and front, back and lateral side panels attached thereto and arranged to form a tray having an open top and a top peripheral front, back and lateral side edges, and flanges attached to said front and lateral side edges of said tray by cut score hinges and extending laterally outward therefrom;
- (b) a substantially flat paperboard cover hingedly connected to said tray at the back edge thereof and having inner and outer sides, the inner side of said cover being adhered to the flanges of said tray, said cover having a first score line cut partially through the inner side of said cover at a position parallel to and spaced inwardly of the front edge of said tray and a second score line parallel to said first cut score line and spaced outwardly therefrom and cut partially through the outer side of said cover, whereby when said cover is pulled upward from said tray by a user, the lateral side flanges of said tray will split at the areas adhered to said cover and said cover will split between said double cut score lines at the front of said tray to form a locking flap projecting inwardly from said tray and an overlapping locking flap on said cover projecting outwardly from said cover which can be slipped under the locking flap on said tray to reclose said cover.
- 8. A unitary blank having an inner and outer side, for forming a paperboard container comprising:
- (a) a bottom panel having a front edge, back edge, and a pair of lateral side edges;
- (b) a pair of lateral side panels hingedly connected to said lateral side edges of said bottom panel and each having a pair of hingedly connected glue tabs extending from the sides thereof;
- (c) a front panel hingedly connected to the front edge of said bottom panel;
- (d) a back panel hingedly connected to the back edge of said bottom panel;
- (e) flanges attached to each of said lateral side panels at the top edges thereof by partial cut score lines on the inner side of the blank;
- (f) a flange connected by a cut score hinge line on the inner side of the blank to the top edge of said front panel;
- (g) a cover panel hingedly connected to the top edge of said back panel and having a laterally extending first cut score line on the inner side of the blank at a position such that when the blank is folded into a carton, said first cut score line is spaced laterally inward from the cut score hinge line between said front panel and its laterally extending flange, said cover panel having a second cut score line or the outer side of the blank which is spaced laterally outward from said first cut score line and is cut partially through said cover panel, whereby when said blank is folded to form a tray and the cover is folded down and adhered along its periphery to said flanges on said lateral side and front panels, opening of said cover panel will cause said side panel flanges to split and will cause said cover panel to split between said first and second cut score lines in said upper panel to form a first locking flap which extends inwardly from the top edge of said front panel and a second overlapping flap which extends outward from said cover panel such that said flaps may be interlocked to reclose the cover panel on the tray portion of the formed carton.
- 9. The carton blank of claim 8 wherein said blank is formed of paperboard and has a polyethylene coating on the inner side thereof.
