Claims
- 1. A method of packaging a fluid product including the steps of:
- (a) continuously forming a plurality of spaced apart cavities in a first web of thermoplastic film material from a supply of said material, each of the cavities having a sealing edge along the periphery thereof;
- (b) causing the formed web to travel in a path downwardly inclined from the horizontal;
- (c) directing a second flat web of thermoplastic material to progressively cover and sealingly engage the edges of the cavities in the first web to form a package having a predetermined interior volume; and
- (d) simultaneously with step (c), progressively filling the cavities in the first web with the desired volume of fluid product no greater than the predetermined volume of the package while simultaneously sealing said second web to the edges of said cavities.
- 2. Apparatus for forming packages of fluid product between facing surfaces of two webs of packaging material including:
- a rotary forming drum for forming a plurality of spaced apart cavities in a first continuous web of packaging material, said drum capable of directing the cavities formed in said first web to a position approaching a generally vertical position, each of the cavities having a sealing edge along the periphery thereof;
- means for directing a second continuous web of covering material to progressively cover the cavities in said first web;
- sealing means for progressively sealing said second web to the sealing edges of the cavities formed in said first web to form a package having a predetermined interior volume, said sealing means adapted to initially seal said second web to the lower sealing edges of the cavities and to progressively continue the sealing operation to the upper sealing edges of the cavities; and
- means located between the upper edges of said cavities and said second web for progressively introducing a metered amount of the fluid product to be packaged into the cavities while said sealing means simultaneously continues to seal said second web to the edges of said cavity, said metered amount being a quantity no greater than the predetermined volume of the package.
- 3. The invention defined in claim 2 including heating means adjacent said forming drum for heating said first web of packaging material.
- 4. The invention defined in claim 3 wherein said forming drum is provided with a plurality of forming cavities on the outer peripheral surface thereof.
- 5. The invention defined in claim 4 including a source of vacuum coupled to each of said cavities on said forming drum.
- 6. The invention defined in claim 5 including means cooperating with said source of vacuum for intermittently applying vacuum to the cavities of said forming drum.
- 7. The invention defined in claim 6 wherein said means for progressively introducing the product to be packaged includes nozzle means.
- 8. The invention defined in claim 7 wherein said nozzle means is coupled to a reservoir for intermittently metering a discrete volume of product to be packaged.
- 9. The invention defined in claim 8 said metering means is synchronized with the movement of said forming drum.
