Claims
- 1. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material, comprising the steps of:
a. generating a plurality of ultrasonic waveforms having at least one ultrasonic waveform characteristic; b. interacting said plurality of ultrasonic waveforms having said at least one ultrasonic waveform characteristic with said petroleum residuum; c. affecting said at least one ultrasonic waveform characteristic through interaction of said plurality of ultrasonic waveforms with said petroleum residuum; d. detecting at least one affected ultrasonic waveform characteristic; e. analyzing said at least one affected ultrasonic waveform characteristic; and f. assessing immediacy of said petroleum residuum to deposition of a solid material based upon analysis of said at least one affected ultrasonic waveform characteristic.
- 2. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 1, wherein said step of generating a plurality of ultrasonic waveforms comprises generating said plurality of ultrasonic waveforms using a device selected from the group consisting of a piezoelectric transducer, an electromagnetic acoustic transducer, and a laser.
- 3. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 1, wherein said step of interacting said plurality of ultrasonic waveforms having said at least one ultrasonic waveform characteristic with said petroleum residuum comprises the step of continuously interacting said plurality of ultrasonic waveforms with said petroleum residuum.
- 4. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 1, wherein said step of interacting said plurality of ultrasonic waveforms having said at least one ultrasonic waveform characteristic with a petroleum residuum comprises the step of delivering pulses of said plurality of said ultrasonic waveforms to said petroleum residuum.
- 5. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 1, wherein said step of interacting said plurality of ultrasonic waveforms having said at least one ultrasonic waveform characteristic with said petroleum residuum comprises the step of delivering bursts of said plurality of ultrasonic waveforms to said petroleum residuum.
- 6. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 1, wherein said at least one ultrasonic waveform characteristic comprises an ultrasonic waveform velocity.
- 7. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 1, wherein said at least one ultrasonic waveform characteristic comprises an ultrasonic waveform frequency.
- 8. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 7, wherein said ultrasonic waveform frequency has a range of about 0.1 MHz to about 200 MHz.
- 9. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 7, wherein said ultrasonic waveform frequency comprises a swept frequency range.
- 10. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 9, wherein said swept frequency range has a start frequency of about 0.1 MHz and an end frequency of about 200 MHz.
- 11. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 1, wherein said at least one ultrasonic waveform characteristic comprises a ultrasonic waveform amplitude.
- 12. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 7, wherein said at least one affected ultrasonic waveform characteristic comprises a change in said ultrasonic waveform frequency.
- 13. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 11, wherein said at least one affected ultrasonic waveform characteristic comprises a change in said ultrasonic waveform amplitude.
- 14. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 13, wherein said change in said ultrasonic waveform amplitude comprises a decrease in said ultrasonic waveform amplitude per unit distance traveled through said petroleum residuum.
- 15. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 13, wherein said at least one affected ultrasonic waveform characteristic comprises a change in said ultrasonic waveform amplitude of a portion of the ultrasonic waveforms within said swept frequency range.
- 16. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 6, wherein said at least one affected ultrasonic waveform characteristic comprises a change in said ultrasonic waveform velocity.
- 17. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 1, wherein said at least one affected ultrasonic waveform characteristic comprises an attenuation of said plurality of ultrasonic waveforms.
- 18. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 1, wherein said step of detecting at least one affected ultrasonic waveform characteristic comprises:
i. receiving said at least one affected ultrasonic waveform characteristic with an ultrasonic transducer; ii. generating a signal; and iii. amplifying said signal.
- 19. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 12, wherein said step of analyzing said at least one affected ultrasonic waveform characteristic comprises determining an amount of said change in said ultrasonic waveform frequency.
- 20. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 13, wherein said step of analyzing said at least one affected ultrasonic waveform characteristic comprises determining an amount of said change in said ultrasonic waveform amplitude.
- 21. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 20, wherein said step of analyzing said at least one affected ultrasonic waveform characteristic comprises determining an amount of said decrease in said ultrasonic waveform amplitude.
- 22. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 16, wherein said step of analyzing said at least one affected ultrasonic waveform characteristic comprises determining an amount of said change in said ultrasonic waveform velocity.
- 23. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 15, wherein said step of analyzing said at least one affected ultrasonic waveform characteristic comprises determining an amount of said change in said ultrasonic waveform amplitude within said swept frequency range.
- 24. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 17, said step of analyzing said at least one affected ultrasonic waveform characteristic comprises determining an amount of said attenuation of said plurality of ultrasonic waveforms.
- 25. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 19, wherein said step of assessing immediacy of said petroleum residuum to deposition of a solid material based upon analysis of said at least one affected ultrasonic waveform characteristic comprises:
i. establishing an amount of change in said ultrasonic waveform frequency which corresponds to deposition of said solid material from said petroleum residuum; and ii. comparing the actual amount of change of said frequency of said ultrasonic waveform to said amount of change in said frequency which corresponds to said deposition of said solid material from said petroleum residuum.
- 26. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 20, wherein assessing comprises:
i. establishing an amount of change in said amplitude of said ultrasonic waveform which corresponds to said deposition of said solid material from said petroleum residuum; and ii. comparing the actual amount of change of said amplitude of said ultrasonic waveform to said amount of change in said amplitude which corresponds to said deposition of said solid material from said petroleum residuum.
- 27. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 21, wherein assessing comprises:
i. establishing an amount of decrease in said amplitude of said ultrasonic waveform which corresponds to said deposition of said solid material from said petroleum residuum; and ii. comparing the actual amount of decrease of said amplitude of said ultrasonic waveform to said amount of decrease in said amplitude which corresponds to said deposition of said solid material from said petroleum residuum.
- 28. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 23, wherein assessing comprises:
i. establishing an amount of change in said amplitude of said at least one ultrasonic waveform within said swept frequency range which corresponds to said deposition of said solid material from said petroleum residuum; and ii. comparing the actual amount of change of said amplitude of said at least one ultrasonic waveform within said swept frequency range to said amplitude of said at least one ultrasonic waveform which corresponds to said deposition of said solid material from said petroleum residuum.
- 29. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 22, wherein assessing comprises:
i. establishing an amount of change in said velocity of said ultrasonic waveform which corresponds to said deposition of said solid material from said petroleum residuum; and ii. comparing the actual amount of change in said velocity of said ultrasonic waveform to said amount of change in said velocity which corresponds to said deposition of said solid material from said petroleum residuum.
- 30. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 1, further comprising heating said petroleum residuum.
- 31. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in 30, wherein heating said petroleum residuum comprises adjusting the temperature of said petroleum residuum within the range of ambient temperature to about 650° F. (about 340° C.).
- 32. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 30, wherein heating said petroleum residuum comprises adjusting the temperature of said petroleum residuum within the range of about 480° F. (about 250° C.) to about 650° F. (about 340° C.).
- 33. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 30, wherein heating said petroleum residuum comprises adjusting the temperature of said petroleum residuum above about 650° F. (above about 340° C.).
- 34. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 30, 31, 32 or 33, wherein heating said petroleum residuum comprises processing said petroleum residuum to generate lighter distallates.
- 35. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 25, 26, 27, 28 or 29, wherein assessing comprises continuously assessing said petroleum residuum.
- 36. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 35, wherein continuously assessing said petroleum residuum comprises assessing said petroleum residuum a sufficient number of times in a duration of time to avoid deposition of said solid material during heating.
- 37. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 1, wherein deposition of said solid material comprises formation of coke.
- 38. A petroleum residuum analyzer, comprising:
a. a petroleum residuum; b. an ultrasonic waveform generator; c. an ultrasonic waveform detector; d. a plurality of ultrasonic waveforms having at least one ultrasonic waveform characteristic transmitted from said ultrasonic waveform generator to said ultrasonic waveform detector through said petroleum residuum, wherein interaction of said plurality of ultrasonic waveforms with said petroleum residuum affects said at least one ultrasonic waveform characteristic; e. an ultrasonic waveform analyzer which analyzes at least one affected ultrasonic waveform characteristic; and f. an assessment element which determines immediacy of said petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material based upon analysis of said at least one affected ultrasonic waveform characteristic.
- 39. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 38, wherein said ultrasonic waveform generator is selected from the group consisting of a piezoelectric transducer, an electromagnetic acoustic transducer, a laser, and an intensity modulated laser.
- 40. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 38, wherein said plurality of ultrasonic waveforms having said at least one ultrasonic waveform characteristic transmitted from said ultrasonic waveform generator to said ultrasonic waveform detector through said petroleum residuum comprises continuous transmission of said plurality of ultrasonic waveforms through said petroleum residuum.
- 41. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 38, wherein said plurality of ultrasonic waveforms having said at least one ultrasonic waveform characteristic transmitted from said ultrasonic waveform generator to said ultrasonic waveform detector through said petroleum residuum comprises transmission of pulses of said plurality of said ultrasonic waveforms through said petroleum residuum.
- 42. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 38, wherein said plurality of ultrasonic waveforms having said at least one ultrasonic waveform characteristic transmitted from said ultrasonic waveform generator to said ultrasonic waveform detector through said petroleum residuum comprises the transmission of bursts of said plurality of ultrasonic waveforms through said petroleum residuum.
- 43. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 38, wherein said ultrasonic waveform generator and said ultrasonic waveform detector comprise a single ultrasonic transducer.
- 44. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 38, wherein said at least one ultrasonic waveform characteristic comprises an ultrasonic waveform velocity.
- 45. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 38, wherein said at least one ultrasonic waveform characteristic comprises an ultrasonic waveform frequency.
- 46. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 45, wherein herein said ultrasonic waveform frequency has a range of about 0.1 MHz to about 200 MHz.
- 47. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 45, wherein said ultrasonic waveform frequency comprises a swept frequency range.
- 48. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 47, wherein said swept frequency range has a start frequency of about 0.1 MHz and an end frequency of about 200 MHz.
- 49. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 38, wherein said at least one ultrasonic waveform characteristic comprises a ultrasonic waveform amplitude.
- 50. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 45, wherein said at least one affected ultrasonic waveform characteristic comprises a change in said ultrasonic waveform frequency.
- 51. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 49, wherein said at least one affected ultrasonic waveform characteristic comprises a change in said ultrasonic waveform amplitude.
- 52. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 51, wherein said change in said ultrasonic waveform amplitude comprises a decrease in said ultrasonic waveform amplitude per unit distance traveled through said petroleum residuum.
- 53. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 51, wherein said at least one affected ultrasonic waveform characteristic comprises a change in said ultrasonic waveform amplitude of a portion of the ultrasonic waveforms within said swept frequency range.
- 54. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 44, wherein said at least one affected ultrasonic waveform characteristic comprises a change in said ultrasonic waveform velocity.
- 55. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 38, wherein said at least one affected ultrasonic waveform characteristic comprises an attenuation of said plurality of ultrasonic waveforms.
- 56. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 38, further comprising:
a. a signal generator responsive to said ultrasonic waveform detector; and b. a signal amplifier.
- 57. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 50, wherein said ultrasonic waveform analyzer determines an amount of said change in said ultrasonic waveform frequency.
- 58. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 51, 52 or 53, wherein said ultrasonic waveform analyzer determines an amount of said change in said ultrasonic waveform amplitude.
- 59. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 58, wherein said ultrasonic waveform analyzer determines an amount of decrease in said ultrasonic waveform amplitude.
- 60. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 54, wherein said ultrasonic waveform analyzer determines an amount of change in said ultrasonic waveform velocity.
- 61. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 59, wherein said ultrasonic waveform analyzer determines an amount of change in said ultrasonic waveform amplitude within said swept frequency range.
- 62. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 55, wherein said ultrasonic waveform analyzer determines an amount of said attenuation of said plurality of ultrasonic waveforms.
- 63. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 57, wherein said assessment element which determines immediacy of said petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material based upon analysis of said at least one affected ultrasonic waveform characteristic compares:
i. an amount of change in said ultrasonic waveform frequency which corresponds to deposition of said solid material from said petroleum residuum; and ii. an actual amount of change of said frequency of said ultrasonic waveform through said petroleum residuum.
- 64. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 58, wherein said assessment element which determines immediacy of said petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material based upon analysis of said at least one affected ultrasonic waveform characteristic compares:
i. an amount of change in said amplitude of said ultrasonic waveform which corresponds to said deposition of said solid material from said petroleum residuum; and ii. an actual amount of change of said amplitude of said ultrasonic waveform through said petroleum residuum.
- 65. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 59, wherein said assessment element which determines immediacy of said petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material based upon analysis of said at least one affected ultrasonic waveform characteristic compares:
i. an amount of decrease in said amplitude of said ultrasonic waveform which corresponds to said deposition of said solid material from said petroleum residuum; and ii. an actual amount of decrease of said amplitude of said ultrasonic waveform through said petroleum residuum.
- 66. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 61 wherein said assessment element which determines immediacy of said petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material based upon analysis of said at least one affected ultrasonic waveform characteristic compares:
i. an amount of change in said amplitude of said at least one ultrasonic waveform within said swept frequency range which corresponds to said deposition of said solid material from said petroleum residuum; and ii. an actual amount of change of said amplitude of said at least one ultrasonic waveform within said swept frequency range through said petroleum residuum.
- 67. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 60, wherein said assessment element which determines immediacy of said petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material based upon analysis of said at least one affected ultrasonic waveform characteristic compares:
i. an amount of change in said velocity of said ultrasonic waveform which corresponds to said deposition of said solid material from said petroleum residuum; and ii. an actual amount of change in said velocity of said ultrasonic waveform through said petroleum residuum.
- 68. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 38, further comprising a regulated heat source which adjusts temperature of said petroleum residuum.
- 69. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 68, wherein said regulated heat source adjusts the temperature of said petroleum residuum within the range of ambient temperature to about 650° F. (about 340° C.).
- 70. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 68, wherein said regulated heat source adjusts the temperature of said petroleum residuum within the range of about 480° F. (about 250° C.) to about 650° F. (about 340° C.).
- 71. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 68, wherein said regulated heat source adjusts the temperature of said petroleum residuum above about 650° F. (above about 340° C.).
- 72. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 68, wherein said regulated heat source adjusts the temperature of said petroleum residuum to generate lighter distillates.
- 73. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 63 or 67, wherein said assessment element continuously determines immediacy of said petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material.
- 74. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 63 or 67, wherein said assessment element determines immediacy of said petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material a sufficient number of times in a duration of time to avoid deposition of said solid material as said regulated heat source adjusts temperature of said petroleum residuum.
- 75. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 38, wherein deposition of said solid material comprises formation of coke.
- 76. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material, comprising:
a. thermally treating an amount of said petroleum residuum having at least one heat capacity characteristic; b. altering said at least one heat capacity characteristic of said amount of said petroleum residuum; c. analyzing an altered heat capacity characteristic of said amount of petroleum residuum; and d. assessing immediacy of said petroleum residuum to deposition of solid materials based upon analysis of said altered heat capacity characteristic.
- 77. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 76, wherein said step of altering said at least one heat capacity characteristic of said amount of said petroleum residuum comprises altering the amount of heat (J/Kg) required to raise the temperature of said amount of petroleum residuum.
- 78. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 76, wherein said step of analyzing said altered heat capacity characteristic of said amount of petroleum residuum comprises determining at least one heat capacity value of said petroleum residuum.
- 79. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 76, wherein said at least one heat capacity value of said petroleum residuum is determined at 100° C. at constant pressure.
- 80. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 76, wherein said step of assessing immediacy of said petroleum residuum to deposition of solid materials based upon analysis of said altered heat capacity characteristic comprises:
i. establishing a standard heat capacity value which corresponds to said deposition of said solid material from said petroleum residuum; and ii. comparing said at least one heat capacity value of said petroleum residuum to said standard heat capacity value which corresponds to said deposition of said solid material from said petroleum residuum.
- 81. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 76, further comprising the step of avoiding deposition of said solid material during thermal treatment of said petroleum residuum.
- 82. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 76, wherein said step of thermally treating an amount of said petroleum residuum having at least one heat capacity characteristic comprises adjusting the temperature of said petroleum residuum within the range of ambient temperature to about 650° F. (about 340° C.).
- 83. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 76, wherein said step of thermally treating an amount of said petroleum residuum having at least one heat capacity characteristic comprises adjusting the temperature of said petroleum residuum within the range of about 480° F. (about 250° C.) to about 650° F. (about 340° C.).
- 84. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 76, wherein said step of thermally treating an amount of said petroleum residuum having at least one heat capacity characteristic comprises adjusting the temperature of said petroleum residuum above about 650° F. (above about 340° C.).
- 85. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 76, wherein said step of thermally treating an amount of said petroleum residuum having at least one heat capacity characteristic comprises processing said petroleum residuum to generate lighter distillates.
- 86. A method of assessing immediacy of a petroleum residuum to deposition of solid material as described in claim 76, wherein said solid material comprises coke.
- 87. A petroleum residuum analyzer, comprising:
a. an amount of petroleum residuum; b. a regulated heat source which adjusts temperature of said amount of petroleum residuum; c. a petroleum residuum sampler which interacts with said petroleum residuum; d. a heat capacity analyzer responsive to said petroleum residuum sampler which establishes an actual heat capacity value of said at least one petroleum residuum sample; and e. an assessment element responsive to said heat capacity analyzer which compares said actual heat capacity value of said at least one petroleum residuum sample to a standard heat capacity value which corresponds to said deposition of said solid material from said petroleum residuum.
- 88. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 87, wherein said petroleum residuum sampler which interacts with said petroleum residuum comprises an on-line petroleum residuum sampler.
- 89. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 87, wherein said a heat capacity analyzer responsive to said petroleum residuum sampler which establishes said actual heat capacity value of said at least one petroleum residuum sample comprises a differential scanning calorimeter.
- 90. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 87, wherein said assessment element responsive to said heat capacity analyzer which compares said actual heat capacity value of said at least one petroleum residuum sample to a standard heat capacity value which corresponds to said deposition of said solid material from said petroleum residuum further comprises an analysis duration compensation element.
- 91. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 87, further comprising a signal generator responsive to said assessment element, wherein said regulated heat source adjusts temperature of said petroleum residuum in response to a signal from said signal generator to avoid deposition of said solid material from said petroleum residuum.
- 92. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 87, wherein said thermal treatment of said petroleum residuum comprises a heat source regulated to adjust temperature of said petroleum residuum within the range of ambient temperature to about 650° F. (about 340° C.).
- 93. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 87, wherein said thermal treatment of said petroleum residuum comprises a heat source regulated to adjust temperature of said petroleum residuum within the range of about 480° F. (about 250° C.) to about 650° F. (about 340° C.).
- 94. A petroleum residuum analyzer as described in claim 87, wherein said thermal treatment of said petroleum residuum comprises a heat source regulated to adjust temperature of said petroleum residuum above about 650° F. (above about 340° C.).
