Claims
- 1. A process for separating the ice crystals contained in a slurry of an aqueous solution and ice crystals from said aqueous solution comprising the steps of:
- continuously introducing said slurry into a first annular space of an apparatus;
- continuously withdrawing part of said solution through perforations in the surface of tilted vanes attached to a shaft coaxial with said first annular space of said apparatus to produce a packed bed of ice crystals having a homogeneous porosity throughout its cross section;
- rotating said vanes to cause said packed bed to move continuously through a second annular space, said second space containing a stagnant layer of said aqueous solution in a first section and a substantially stagnant layer of wash liquid in a second section contiguous to said first section, thus creating a static washfront lying in a straight plane perpendicular to translatory movement of said packed bed of ice crystals; and
- continuously disintegrating said continuously advancing packed bed and feeding out the product of that disintegration.
- 2. Process according to claim 1 whereby said disintegration is accomplished by scraping said packed bed with a rotating disc provided with slots and knives.
- 3. Apparatus for separating the ice crystals contained in a slurry of an aqueous solution and ice crystals, from said solution and washing said ice crystals with an aqueous wash liquid, comprising in operative cooperation:
- (a) enclosure means defining a first annular space;
- (b) means for feeding in said slurry in said first space;
- (c) enclosure means defining a second annular space;
- (d) a plurality of tilted, hollow vanes attached to a rotatable shaft coaxial with said spaces, for causing transfer of said thickened slurry from said first space into said second space through one end thereof and transfer of said thickened slurry continuously through said second space and out the other end of said second space, the vanes each having an inner space and a perforated surface and the inner space being connected to a duct in said rotatable shaft to enable withdrawal of solution from said slurry while retaining said ice crystals, producing a thickened slurry and further feed out solution from said slurry;
- (e) means for maintaining a stagnant layer of said aqueous solution in said second space at its feed out side;
- (f) means for causing said thickened slurry to homogenize throughout its cross section before reaching the washfront, producing a homogeneously packed bed of ice crystals; and
- (g) at the feed out end of said second space, means for continuously disintegrating said packed bed of ice crystals and feed out the product of disintegration.
- 4. Apparatus according to claim 3, whereby said means for continuously disintegrating said packed bed of ice crystals include scraping means comprising a rotatable disc provided with slots and knives.
