Claims
- 1. A process for the production of an adducted EPM or EPDM oil solution comprising reacting (a) an antioxidant polyamine composition in the presence of (b) an aliphatic or phenolic alcohol ethoxylate with (c) a grafted polymer of (1) ethylene, (2) at least one olefinic hydrocarbon having from 3-16 carbon atoms, and (3) optionally a polyene monomer containing 5-10 carbon atoms, said polymer having been grafted with a graft monomer in the form of an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid, acid ester or anhydride dispersed in an oil solution and reacting the resulting mixture for a time and temperature sufficient to form an imide adduct.
- 2. The process of claim 1, wherein the olefinic hydrocarbon is propylene.
- 3. The process of claim 1, wherein the grafting monomer has the structure ##STR6## in which R is an alkylene group having 0-4 carbon atoms; Y is hydrogen or a branched or straight chain alkyl group, a halogen group such as chlorine, bromine or iodine, or a heterocyclic or other organic group having 1-12 carbon atoms; and X is a hydroxy, alkoxy or aryloxy group, but at least one X group is hydroxy.
- 4. The process of claim 3, wherein the grafting monomer is maleic anhydride.
- 5. The process of claim 4, wherein the amount of maleic anhydride employed is between 0.5 and 1.5 weight percent in the grafted polymer.
- 6. The process of claim 1, wherein the amount of grafting monomer employed is between 0.5 and 1.5 weight percent in the grafted polymer.
- 7. The process of claim 1, wherein the antioxidant polyamine composition includes at least a first amine group separated from a second amine group by at least three or more carbon atoms.
- 8. The process of claim 7, wherein the antioxidant polyamine composition is NPPDA.
- 9. The process of claim 7, wherein the amount of polyamine employed is between 0.6 and 1.2 amine-containing molecules per grafted monomer.
- 10. The process of claim 1, wherein the amount of polyamine employed is between 0.6 and 1.2 amine-containing molecules per grafted monomer.
- 11. The process of claim 1, wherein the mixture is held at a temperature between 120.degree. F. and 350.degree. F.
- 12. The process of claim 1, wherein the mixture is held at a temperature between 300.degree. F. and 350.degree. F.
- 13. A process for the production of an adducted EPM or EPDM oil solution comprising the steps of:
- contacting a solution of a grafted polymer prepared by interpolymerizing ethylene with at least one olefinic hydrocarbon containing 3-16 carbon atoms and optionally a polyene or cyclic polyene containing 5-10 carbon atoms which has been grafted with a graft monomer in the form of an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid, acid ester or anhydride dispersed in an aliphatic hydrocarbon solvent with an oil to exchange the aliphatic hydrocarbon solvent with the oil to form an oil solution of the grafted polymer;
- reacting the oil solution of the grafted polymer with an antioxidant polyamine in the presence of an aliphatic or phenolic alcohol ethoxylate to form an imide adduct.
- 14. The process of claim 13, wherein the grafting monomer is maleic anhydride.
- 15. The process of claim 14, wherein the amount of maleic anhydride employed is between 0.5 and 1.5 weight percent in the grafted polymer.
- 16. The process of claim 13, wherein the amount of grafting monomer employed is between 0.5 and 1.5 weight percent in the grafted polymer.
- 17. The process of claim 13, wherein the antioxidant polyamine composition is NPPDA.
- 18. The process of claim 13, wherein the amount of polyamine employed is between 0.6 and 1.2 amine-containing molecules per grafted monomer.
- 19. The process of claim 13, wherein the amount of NPPDA employed is between 0.6 and 1.2 amine-containing molecules per grafted monomer.
- 20. The process of claim 13, wherein the mixture is held at a temperature between 300.degree. F. and 350.degree. F.
- 21. The process of claim 13 wherein the grafted polymer is an EPM polymer.
- 22. The process of claim 13 wherein the ethoxylate has the structure: ##STR7## wherein x is a number from 1-10 and R is selected from the group consisting of an aliphatic group having from 7-20 carbon atoms and an aryl group or substituted derivative thereof, the substitution being an alkyl group containing 3-20 carbon atoms.
- 23. A continuous process for the production of an adducted EPM or EPDM oil solution comprising continuously reacting (a) a grafted polymer prepared by interpolymerizing ethylene with at least one olefinic hydrocarbon containing 3-16 carbon atoms and optionally a polyene or cyclic polyene containing 5-10 carbon atoms which has been grafted with a graft monomer in the form of an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid, acid ester or anhydride, said grafted polymer being dispersed in an oil solution, with (b) an antioxidant polyamine composition in the presence of (c) an aliphatic or phenolic alcohol ethoxylate to form an imide adduct.
- 24. The process of claim 23, wherein the antioxidant polyamine composition is NPPDA.
- 25. The process of claim 23, wherein the amount of polyamine employed is between 0.6 and 1.2 amine-containing molecules per grafted monomer.
- 26. The process of claim 23, wherein the mixture is held at a temperature between 300.degree. F. and 350.degree. F.
- 27. The process of claim 23 wherein the grafted monomer is maleic anhydride.
- 28. The process of claim 23 in which the grafted polymer is an EPM polymer in which the olefinic hydrocarbon is propylene.
- 29. The process of claim 23 wherein the ethoxylate has the structure: ##STR8## wherein x is a number from 1-10 and R is selected from the group consisting of an aliphatic group having from 7-20 carbon atoms and an aryl group or substituted derivative thereof, the substitution being an alkyl group containing 3-20 carbon atoms.
- 30. A process for the production of an adducted EPM oil solution comprising reacting (a) an antioxidant polyamine composition in the presence of (b) an aliphatic or phenolic alcohol ethoxylate having the structure: ##STR9## wherein x is a number from 1-10 and R is selected from the group consisting of an aliphatic group having from 7-20 carbon atoms and an aryl group or substituted derivative thereof, the substitution being an alkyl group containing 3-20 carbon atoms with (c) a grafted polymer of (1) ethylene and (2) at least one olefinic hydrocarbon having from 3-16 carbon atoms, said polymer having been grafted with a graft monomer in the form of an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid, acid ester or anhydride dispersed in an oil solution and reacting the resulting mixture for a time and temperature sufficient to form an imide adduct.
- 31. A continuous process for the production of adducted EPM and EPDM oil solution comprising the continuous sequence of:
- interpolymerizing in an inert organic solvent ethylene, at least one olefinic hydrocarbon having 3-16 carbon atoms and, optionally, a polyene containing 5-10 carbon atoms to produce a polymer;
- grafting said polymer with a grafting monomer selected from the group consisting of an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid, acid-ester and anhydride to produce a grafted polymer;
- preparing an oil solution of the grafted polymer;
- contacting the oil solution of the grafted polymer with an antioxidant polyamine composition and an aliphatic or phenolic alcohol ethoxylate to react the grafted polymer and form an imide adduct.
- 32. The process of claim 31 which includes the step of exchanging the inert organic solvent by an oil to form the oil solution of the grafted polymer.
- 33. The process of claim 31 wherein the polymer produced is an EPM polymer and the olefinic hydrocarbon is propylene.
- 34. The process of claim 31 wherein the inert organic solvent is an aliphatic hydrocarbon solvent.
- 35. The process of claim 31 wherein the grafting monomer is maleic anhydride.
- 36. The process of claim 31 wherein the grafting monomer is present in an amount between 0.5 and 1.5 weight percent of the grafted polymer.
- 37. The process of claim 31 wherein the antioxidant polyamine composition is NPPDA.
