Claims
- 1. A highly pure, high molecular weight aromatic polycarbonate consisting essentially of predetermined, statistical mixtures of unreacted diphenol, monohalodiphenol and dihalodiphenol, said polycarbonate having an intrinsic viscosity of about 0.4-1.0 dl/g as measured in methylene chloride at 25.degree. C., said polycarbonate being represented by the general formula: ##STR10## wherein Xm and Xn can each be a halogen and mixtures thereof; m and n are each 0-2 with the proviso that m+n equal at least 0.1, but no more than about 2.0; and, W is a member selected from the following group:
- (a) --CH.sub.2 --.sub.r wherein r is 0-10 with the proviso that when both Xm and Xn are chlorine and m and n are each 1, r is 0 or 2-10;
- (b) ##STR11## wherein R is a member of the group consisting of C.sub.1 -C.sub.10 alkyl and C.sub.6 -C.sub.14 aryl;
- (c) ##STR12## wherein R and R' can each independently be the same as R in (b) above. (d) ##STR13## wherein p and q can each independently be 0-1; and (e) --O--.
- 2. The polycarbonate of claim 1 wherein W is (b).
- 3. The polycarbonate of claim 1 wherein W is (c).
- 4. The polycarbonate of claim 1 wherein Xm and Xn are each bromine and m+n equal 2.0.
- 5. The polycarbonate of claim 1 wherein Xm and Xn are each chlorine and m+n equal 2.0.
- 6. The polycarbonate of claim 1 wherein Xm is chlorine and Xn is bromine.
- 7. The polycarbonate of claim 1 wherein Xm is bromine and Xn is chlorine.
