Claims
- 1. A support structure for supporting continuous prebaked anodes in an aluminium smelting cell, comprising a pair of rigid side plates and a pair of rigid end plates rigidly connected to define an enclosed supporting structure, at least one pair of spaced rigid electrically conductive cross plates configured to provide wedging surfaces against which side surfaces of a continuous prebaked anode are held by clamping means supported by one of said side plates, means for introducing electrical current into said cross plates and elevating and lowering means carried by said supporting structure to facilitate proper positioning of the anode and feeding of the anodes with respect to the supporting structure.
- 2. A support structure as claimed in claim 1 wherein said supporting structure supports multiple anodes and the cross plates supporting adjacent anodes are spaced to define a heat exchange path therebetween.
- 3. A support structure as claimed in claim 2 wherein said heat exchange path is defined by opposed surfaces of the cross plates supporting adjacent anodes and said heat exchange path includes one or more baffles to direct a flow of a heat transfer medium over substantially all of said surface of the cross plates supporting adjacent anodes.
- 4. A support structure as claimed in claim 1 wherein said means for introducing electrical current into said cross plates includes at least one current carrying member mounted in electrical contact with at least one of said cross plate.
- 5. A support structure as claimed in claim 4 wherein said current carrying member comprises a bar of high electrical conductivity mounted near and generally parallel to a lower end of said cross plate, said current carrying member further comprising a vertical riser portion extending part way up said cross plate, said vertical riser portion being placed in electrical contact with the current supply to the cell.
- 6. A support structure as claimed in claim 5 wherein said bar is formed from copper.
- 7. A support structure as claimed in claim 4 comprising at least one current carrying member mounted in electrical contact with each of said cross plates.
- 8. A support structure as claimed in claim 1 wherein said means for introducing electrical current into said cross plates introduces electrical current in a generally vertical direction with respect to the smelting cell to minimise magnetic disturbance of the cell.
- 9. A support structure as claimed in claim 8 wherein said means for introducing electrical current into said cross plates comprises a current supply means placed in electrical contact with a top portion of said cross plates.
- 10. A support structure as claimed in claim 1 wherein said wedging surfaces are provided by one or more wedging members positioned between an anode and at least one associated cross plate.
- 11. A support structure as claimed in claim 1 wherein said cross plates are riffled to form a multiplicity of inwardly sloping plate elements joined to provide a series of connected wedging surfaces.
- 12. A support structure as claimed in claim 11 wherein the anode includes surfaces corresponding to the series of connected wedging surfaces of said cross plates.
- 13. A support structure as claimed in claim 1 wherein said cross plates are coated with an electrically conductive material which is wettable by and resistant to molten aluminium.
- 14. A support structure as claimed in claim 13 wherein said material is a metal.
- 15. A support structure as claimed in claim 14 wherein said metal is selected from molybdenum, copper or chromium.
- 16. A support structure as claimed in claim 13 wherein said material is a refractory hard metal boride or carbide.
- 17. A support structure as claimed in claim 16 wherein said material is selected from TiB.sub.2, ZrB.sub.2 or TiC.
- 18. A support structure as claimed in claim 13 wherein said material is applied to said cross plates by a plasma, arc or gas spraying technique.
- 19. A support structure as claimed in claim 13 wherein said material is applied to said cross plates by electrodeposition.
- 20. A support structure as claimed in claim 1 wherein said anodes are coated with aluminium.
- 21. A support structure as claimed in claim 1 wherein a layer of aluminium powder or aluminium cement is placed between said anodes and their respective supporting cross plates.
- 22. A support structure as claimed in claim 1 wherein spaces exist between said anodes and said side plates and said spaces are packed with alumina or other refractory material to substantially prevent anode burning.
- 23. A support structure as claimed in claim 1 wherein said clamping means comprises a threaded jack mechanism mounted on a side plate.
- 24. A support structure as claimed in claim 1 wherein said elevating and lowering means comprises supporting legs located near each corner of the support structure, each leg housing a jacking mechanism.
